Planet Aspects
The Lights: The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us
something about how things were when we were born. Each planet points to special qualities
within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights,"
the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and
the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. They have much to tell us as to
where we have been and where we are headed.
The Sun: Your Self and Future
From the Sun comes light, that which draws us into life. The Sun represents all the changes
we have not yet taken, that part of us that we have not yet experienced but are headed toward.
The Sun represents our identity, or self, in that it is toward these that we are moving and
developing. Thus, it also represents that which we will become: older people, authorities --
those we look toward, or up to. Our essence, or future. Teachers, gurus, and older (more

general. It governs not only ideas, but communications, too. Communications -- by phone,
letter, spoken, or however -- are ruled by Mercury. Also thoughts, connections, phone wires,
and everything that connects and conveys -- even conversations.

meaning of something, life or whatever, it is Mars that urges us on, keeps us searching. Mars
also drives us against things, too and sends us into war and combat. The urgency of Mars, the
search for meaning, is identical to the need for union, yoga, and marriage. Mars is the planet of
union, and marriage is the most common form of yoga. When we have questions about the
opposite sex, we are looking at the planet Mars.

opportunity for other questions. Saturn rules the laws and limitations of this material world we

felt, the walls that make homes possible. Saturn holds us together as much as apart. Saturn is

Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of
getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us.
The planet that has to do with how we get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us
is Uranus. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and
understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions

Introduction
Grant Lewi (1902 - 1951) is a legendary figure among twentieth century astrologers. He was a
writer and editor for the two largest astrological magazines of the time. His two books, Heaven
Knows What and Astrology for the Millions , were the first astrological books to become best
sellers and even today, over fifty years later, they remain among the best introductions to the
subject of astrology.
The astrological interpretations found in Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions
were unique, fresh, and simple. Llewellyn George, the prominent astrologer of the time, remarked
that Lewi's interpretations must be intuitive because they were unlike any that had been written
before him. Today these interpretations remain energetic and forceful and, though some references
are now dated, Lewi's text still provides some of the clearest insights found anywhere in the
literature of astrology.
Lewi was determined to make astrology more accessible to the average person, but while
popularizing the subject he never watered it down or reduced it to the level found in "sun sign"
astrology. Writing before computers were available, he made his books function as the computer,
providing the reader with tables to generate their own charts or horoscopes and then linking his
interpretations to the information found there. Lewi would have made good use of the computer, so
much in his books seem to anticipate them. In his writing he tried to emulate the interpretation
process by using a computerless version of artificial intelligence: the meaning of a planet in a sign
doesn't stand alone but is modified by the other aspects found in your chart. Many of his comments
depend on a combination of factors and for this reason you will sometimes find that he has
something different to say about an aspect in your chart than he does for the same aspect in your
friend's chart.
This report calculates your chart for you and then collects all of Lewi's comments strictly
according to the astrological factors found there. The text contained here is valid even for those
who don't know their time of birth - Lewi focused on those factors that are in effect throughout the
birthday. The only exception to this is the case of the Moon which can move between 12 and 14
degrees in a day, so if the positions were calculated for noon then the Moon could be as much as 6
or 7 degrees different and possibly even change signs. If you don't know your time and the texts
that involve the Moon seem unlikely, you may wish to compare reports done for the beginning and
the end of the day.
At all times, Lewi’s aim has been to show how astrology can be used as an aid in living a more
satisfying and fulfilling life. Astrology offers indications and pointers - and sometimes insights - to
situations that you find in life. It doesn’t tell you what to do about them, but if it offers you a better
understanding of the situation, then you are in a better position to decide for yourself what to do. To
quote Grant Lewi:
"It is not limitations that eats out the heart, but inaction, the knowledge of powers not used, the
sense of having failed to develop to the utmost. The overcoming of fate is not the overcoming of

limitations: that is impossible. It is the exercise of free will, the assertion of the full self, expanding
to its utmost with the tools at hand, in the circumstances that are set. Astrology, through the
interpretation of the horoscope, assists men to the achievement of their maximum by indicating to
them the lines along which their will may be most progressively applied, the goals to be sought,
and the individual means by which each one may arrive at the outermost boundaries of his world."
Horoscope of Birth
Your horoscope of birth is the blueprint of your personality and character as indicated by the
position of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets on the date of your birth. This section is
devoted to each of these members of the solar system.
The planets are the antennae and arms of the horoscope, of which the body and soul are the Sun
and Moon. No planet will ever cause you to act counter to the testimony of the Sun and Moon in
their combined influence on you. Remember this when you proceed with the following readings.
All planetary vibration must be considered in light of the basic solar-lunar readings, for these are
your character, your basic nature, which the planets will help or hinder but cannot materially
change.
According to the sign position of your Sun, one planet will be more important than the others
and should probably be read first. Your Sun is in Taurus and your dominant planet is Venus. Not
only the action of this ruling planet will be very important in your life, but also the attribute over
which it rules. Thus Gemini, ruled by Mercury, lives a great deal in the senses; Libra, ruled by
Venus, responds most readily to emotional stimuli; and so on. Study your ruler carefully.
Remember in all planetary readings that they work within the pattern of your solar-lunar nature;
never against it. The synthesis of your horoscope from the following series of paragraphs to a
working unit depends on your keeping this in mind, which will enable you to weld all the readings
into a unified and significant whole.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Scorpio
You have a strong, impulsive, passionate nature. You know what you want and, for good or
bad, get it. You are self-willed, headstrong, independent, usually getting under way early in life and
contriving to resist or break any chains which anyone tries to throw around you. You are capable of
rearing up on your hind legs, kicking over the traces, taking the bit in your teeth, and running away
at a moment's notice - or without any notice at all.
Needless to add, you are not an easy person to deal with and anyone who marries you has his
(her) work cut out. You'll keep your spouse locked up (or would if you could) at the same time that
you're ranging the land in search of more worlds to conquer - which you generally succeed in
finding and subjugating. You think with one part of your brain and feel with another and therefore
reason doesn't have any effect on your emotions of love, jealousy, or hatred - any one of which is
capable of swamping you so that you aren't good for anything else.

Intensely dramatic, you can be successful as an actor or a speaker, for your charm is
instantaneous. But unless you watch out, all your dramatic ability will be used up strutting the stage
of whatever little world you move in. You're not critical of your audiences, and get quite as much
satisfaction out of a ham audience as out of a metropolitan first night. This doesn't mean that you're
by any means a ham actor for you're not - you have the gift, if you'll only develop ambition to the
point of using it properly. But, though eager for personal acclaim, you're not ambitious in the
climbing sense and you have continuously to overcome tension which tries to drive you back to
simply getting away from it all and relaxing utterly.
A curious twist causes tension to turn into inertia instead of into action.
Your drive will be terrific and success assured. Emotional turmoil takes up too much time and
energy. Exceptionally fine mentality, scientific and inspirational as well.
Sun
The Sun indicates the appearance you will present before the world and the psychological bias
which will dominate your actions. What you seem, and why, are told in the reading for your Sun. In
many ways the Sun is the dominant force in your horoscope and in your life. Other influences,
especially that of the Moon, may modify the Sun's influence, but nothing will cause you to depart
very far from the basic solar pattern. For this reason a whole literature and a whole business have
grown up around Sun-sign astrology; and many people exist who think there is nothing more to the
horoscope than knowing what "sign you were born in" and what the Sun in that sign means. This is
a mistake, as you will discover when you have read the influence of the other bodies. But
throughout your reading, keep in mind always the basic influence of the Sun, and remember that all
other influences must be interpreted in terms of it, especially in so far as other influences play a
visible role in your life. You may think, dream, imagine, hope to be a thousand things, according to
your Moon and your other planets, but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of
your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help
from planetary vibrations.

The singleness of purpose of the Taurean, his loyalty, his stick-to-it-iveness,
spring from one source: his need for security. Self-preservation, the first law animating all assure in
some degree, is the hub of the Taurean wheel of life; and the Taurean curls and dies within himself

when security - emotional or material - is denied him. Not likely to be grasping, sure to be the
embodiment of the idealist form of love, Taurus may himself, or herself, be quite unaware of inner
motives, for self-analysis rarely important to this sign. Instincts are powerful and generally right -
always right in so far as they serve the perhaps unarticulated motives of the Taurean, who, while
not selfish in the ordinary material sense, sees to it that nothing interferes with the gratifying of his
instinctual urge, self-preservation and its more abstracted form, self-fulfillment. The Taurean will
not interfere with you if you don't interfere with him in these essentials, but will fight like a bear at
bay for his rights to these things. He is the easiest person to live with, if you are willing to live with
him and not against him. Anyone who is going to get along with a Taurean must understand that to
him or her cooperation doesn't mean doing things together; it means doing things peacefully, in a
friendly manner, even if the things are done separately. This kind of cooperation annoys people
who are less self-sufficient until they learn that the heart of the Taurean comes home to roost only
if you don't try to coerce it, and will break itself against bars of any kind, even if the bars are put up
by love itself. The Taurean is so sure of his need for security that he resents any implication that he
needs watching or holding; his instinct is to hold himself to what he needs and wants - and he can't
by any force in the world be held to anything else. On the other hand, once he has polarized his
instinct on an essential, he will cling to it with hands, teeth and toenails, and no one can tell him
that it is unworthy, or wrong, or useless, or low. Once it is his, in that it satisfies his deepest needs,
it is his forever, whether it be home, a man, a woman, ambition, love, money or anything. When the
Taurean has determined in his deep and sometimes dark subconscious that his emotional or
material security lies there, he goes there and stays there forever.
Following are the aspects to your Sun. In a general way, the trines and sextiles to your Sun
make ease, contentment, happiness, luck; while squares and oppositions give you energy, drive,
success, ambition. Conjunctions bring both energy and luck, and are translatable in terms of
whether the Sun receives squares or trines, along with the conjunction. Similarly, squares and trines
to the Sun together bring success through work and perseverance, and luck develops in proportion
to the work done and the effort extended.
Sun Conjunct Venus Orb: 07°55'
You are popular, a favorite with the other sex, with a robust magnetism and fire to your
personality that comes from high good spirits, and a sort of all-pervading optimism and good
fellowship. In a woman's horoscope this will give you more than your share of admirers, and they
will have good financial and social backgrounds; girls with this position generally marry above
their station without sacrificing love. Women under this aspect frequently trip to the altar with the
boss or his son. In a man's horoscope you are a favorite with women, lucky in love and in other
things too; loyal, devoted, and ardent, the prototype of the Great Lover. Idealism lends a curious
glamour to your appearance, for you are easy to look at, and your idealism sticks out all over you,
throwing a kind of magnetic aura around you. It's sex appeal but also something more idealistic
than that - the appeal of a Janet Gaynor rather than of a Mae West. You love nice things and have
an exquisite, as well as a lavish, taste. In both emotional and material matters this is a highly
intensifying influence and will heighten and tend to improve any other aspects to the Sun or to
Venus.

Sun Square Saturn Orb: 06°24'
You have ambition strongly marked, a sense of your own dignity and worth, and a
determination to make the world recognize you. You have a tremendous inner drive, together with a
well-formed purpose. In a man's horoscope especially, this will meet with a high degree of success
in the material world. You do best when working independently, away from the place of your birth
and the home of your parents. So long as you stick closely to home and mother, or the hereditary
pattern, responsibilities will weigh you down, and obligations will be foisted on you which impede
your material progress though they strengthen your ultimate purpose. But as soon as you are on
your own, among strangers, your rise begins, and it usually goes on steadily till you stand at some
point of importance. You create your own opportunities. You take advantage of every twist and
turn of circumstance. A sort of shrewd hardness develops with the years, and the way of the world
is an open book to you. You are steady, calm, persistent, wary, suspicious, and skeptical. You know
which side your bread is buttered on, and how to get the butter. You are capable of living a very
austere life if it suits your purposes. No personal matter is likely to interfere with your ambition,
and you gain a reputation for being machine-like in your precision and purposes. This is a
somewhat Machiavellian position. The danger is always that pride and an inability to flex with later
circumstances will cause your downfall. You stick to the ship till it sinks, less from principle than
from pride, and go down with flying colors, arrogant and defiant to the end, and still conscious of
your own worth and right. In a woman's horoscope these same qualities appear to some extent with
less aggression and more tact, and they do not make for the same progress in a woman's chart, nor
for the same high achievement. Restrictions and responsibilities are likely to hem you in, for you
are strong for duty and obligations and stick with an admirable adhesiveness to any task which life
sets you. Also, in a woman's chart, this means early trouble through men, frequently starting with
the father, who may be poor and unsuccessful, and continuing with difficulty in one form or
another through sweethearts and husband. This aspect gives you fortitude, philosophy, and the
ability to see through the difficult experiences which life may offer.
Sun Trine Uranus Orb: 06°57'
One of the indexes of long life, a strong physical heredity, and vitality. In addition to these
physical qualities, you have a progressive mental outlook, strongly tinged with originality, and any
plans that you organize will be pushed through with a certain dash and comprehension of total
results that knits the parts together strongly. Organization, either of undertakings or of knowledge,
is your strong point. You see things in the large rather than the particular. This position makes you
a leader of thought and action. Your originality is not tinged with the bizarre, but has a wholesome
practical quality about it. You are a very expansive person, looking at things in the large. You'll
indulge in large independent ventures which will succeed or fail according to the other indications
of the horoscope. You always build on the grand scale, and in the grand manner, for a certain
magnanimity of approach and magnificence of outlook characterizes you.
Sun Trine Neptune Orb: 05°57'
Your emotional and intellectual sides are nicely blended and give you a good deal of quiet
charm and magnetism. Your intuitions are strong, and your critical faculties are aided by innate
good taste. You are likely to have the wish to create artistically, but this aspect alone will not bring
the power, though if other aspects to the Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mercury show creative powers,

this will materially aid their expression and help to bring recognition. You have in any case a
genuine appreciation for beauty, poetry, and music and will be found among the patrons of art
galleries, operas, concerts, and the theater. This aspect also supports the health and aids the general
material welfare.
Sun Opposite Pluto Orb: 03°15'
Power is important to you but, without introspection, this power is likely to be a "bluff," a show
you put on to impress others. With introspection, you can use your clear perspective on your
motivations to give a solid sense of purpose and determination to everything you do. Hidden
resentments can trip up even your most well-intentioned actions, so self-knowledge is essential for
success. Winning is important to you, so you could become a master of tricks and manipulation.
The lesson is the proper application of power, so that success comes through the use of your
magnetism and inner strength rather than through the use of dirty tricks. Try to be for things as
intensely as you are against them.
Moon
While the Sun's position by sign determines what motives and urges dominate your life as it
meets the naked eye, the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may
not be expressed or realized in your life. When you "know what you mean but you can't say it," it is
your Moon that knows it and your Sun that can't say it. "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for
tears" are the thoughts of your Moon's nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrow, the secret
dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can't get across to the world, or which the world
doesn't comprehend or value - these are the products of the Moon in your horoscope. When you are
misunderstood, it is your Moon nature, expressed imperfectly through the Sun sign, that you feel is
betrayed. When you know what you ought to do, but can't find the right way to do it, it is your
Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. Also, when you "don't know why I
said that," it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun (if you are innerly satisfied with the
involuntary speech), or the Sun expressing against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with
what has slipped out). Things you know without thought - intuitions, hunches, instincts - are the
products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel are truly your deepest self belong to the
Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business. Whatever you
feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world,
is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth.
Moon in Scorpio
You take yourself seriously, conjuring up the image of a profound, wise and consequential
person. To live up to this private picture in reality is a lifetime task; for you are your own accusing
angel; your spirit stands aloof from the antics of your body, criticizing often, approving sometimes,
always holding before the eyes of your soul a standard of profundity and depth which the poor flesh
does not always achieve. Your standards are moral only in the highest and most general sense, with
the morality of heaven and hell rather than of the confining flesh. You may be, or may become,
angelic; but in the process you may first be the devil's child, following your instincts even to the
brink of The Pit, strong in the consciousness that "if I am the devil's child, I must do as the devil

bids." A mystic strength enshrouds you even in weakness; you are supported by inner, perhaps
unexpressed, convictions; you know what you're doing, even when no one else in the world does,
when your physical body acts strangely, and when your brain and your speech refuse to explain,
even to yourself. There is a good deal of martyr in you; if you get the idea that your special genius
requires a destructive course, you will follow it with whole-souled intensity, to the despair of your
rational nature and all your friends. By the same token, if you get the idea that your genius requires
self-betterment, self-sacrifice, even to monasticism, you will follow that, often to great heights.
Your will is powerful; it will always work overtime on the side of the image you conjure of
yourself. To conjure a high image which requires controlled actions for its realization is your way
to control of self and others and to the high successes of which you are capable.
Following are the aspects to your Moon. Look to the trines and sextiles to give you charm and
clear-thinking; and to the squares and oppositions to provide you with concentration and driving
force.
Moon Opposite Mercury Orb: 01°09'
You are talkative, expressive, witty. You may not have a trained mind, but this doesn't keep you
from occupying yourself with mental pursuits, either as a hobby or as a mode of gaining a
livelihood. What you lack in persistence you make up in glibness and facility. Only in
extraordinary instances will this accompany the artistically creative ability of the poet or dramatist;
but it will lead you into some writing or speaking occupation - secretarial, advertising, public
speaking such as radio, salesmanship, etc. - anything where wit, cleverness, and knowing all the
answers is an asset. You have a tendency to talk too much. You are not logical and have to make a
conscious and serious effort to keep to the main track of the discussion. Mental training is what you
need - strict schooling, which likely as not you ran away from when you were very young. You are
likely to skim over the surface of things mental and get by on your wits rather than by intense
application. But with your cleverness, wit, and adaptability you will get by!
Moon Opposite Venus Orb: 08°32'
This aspect doesn't make you very sociable and is likely to impair popularity by making you
scornful of the things that have to be done to achieve it. Your attitude is that you just won't be
bothered - if they want you, let them come for you. You have to learn to go out of your way more
for people. The truth of the matter is that you are sensitive, have a sort of inferiority complex about
your popularity, and dread the idea of pushing yourself forward, with the result that periodically,
through sheer discouragement, you push yourself in the wrong way and at the wrong time. Look
around you at the people who are well liked and try to take a leaf from their book. There is great
sorrow through social and romantic matters. This is a difficult aspect for material matters, for you
spend money foolishly, and have to cultivate good business sense. You are a real spendthrift at
heart; getting rid of money amounts to a genius with you. You are emotionally temperamental and
can weep buckets when you are hurt, or when you realize you've hurt someone else; for you are
gentle, and wouldn't willfully hurt anyone. But for all that, you do.

Moon Sextile Jupiter Orb: 03°21'
You are idealistic, humanitarian, and expansive in your outlook, animated by genuine charity,
and probably in a position to make it practical. You are cheerful, optimistic, good-humored, and
tactful. Courtesy is innate in you - one of nature's gentlefolk. You have excellent family
connections especially on your mother's side, and probably some financial help from them in gifts
or legacies. Necessity has never taught you to be careful of money, which you more or less take for
granted. If put to it, your earning powers are good, for friends put you in the way of earning.

The ideas that were instilled in you by your parents, church and society will undergo changes
throughout your life until your religious and philosophical views are distinctly your own. This type
of creative adaptability makes you able to forgo selfish concerns and direct your efforts toward the
betterment of all. Artistic and/or psychic talents are possible.
Pluto
Pluto relates to the ability to let go of things, to get rid of irrelevant prejudices and outdated
habit patterns. It relates to subconscious feelings, inner urges and repressed emotions. A strong
Pluto gives the ability to see the hidden side of life, and thus bestows power on the native - power
which can be used for good or ill. In the same sign as the Moon, Pluto gives a deep psychological

Pluto in Scorpio

Sexual matters are the main manifestation of Pluto in Scorpio. There has been an alarming
spread of the AIDS virus. Questions arise and demand consideration about what constitutes safe,
responsible sex. Free mores of the '60s and '70s have revealed a need to concern ourselves with the
implications of what we still welcome as more open attitudes about sex. Sexual violence and rape
have also come to the fore. Hardly a day goes by when there's not some story, great or small, in the

aspects that he considered to be the most significant and only those are shown in this report. The
dates shown only represent the times when the aspect is exact; its influence is felt for weeks,
months, and sometimes even years around this time. A planet will often make the same aspect
several times in one year before it leaves that area of the zodiac and moves on. This is due to the
planet appearing to go backward or retrograde for a period of time and crossing and recrossing the
aspect point. When this happens the effect of the aspect can be spread out over a considerable time
and in this report the aspect and text will be printed for each time it becomes exact, although this
series of aspects represents only one pass through this phase of its cycle. Remember that each
transiting aspect is part of its over-all cycle and indicates a change of direction as well as an event.
The cycle for a planet is the time it takes that planet to travel the entire 360° of the zodiac,
beginning at the point where the planet is found at birth (the conjunction point), moving to the 90°
point which Lewi calls the "lower square", then moving to the opposition or 180° point. Then it
begins to move back towards the starting point, at the 270° point, or 90° away from the starting
point, the planet is at its "upper square", and then it returns to the conjunction point where a new
cycle is begun. Lewi will occasionally refer to these points in his text by name. In general all
transits, whether of a planet to its own place or of one planet to another, mark cycles of growth
beginning at the conjunction point, growing through the first square, fully grown at the opposition
point, beginning to recede at the second or upper square, and finally starting a new cycle as it
reaches the conjunction point again.
How long any aspect will be in effect is determined by the speed of the planet making the
aspect (the first planet , i.e. Mars in Mars Opposite Sun). One Mars cycle is about two or two and
one-half years and so a Mars aspect will last about 20 to 30 days. Jupiter takes about 12 years for
its cycle and so its aspects could last around 4 months, while Saturn with a 29 year cycle will last 9
months or even more if it turns retrograde. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are all long range aspects
and usually represent a time of 2 or more years. While Saturn and the outer planets indicate long
range influences in your life, Mars aspects will identify important months and Jupiter will identify
important years. Not every occurrence of these will be of striking importance. But within a larger
Saturn cycle or Uranus period of great importance, these briefer influences will be found to act as
