Which one of those two aspects - semisquare or semisextile - do you think is easier to handle in synastry???

For instance, which one of the following two aspects would be the easier one?

Sun in Capricorn semisquare Sun in Scorpio

OR

Sun in Capricorn semisextile Sun in Sagittarius

Would things change, if the Capricorn Sun was on the Sagittarius/Capricorn cusp and the Sagittarius Sun on the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp?

I know that generally speaking Capricorn and Scorpio are more compatible than Capricorn and Sagittarius. But from what I've learned a semisquare is basically a weaker version of a square which isn't exactly an easy aspect. A semisextile on the other hand is supposed to be a weaker version of the sextile which would be a favorable aspect.

Those minor aspects get me all confused ... I'd be grateful for any help I can get with this!!!

Hi SagSun,

[quote]A semisextile on the other hand is supposed to be a weaker version of the sextile which would be a favorable aspect.(/quote]

I disagree with this. It may have gotten its name from the sextile, but its meaning is a different one.

Just compare:

The sextile connects different modes (like fix and cardinal) with each other and also different elements, but those elements are harmonious with each other.

Example:
Sagittarius: moveable Fire
Libra: cardinal Air

Fire and Air are both masculine, active, extraverted elements and get along well despite some differences (that`s the reason I see the sextile as a "friendship"-aspect, because it shows where you can learn from each other, support each other and like each other without being the "same").

The semisextile on the other hand has much in common with the quinkunx

Quinkunx: connects different modes and different elements, which are yin and yang, and operating from different perspectives

Semisextile: connects also different modes and different elements, which are yin and yang

Example:

Quinkunx:
Sagittarius: moveable Fire
Taurus: fixed Earth

Semisextile:
Sagittarius: moveable Fire
Capricorn: cardinal Earth

And the elements of Fire and Earth are quite different from each other. So I suppose the semisextile is not a weak form of the sextile, but a little bit more complicated to integrate.

I have Venus in Capricorn semisextile Mars in Sagittarius natally, and it certainly doesn`t feel "sextile-like", because Earth and Fire are so different; the need for security fighting against my urge to dream the impossible dream (Mars is conjunct Neptune and ASC fromt he 12th house).

Ive thought about this quite a bit. I agree with darkdreamer that the semi-sextile relates more to the quincunx than the sextile. I think its more like a minor quincunx. Where the quincunx has a virgoan agitation and need for analysis, humility and perfection of forces that dont easily gel - the semi-sextile has more of a piscean flavor and requires less analysis and more openness to the unexpected, unorthodox possibilities of the signs working next door to each other working with each other. I do believe it flows more easily once the internal "openness" is achieved. It is probably felt more spiritually or internally than the quincunx which is a more major aspect and is probably more externalized - once the work is done.
They are both pretty variable in their effects and depend on other factors in the chart and in transits - what planets are aspecting. The quincunx can be very positive once some work is done.
The quincunx is 5/12 of the circle. 0 degree Virgo is the first quincunx point from 0 degree Aries. So the virgoan/analysis/perfecting/working/balancing aspects of the quincunx fits well.
The semi-sextile is 1/12 of the circle and the piscean feeling/intuition/harmonizing all/seeing unity in disparate parts fits well with the feel of the semi-sextile.
Both aspects relate to the virgo/pisces axis. Both are somewhat hidden and slower to be realized and worked with than other aspects, IMO.

Jeff Green sees the lower number aspects (30, 40, 45, 51, 60, 72) as occuring more internally. They are seen as more minor bec their effects are not obvious. He says they often lay the groundwork for the more major aspects (in terms of transits) which are more externalized in their problems and solutions (80, 90, 102, 120, 135, 144, 150, 154, 160, 180). My groupings here are somewhat arbitrary though they represent more or less the single unit increments of the circle - 1/12, 1/9, 1/8, 1/7 etc. The second group are bi and tri aspects.

Thank you both for helping me understand the general concept of the semisextile.

I'm still confused about the semisquare though. It is an unfavorable aspect after all ...
