Hi!

I just went to astro, and found the Harmonic Horoscope Charts, link.

What are these used for?
How do they help?
What are your experiences with them?

Thanks!

This came up not too long ago. Very difficult to grasp, and very much left up to subjective interpretation. Good luck!

I did a search here before i posted, and found nothing.
Would you happen to have a link?

I was just curious as to what they pertained to since the only wording on them were Harmonic Horoscope.

Thanks AJ.

Hey GingerB

Since your post, I became fascinated with 'Harmonic Astrology', and so I've spent a couple of hours reading and experimenting with it, and have a good grasp of it now. I'll give you a quick rundown on what to expect with Harmonic Astrology, but first I should thank you for giving me the opportunity to study this - its been fascinating! And something I will continue to study.

A Harmonic Chart could be likened to a musical instrument. If you imagine a harp, and every string on the harp vibrates at a different tone/frequency, then you have an array of musical variety at your fingertips. Now imagine another harp was placed next to your harp, so you have two harps sitting side by side with each other now. If you pluck a string on your first harp, then the corresponding string on your 2nd harp will begin vibrating too - because they are both resonating at the same frequency/tone.

So Harmonics is the study of 'musical' astrology. It will find out how different planets work, depending in which string you pluck on your harp. And it will show you which planets sing the same musical notes For example, in your natal chart, you may have Saturn and Mercury in opposition to each other. But in the 2nd harmonic chart, these two opposing planets would now be in conjunction - because the 2nd harmonic is the music of oppositions and polarities, so any planets who are polarized in your natal chart will be conjunct/or close together in your 2nd harmonic.

So each harmonic (whether it be the 1st harmonic up to the 16th harmonic, or even more) has its own inherent qualities associated with it. And the planets in your natal chart are re-organised to fit in with the music that particular harmonic is playing. It helps establish which planets are actually working on similar levels to each other, yet seem insignificant at natal chart level.

The different harmonics can be explained by using the 1-12 house descriptions in Astrology. But a note:- Harmonic astrology does NOT use house systems, they are no longer needed. Because each harmonic is just like a house – its a unique vibration that gives you a picture of your whole chart dancing to it.
The first harmonic could be associated with the first house, the 2nd harmonic with the 2nd house, the third harmonic with the 3rd house and so on..
Alternatively or simultaneously, you could also delve into the numerological meanings of each harmonic. For example, the number 9 is a very spiritual number to many, and the great Mayans used it as their 'main' number in the calendric calculations, it held a certain significance. And the numbers 7 and 13 are also very special in numerology, because each of these numbers represents a whole and the parts of that whole working together in unison. It can symbolise perpetual cycles, the infinite process of growth and consciousness in the universe and ourselves.

I am not very knowledgeable at numerology, so I'm hoping Mr IQHunk will be able to pass on some additional details if you have further questions about numbers in relation to harmonics.

The calculation of a Harmonic chart is quite simple, although it would take a long time to do by hand As you noticed, astro.com offer you computerised charts, you can change the harmonic number by changing the number in todays date box. So it will be on 27 at the moment, if you asked astro.com to draw you a harmonic chart, it would show you the 27th harmonic. Just change that date to whatever number you like.

To calculate a particular harmonic for a planet you first have to assign each degree of the zodiac a number. So 0 degree Aries is 0 degrees.. and each progressive degree is 1, 2, 3 etc. So, lets say Jupiter was at 15 degrees Gemini, then we know this is 75 degrees into the cycle (its 75 degrees away from 0 degrees Aries). Now, we want to find out the 4th harmonic of Jupiter - we multiply 75 by 4 = 300. Then we assign Jupiter its new position in the 4th harmonic which would be 300 degrees in from 0 degrees Aries - This would 0 degrees Aquarius. All planets are given their new positions according to each harmonic, and new relationships are formed, helping to see how the planets communicate and interact within a particular universal vibration.
Okay once more then, lets say we wanted to find out the 5th harmonic for Jupiter at 15 degrees Gemini. Remember, the 5th harmonic can correlate to the number 5 in numerology (not sure what that means) and it can correlate to the 5th house in astrology - creativity, romance, children, fun etc.
We multiply jupiters position by 5 this time. 75 (number of degrees Jupiter is into the cycle starting from 0 degrees Aries) X 5 - 75 x 5 = 375. Ahh now theres a problem!! Many of the calculations you will do (if you are doing it by hand, but unlikely lol) will result in a number larger than 360 - so we cant fit it into the astrological circle. When this happens, you simply deduct 360 from your number (deducting a full cycle allows the number to retain its harmonic) and we are left with 15. (375 - 360 = 15) Then we assign Jupiter to its new 5th harmonic position, which will be 15 degrees Aries.

You can experiment with many different harmonics, each has its own specialisation.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask

In fact, here are some examples of how a harmonic chart can be useful:-

"The Fourth Harmonic: The 4th harmonic shows how we deal with stress, strain, and struggle. When you construct a 4th harmonic chart, all of the conjunction, square, and opposition aspects in the original horoscope appear as conjunctions and this makes them easier to see. Of course, these aspects are pretty easy to see in the original horoscope as well, so what's the point? The point is that the minor aspects, the semi-square (45 degrees) and sequa-square (135 degrees), which are difficult to spot by a quick visual inspection, now appear as oppositions, and can be seen at a glance. Not only that, but other minor stress aspects (22 ½ degrees, 67 ½ degrees, 157 ½ degrees), which can take a very long time to locate, now become squares. In the 4th harmonic, whole patterns of stress aspects can be spotted, and this gives you a big edge for interpretation.

The horoscope of Francisco Assis, the Brazilian serial killer who killed at least nine women, doesn't seem, at first, to be excessively violent. But when you look at Francisco's 4th Harmonic Chart, you see another story. The Sun is opposite Venus, which can give feelings of being unloved. Yes, but lots of people have that and they don't become serial killers. What they don't have is Uranus making square aspects in the 4th harmonic to both the Sun and Venus. Uranus can make one prone to sudden, hysterical outbursts. Still, everyone born that day had the same thing. What else is there here to drive him over the edge? The Ascendant also makes stress aspects. It opposes Uranus and squares both the Sun and Venus. This makes a Grand Cross, a rare and highly stressful pattern. The Ascendant is very sensitive to changes in the time of birth. In the 4th harmonic chart, this Grand Cross could only have formed in a time interval of about 20 minutes!

But there's more to come. Mercury (the mind) Mars (violence) and Saturn (depression) make a T-Cross formation (another stressful configuration) in the 4th harmonic as well. Once again though, everyone born that day had the same thing. Why is this case different? Take another look at the birth chart. There is a close semi-square between Mars and the cusp (beginning) of the 8th house (death). Not only that, but Mars rules the sign of Aries, which happens to be the sign on the cusp of the 12th house (psychological problems) as well. This is the classic 8th house-12th house connection frequently found in the charts of serial killers. Where does the 8th house cusp land in the 4th harmonic chart? Opposite Mars, with square aspects to both Mercury and Saturn. It forms another Grand Cross. And this too, could only have been formed in an interval of about 20 minutes. It could take hours to see this in a birth chart. In the 4th harmonic chart, the conclusion leaps out at you.

What happens though, if you have harmonious aspects (sextiles and trines) in a 4th harmonic chart? The best example of that comes from Hamblin's "Harmonic Charts." It is the horoscope of a little known French Marshal from World War I, Franchet d'Esperey. Hamblin claims that sextiles and trines in a 4th harmonic chart show "effort towards pleasure, or pleasure in effort." In other words, someone who likes stress, strain, and struggle. Hamblin quotes Gauquelin's description of him:

"...he drove cars at maniacal speed and shot windows when there was nothing better to shoot."

In d'Esperey's 4th Harmonic Chart, there is a Grand Trine between the Sun, Mars, and Pluto, a perfect aspect pattern for a soldier. A Moon/Venus conjunction sextiles the Sun and Pluto and opposes Mars, making for a Kite formation. Here is someone who had an emotional need (the Moon) for action and violence (Moon/Mars) and got a lot of pleasure from it (Moon/Venus).

Muhammad Ali's 4th Harmonic Chart also has a lot of harmonious aspects, especially to the Mid-Heaven. The Sun makes a sextile and the Moon a conjunction, and both aspects are within one degree of being exact. This means that stress, strain, and struggle are more likely to bring him before the public. The Mid-Heaven also has a trine from Jupiter and a sextile from Uranus. In Ali's Birth Chart, Jupiter rules the 5th house (sports and games) and Uranus rules his 7th house (open enemies), a perfect setup for someone to become famous through competitive sports.

Robert Blake, the actor arrested for his wife's murder, has a 4th Harmonic Chart with a highly stressful T-Cross formation. There is a conjunction of the Moon (feelings, emotions) and Neptune (imagination, film), which helped him in his film career, but it is opposite Pluto (extremes) and all three of these planets make a square to Jupiter (expansion and over optimism). There is hostility towards women here, and when his emotions go, they can really go (Moon, Jupiter, Pluto T-Cross), especially if he happens to be under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants (Neptune)."

"The Fifth Harmonic: The 5th harmonic chart indicates talent, if any. In the 5th harmonic chart, all of the quintiles and bi-quintiles come together as conjunctions, making them very easy to spot. The semi-quintiles and sesqua-quintiles become oppositions. Quintiles are one fifth of a circle (72 degrees) and they give talent and power, and show our ability to put things together (pattern recognition). It also has to do with creative play, the joy of making up games of finding patterns (like looking for "patterns" of cracks in the ceiling, or always stepping on cracks in the sidewalk, or always avoiding the cracks). People with strong 5th harmonics do things like that all the time. Of course, taken to the extreme, this is a mental disorder, but those with a strong 5th harmonic usually manage to keep it under control, and then it becomes the basis for creative talent. You don't need a strong 5th harmonic to succeed as an artist, designer, scientist, or engineer, but it really helps.

Let's start with a negative example, a very negative example: Adolph Hitler's 5th Harmonic. Mercury, planet of communications, is opposite the Moon, Neptune, Saturn, and Jupiter. This gives a talent for communicating and power to his words. Chiron makes a conjunction to Mercury, as well as oppositions to the Moon, Neptune, and Saturn. Remember that Chiron is a "bridge" between the inner planets (which rule "normal," everyday functions) and the outer planets, which rule forces that are out of the ordinary. Chiron also has to do with a feeling of being wounded. Hitler was able to deal with his psychological problems (Mercury rules the 12th house in his birth chart) by communications. Now everyone born that day had similar configurations in their charts. Why was Hitler different? Well for one thing, the Moon was part of the configuration, and the Moon was in place for only a few hours. But his Mid-Heaven closely aspects his Moon, Neptune, and Chiron, and also his Sun providing a link between that powerful communication configuration and his personality. The Mid-Heaven is, of course, the career and the public image, showing that Hitler's whole personality was involved when he communicated in public. The fact that the German public also felt "wounded" after the defeat in World War I tied right in with Hitler's Mercury/Chiron quintile. Unfortunately, he dealt with these wounds by making more wounds.

A more positive example of a strong 5th harmonic chart is Mozart. In his birth chart, Venus (art) is powerful because it is his only planet in a Cadent House. This means that it is a singleton by house, and can draw all of the horoscope's energy to the 6th house (work). But the only apparent aspect seems to be a trine to Mars, and while this does add activity, it seems to leave poor Venus without connection to the rest of his life. Let's take a look at his 5th Harmonic Chart. Venus now has conjunctions with Pluto (extremes, obsession, intensity) and the Moon (which rules both one's own emotions and the ability to appeal to the public). In fact, there are eight conjunctions in his 5th harmonic, and each one represents a quintile or a bi-quintile in his birth chart. Talent on top of talent. The Sun and Mercury in that 5th harmonic chart make trines to the Mid-Heaven, making it easier for that talent to come before the public. Most of Mozart's first drafts were the same as his final drafts. He would hear the music in his head and write it down with few, if any revisions."

The harmonic chart is not something to be used INSTEAD of normal natal astrology - but something to be used in CONJUNCTION with it. It helps identify tendencies in the natal chart very quickly and very clearly. I really impressed by it!

Wow, Betelgeuse!
I'm impressed!

You just sucked that up like a sponge, it seems.

Love the idea of musical rhythm.

Would it be safe to say, that in a sense, the harmonic charts would be like bio~rhythms?

That's kinda what it reminds me of, from your explaination,

I thank you!

Hey GingerB

I guess you could compare biorythyms to harmonics - they both work on principles of differing frequencies, and both of them analyse how these different vibrations work with us - so yes it can be correlated!

A harmonic chart is a like a very sharp focus on something... lets say you wanted to find out the creative potential you had, then you would draw up a 5th harmonic chart, and its whole purpose is aligned to creative potential, so it can be easy to spot talents and tendencies between planets. Each harmonic is a different dimension of energy, and we can then tap into that dimension to see how it works. Or relating it to music again - each string plays a certain melody, each melody is unique. Some planets sing to the same melody when certain strings are plucked, whilst others sing a different tune - but when we pluck a string we can see how all of the planets are singing to each other, depending on the song that is being played.

So, let me ask you this...

To find our true harmonic horoscope, we would go have a chart done, for the day we were born?

Or, would it need to be charted daily?

Well, you could have a daily chart done if you wanted - this would produce a chart showing 'the vibrations of the now'.

There are also charts showing 'The Harmonics of the Age'. These would be drawn up for your exact age, and give you a persoanl harmonic. So for example, lets say it was Mr. Beans birthday today and he is 35 years old - you would look at the 35th harmonic of his natal chart.

Then there are the 'First 12 Harmonics'.
These are like the astrological houses, and if an astrologer wanted to find an individuals attitude to marriage and relationships, they could calculate the 7th Harmonic chart. And this would offer a detailed account of the indiviuals energies at the 7th vibratory level - the level of relationships.

Each of the first 12 harmonicsw relates to the principles of the 12 astrological houses.

It works in the following way:-
Looking at the 7th Harmonic again.. in the 7th Harmonic chart, all septiles, biseptiles and tri septiles appear as conjunctions. A septile is one-seventh of a circle. So all planets that are singing the 7th septile song are grouped together - forming close conjunctions - and all other plantes that are singing a slightly different song form aspects to these conjunctions, likes squares, trines, oppositions.

Therefore we get to see the relationships between planets singing the 7th song of partnership and the planets who add flavour to that song with their own melodies.

I'll show you visually what I mean:-

The natal chart in its natural form is the First Harmonic. Like this:-

And then you can calculate other harmonics. Like this:-

Now I'm going to ask myself a question:- Why the buggar do I find relationships such a challenge??!! Why have I had so few of them and prefer to stay alone, and why do I feel like intimacy makes me uncomfortable sometimes? If we look at my first harmonic chart - my natural astrological natal chart - then the first indication of this might be seen if we look at my Moon (in the 7th house) in opposition to Pluto. This aspect creates a tension for me, a great pull of my emotions, resulting in a ferocity of emotional experiences when Im in a relationship. But if we want to study even closer, I could draw up a 7th harmonic chart.. and then my challenges look cleaer! I have a grand square between Neptune, Pluto, Jupiter and my Moon. Suddenly, there are now FOUR planets singing to each other, and the natal Pluto-Moon opposition is given more depth. Jupiter is added to the fray, challenging Moon and Pluto. My Jupiter is conjunct my MC and Sun, so I could use this energy in two ways. I could either huff and puff and moan and groan about the sorrows and strain of relationships - and then avoid them! Or.. I could see the Jupiter element as something fated (conj MC) - I'm being challenged to grow from relationships, its part of my destiny, and the only reason it feels so tough is because adversity doesnt just grind us down, it sharpens our focus, stregthens our resolve.

You can apply this harmonic focus to zoom in on any aspect of the chart.

Above in an earlier post, I quoted an alaysis of Mozarts chart. So the question this time is:- Why was Mozart such a creatively gifted Genius? What indications are there that show this immense ability?

In his normal natal chart, Mozart has a powerful Venus because it is in a cadent house - which makes it a singleton. This means that all Venus has a free and full reign with the charts energy. But the only other noticeable aspect to Venus is a trine to Mars - so there isnt a great deal to look at and say; "So thats why hes a genius!!"
But if we draw a 5th harmonic chart for Mozart - 5th harmonic will show his creative potential and abiltiies - then its a more complex and vivid story. Venus forms conjunctions with Pluto and the Moon in the 5th harmonic, in total there are 8 conjunctions in the chart!!! And his Sun and Mercury trines his MC, a sign that his talents will be recognised to the public. His 5th harmonic chart just oozes talent in bucket loads.

Each harmonic can add another dimension to the way we look at our charts. Eeveryone on this forum has an excellent knowledge of houses in astrology, and if you have this knowledge then you also have an excellent knowledge of harmonics - because they carry the same message.

Betelgeuse, Absolutely Incredible! Thank You I wonder if you could, please, give an idea of what the 13th Harmonic would cover? My Thanks, to you, for All of the information you have already provided, as well as, in advance to my question.

Thank you AJ, I'll do that.

I have a feeling that Betelgeuse, may have been a better teacher for this subject, now that I've seen what Betelgeuse, can explain this way.

geminstone, if I find any good links, I'll bring back in here for you.

Betelgeuse, I think you've explained this in the best way for other's to try to understand it better.

I'm still not totally caught up on it, still trying to absorb it, but all my reactions to your wording this has been, "Ooh! Ok..."

Thank you.

Thanks Geministone and GingerB

Although, I should really be thanking you!! I didnt even know harmonic astrology existed until Gingers thread! Geministone, I would have replied and taken interest in your original thread if I had seen it - sorry, sometimes the threads in the forum move so quickly and if I don't check back for a couple of days, they end up on page 2 - which I rarely check.

This whole subject has bee really helpful to me because harmonic astrology works under similar priciples to wave dynamics in quantum physics, and this is an area I've been working on with my I Ching work for a long time now. I was so pleased to find I could link astrology more closely to the I Ching - because thats what I am trying to do in my personal work - unify different systems/ancient knowledge so they speak a universal language.

Geministone, the 13th harmonic is quite a hotly disputed one!! The first 12 harmonics are generally agreed upon amongst astrologers, however, I found a few different interpretations of the 13th harmonic in my search.
The most common realm of thought is that the 13th Harmonic is related to ones view of existance. Its a very spiritual harmonic, showing spiritual aspirations, rebirth and transformation. It has been widely compared to the sign of Scorpio.
In numerology, there is also dispute over the meaning of the number 13. The pythagorans have a different interpretation than the chaldean method. I'm going to investigate further and see if I can solidify its meaning a little more, but as far as I can tell, many agree that it is a spiritual harmonic linked with scorpionic energies of transformation.

Geministone, does the 13th harmonic feel significant for you?

Ginger, if you have any questions, no matter how silly they might sound, feel welcome to ask them I know its a lot of information to absorb, but if anything isnt clear, I will strive to find better ways to explain them - theres always a better way

I'm not very confident in my ability to offer solid astrological interpretations, but most people on the forum are very accomplished - so I could help you with the practical side of drawing up personal harmonics in your charts, although I may let you down if I were to then offer insight into their substance. But Im willing to try! So if you would like any harmonics in your personal charts calculated and explained, I'd be happy to.

Betelgeuse, no apologies necessary! I am that same way and, I do understand how quickly strings can get pushed back... I'm just excited to see that it has made a comeback
As far as the number 13, yes, it is curiously significant for me. I am drawn to the 'family tree' dynamic with regard to astrology and, I was actually playing with the natal charts of my own family, when the Harmonics chart selections, in astro's menu, caught my attention.... it happened to also be February 13th... Anyway, I found that even the smallest details seemed so profound and 13 was the thread through all of them. I found it very interesting that 13 corrosponds with Scorpio... the chart that we use for our ' family ' energy happens to be that of a Scorpio Sun. Pluto is very prominant throughout the charts of all members and, this extends to the synastry as well as to other areas... The one that I am left wanting to fully understand, is Uranus. Uranus is incredibly interesting within us but, still eludes me... The numbers 5, 9, 11, 12, 22 and 33 are significant as well...
Anyway, this is great and, it has me very excited! I give my Thanks, to you both I will be exploring this more... and with better understanding.

Well Betelgeuse, aren't you a little darlin.

How would we go about this?
Just give my birth info?

2/23/60
Sometime after nightfall...

I'm not sure of my birth time.
I ordered a full length birth certificate, and it didn't have a time of birth on it, so I can only guess no one knows what time I slipped into this existance...

I've always known I was from a different galaxy, I just forgot where the heck the time/planet portal/doorway is...

When I'm gone from this one, it'll take em years to figure out I'm no longer on this plane. LOL!

I've done a few charts, using different birth times, and it seems that the time's I've used are not that much different than the other's...

Finally, i've been using 6:29pm for my other charts. {but not sure}

Thanks so very much!

Had to check out this topic! I skimmed a lot of what was said, is the Cliff Notes version: go to astro.com and create your own natal chart and then go the Harmonics link and get a chart with today's date to see how you are vibrating with the Universe today, and put in a different number than today's date if you want to check a different Harmonic Vibration, like the 5 for Creative??????
I'll read the thread in more detail after I get my own charts to analyse

Ok, so I'm looking at my 5th Harmonic, because I'm a creative person. Ooooh, grand Cardinal cross/square in my 5th harmonic! What is that about?

My Venus is conjunct my Moon there in Virgo, the sign of work right?

In the 7th harmonic, does my Venus opposing my Sun say that partnership opposes my ego?

Hey GingerB

I think the best way for you to study the harmonics of your chart, is to ask yourself which area you want to look at first. Each harmonic will show you a different facet of you, just like AG had enquired as to his 5th harmonic, because hes a creative musician. So what are your interests in your own natal chart? Id there any area which you feel you need clarification? Is it partnerships/love you are curious about? (7th harmonic, and could also look at 9th harmonic) Or maybe work/career (10th harmonic and maybe 2nd harmonic). Then we have something to focus on

Yes thats it Mystic Meolody. Or you could also calculate the 9 harmonic charts (theres an option for that in astro.com too). But to calculate a single harmonic only, just change the number in todays date box.

Hey AG, thats a very strong 5th harmonic you have there. The grand square is the first thing that jumps out at you, but it is just as geministone observed, you have a mystic rectangle - and its connected to the grand square!

A mystic rectangle is a balancing configuration. It is formed when two pairs of oppositions that are sextile to each other. Because there is a mix between the harder opposition aspect and the softer sextile aspect, the mystic recatnagle is a very dynamic pattern, it seeks to bring harmony from chaos. It embues the individual with a strong sense of balanmce and stucture. The balance can be hard to attain initially, but once it has been reached, maintaining comes more naturally. It unites polarised energies in a harmonious way, and once the aspect is integrated into the personality, it can bring great strength and talent, enabling the individual to deal with tension in a more balanced and flowing way. In this case - the creative balance of the 5th harmonic.

But the REALLY interesting thing is.. your mystic rectangle is connected to your Grand Square! The points of connection are your Sun/Uranus conjunction and its opposite Mars. I think these are the important points of both the grand square and mystic rectangle, they act like conduits, linking the one with the other. The benefit of this communication between both configurations is that the mystic rectangles qualities enhance and affect the grand square. So the grand square is now familair with the language spoken by the mystic rectangle - the language of harmonizing and balancing.

Which is why I think you should view the two configurations as one pattern, rather than two distinct patterns - the grand square will not behave typically anymore, its become a composition with the mystic rectangle.

What does a Cardinal Grand Square typify if you don't mind? Oh, I'll look it up.

The Cardinal Grand Square is very motivated and driven. This makes for a true leader who could have a tendency to run people over. http://www.mooncatsastrology.com/webpages/configurations.htm

Hmmmm...I am driven creatively. I've been playing music for 20 years based off of just two years of piano lessons. I'm completely self-taught on guitar and bass. Right now I'm in the process of joining a band, but whether or not it will work out will depend on the ego of the guitarist who set up the band, and how much I unconsciously push the direction into areas I want to go. It seems to always be the case that the best musicians of the group are looked to for making musical decisions. Right now that Aquarian guitarist is used to making all of those decisions, but if I join them I’m certain they’ll start asking my opinion, which may rub the guitarist the wrong way. I’ve already criticized a chord progression of his in our first meeting. Their music is at www.openspaceband.com . Their current music doesn’t inspire me, but it’s hard for me to walk away from competent musicians. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Aqua has offered to do side projects with me as well, so that’s a possibility for an alternate fit.

Got off on a bit of a tangent there, but creativity has really been my drive forever. Prior to picking up music I was a good artist able to copy pictures in a different scale than the original. I’ve also considered studying interior design, and recently looked into selling my photography.
