Topic: Which systems? - Options for chart program

I am presently running an older version of “Solar Fire”. All the different settings for different systems is bewildering! What are the best to use? (or the pros + cons of either?) I think I gathered Linda used equal houses, (5 choices on where to set 1st cusp) Then there’s options for Geocentric Lats, Lunar Parallax, Lunar Node Type, Vulcan Calc., + Part of fortune. Which Zodiac do I use, (i.e. Tropical), and do I want my coordinates Geocentric or Heliocentric? Arrgh! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am so eager to cast charts of my nearests + dearests for study! Also, anyone who has experience with this program any tips would be most welcome as the documentation is inadequate, and it gets fussy + crashes over “illegal actions/commands” when I don’t know what I did. (maybe it doesn’t like XP?)

Sounds like you'll have to take it slow and go only as deep into it as your brain can possibly absorb. Know your basics WELL and build from there.------------------ ... it's better to light a candle than curse the darkness IP: Logged |

Greetings...Linda did use the Equal House System for all her calculations. She used the TROPICAL Zodiac. She did not take Lunar Paralax into account. To the best of my knowledge she used the Mean Lunar nodes. I worked with her for a time in the late 80's, early 90's and I tyhink that those would be the settings she applied, if she had used a computer for her calculations, which she did not. Hope that helps... A ------------------ "The ALL is MIND; the Universe is Mental." *** The Kybalion IP: Logged |

I guess what I was really trying to ask is what is the difference between a true node and a mean node? why would you choose one over the other? Why so many different house systems and why do people choose one over another? What are the differences between the different zodiacs? (tropical seems to be the main one?) Does it really make that much difference or am I just splitting hairs here? Can someone's chart come out radically different by choosing one over the other? Certainly don't want to cast charts for other people and have them be way off base! Again, bear with me, I'll get there!!! ~Thanks all~ IP: Logged |

WOW!!! Aselzion that's so cool, did you see the time of our postings? We were trully thinking on a wavelength......thanks so much for your reply! very helpful! So where should I set the first house cusp? here's the choices: quote: Equal - Equal system with the 1st house cusp set to the Ascendant. First described by Ptolemy in his book Tetrabiblos.Aries - Equal system with 1st house cusp set to 0° Aries Solar Sign - Equal system with 1st house cusp set to 0° of the Sun’s sign “Planet” on 1st - Equal systems with 1st house cusp set to that planet’s longitude Vertex on 7th - Equal system with 1st house cusp set opposite to the Vertex MC on 10th - Equal system with 10th house cusp set to the Midheaven’s longitude Whole Signs - Equal system with 1st house cusp set to 0° of the Ascendant’s sign
these are the last 2, I swear! (I really do want to know what all this stuff means!!) Angle progressions: Solar arc or Naibod in long. or R.A. Primary direction rate: Ptolemy, Naibod, or natal solar rate Glad to hear that about the nodes! I was using 'true' (kinda like flipping a coin at the time, which word would you choose? ironic, huh?) ~thanks for the reply~ ------------------ "Too much sanity may be madness, and the maddest of all is to see the world as it is, and not as it should be" Don Quixote

Greetings Delerious...Equal Houses - Ascendant on cusp of 1st is the setting you want. In terms of setting the Progressions, I think you probably want Angles Progressed by Solar Arc. That would be Linda's preference Primary Direction rate: never mind this. It's so SLOW as to be meaningless except in terms of Psychological shifts, which will turn up as easily in Transits and Secondary Progressions. Moon's node: TRUE NODE = actual calculated position of the Lunar Nodes. MEAN NODE = a fixed rate of motion ascribed to the nodes equivalent to about 3 minutes of motion daily and usually retrograde. It's the way that they figured the nodes before the dawn of computer accuracy. Don't be so bogged down in the nitty gritty yet... Though Astrology is truly an Art/Science, I believe that the ART aspect is more meaningful than the Science, if you will take my meaning. The Science aspect gives us planetary position, but the ART allows us to actually make USE of all those pesky details. Some of the best Astrologers around wern't always the most PRECISE in their mathematics. Hope that helps a bit... A

So cool, I feel so much better now I know how to run this beast of a program. And you really cleared that up for me - probably all I'll ever have to know about that stuff for a while! (if it was good enough for Linda, I guess it'll have to be good enough for me!!!Thanks so much Aselzion for cluing me in! Now I can get on with what I'm here for - studying mine + my loved one's charts! Looking at some of yours should be interesting too, what a great way to learn!!! It should always be this much fun!
