Lately I've been curious about the appeal of candles (I've been thinking of how symbolic/archetypal flame and its products--including candlelit dinners, btw--are and how it tends to show up in social situations in various ways) and wondered how many like to use candles in love making?Going by movies and tv shows it seems it's almost normal. Even if it's all spontaneous and they hunger for the sex right away the next scene (which is presumably less than 10 minutes later) will have like 60 candles lit all around the room even if there weren't candles there before waiting to be lit. I don't know anyone who uses a lot of candles (save maybe for very special--and rare--occasions) though I did hear of one who had one candle lit on her headboard that proved quite distracting as they accidentally knocked it onto the bed. I could see how candlelight could show just enough to excite without the light being too harsh on the flaws and I suppose the colors & scents could help put one in an altered state. I'm just curious, anyone know how and why (and how often) this gets practiced? Just to be clear, I'm NOT talking about lighting candles just so hot candle wax is in easy reach to drip on a lover. I think candlelight (when not overdone) can seem cozy and romantic. Because it's a soft light. It makes the situation seem more intimate. Candlelit dinner seems sweet to me.I haven't used candles in a sexual context. But I love scented candles so.. I could see why it might be more enjoyable to have sex *with* scented candles around. Regular candles... I don't see the appeal of. If I had too many of these around, it would just remind me of Church.. and paedophile priests and so on, and it would ruin the moment. IP: Logged |

I'm withholding intimacy to preserve my life force. Coitus is an activity that is best left to the simians. IP: Logged |

Me thinks cryopreservation would be a safer bet, Sheldon. IP: Logged |

Love candles - vanilla ones. Also Glade's Honey and Chocolate one.One day, I'll be serenaded in a room filled with my favourite candles. Until that day, I'll just sit with my cats lol (I don't even have or like cats, but you get the point) lol IP: Logged |

This thread reminded me of why I'm asexual. The title alone made me gag and almost puke in my mouth upon reading. ikja IP: Logged |

^ There's a difference between "indifference" and "aversion". Most asexual people I have spoken to were indifferent to sexual (and occasionally romantic) things/situations. They did not have an aversion or repulsion towards these things. That includes me ^ (being demisexual). Asexuality is purely lack of sexual attraction and absence of interest in sexual activity. Also, some asexuals are not *also* aromantic btw. http://www.asexuality.org/wiki/index.php?title=Aromantic And you said - it reminded you of "why" you are asexual. But you don't need a reason to be asexual. Because asexuality is not a "life choice". You're either born asexual. Or not. *shrug* Did you mean celibate? IP: Logged |

I think the combination of flattering, soft and warm light on one's features, the smell of scented candles and the allure of fire (= passion, etc) obviously makes candles a great atmosphere-builder in the bedroom.I'd be worried about things catching fire though. NOT so romantic. You can't beat a nice candlelit dinner at a restaurant for setting the mood though. I like a couple of candles around the room in such situations, I wouldn't go overboard though because it would seem somewhat contrived. IP: Logged |
