I was wondering what orbs to use for aspects like conjunction, opposition, square, trine and sextile? also how significant are other minor aspects(like quintile/quincux etc) with respect to asteroids?IQ or anyone kindly enlighten! IP: Logged |

There is probably more difference about orbs among astrologers than any other topic. There are those that limit a conjunction to the sun to 6 deg orb and those that consider a 7.5 deg square to a node or house angle to be significant. I fit more with the former camp than the latter.Experience will tell you alot and you will make your own decisions. What I have found is aspects to the sun are by far the most significant. A conjunction from someone elses moon for instance could go up to 10 deg and be "felt" while a conjunction of say juno to venus would not be much in play beyond 3 deg. A conjunction to the sun *in transit* from saturn or neptune could be felt 3-4 and maybe even 5 degrees out while applying. Less while seperating. A planet like mars experiencing the same transit conjunction from neptune would probably not feel anything until it was within 2 degrees. Of course, natal aspects and transits are very different as far as orbs. The standards you find around the internet of 8-10 deg orbs for most major aspects apply only to the sun in my experience. Other planets would get 2-4 degrees less for conjunctions, depending on relative importance in a chart and angularity (placed in an angle house or near an angle). Sensitivity to dif energies will also be a major factor with orbs from one person to the next.

I agree with Bucketriderbut I would also use the same orbs for the Sun for the Moon,Ascendant, and Midheaven too. The angles are very important points, and so is the Moon. I would think many female astrologers would protest about overlooking the importance of the Moon and emphasizing the Sun so much. Even in Vedic Astrology, Moon has more importance the Sun and that's why they look at transits from the Moon. IP: Logged |

Glaucus - I agree the moon is about as important as the sun but it is not as central as the sun, IMO. However, as with all the planets, if there are many aspects to the moon and none to the sun - the orb for the moon may increase. Ultimately though, the planets go around the sun, it is the center of our solar system. The moon goes around the earth and is obviously not as central, though closer to us and maybe some people feel that more. It makes sense to me to increase its orb value more than the other planets but not as much as the sun which is intimately connected to all other planets. Also, I have yet to see any aspect other than the conjunction have any real effect on the ASC or MC and even then it pales comparison to transits to the sun. Transits to angles tend to be event oriented and less internal. Transits to the sun are both but far more transformative. Aside from my experience on the ground with the angles, I think astrology loses all coherence as a system when the MC and ASC are seen as alternate suns and moons which respond to every trine, square and other angle. They are important house cusps but do not function differently than other house cusps which only respond to conjunctions in transit. It is the nature of a house to "house" - to react or be effected by what is in it - not what is outside of it as in transiting squares, trines and sextiles. IP: Logged | |
