Planet Aspects
The Lights: The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us
something about how things were when we were born. Each planet points to special qualities
within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights,"
the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and
the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. They have much to tell us as to
where we have been and where we are headed.
The Sun: Your Self and Future
From the Sun comes light, that which draws us into life. The Sun represents all the changes
we have not yet taken, that part of us that we have not yet experienced but are headed toward.
The Sun represents our identity, or self, in that it is toward these that we are moving and
developing. Thus, it also represents that which we will become: older people, authorities --
those we look toward, or up to. Our essence, or future. Teachers, gurus, and older (more
experienced) people are represented by the Sun. The Sun is "hot stuff," those further up the road

Mars: Drive and Emotions
Mars is the planet of emotion and inner motivation or drive. When we search for the
meaning of something, life or whatever, it is Mars that urges us on, keeps us searching. Mars
also drives us against things, too and sends us into war and combat. The urgency of Mars, the
search for meaning, is identical to the need for union, yoga, and marriage. Mars is the planet of
union, and marriage is the most common form of yoga. When we have questions about the
opposite sex, we are looking at the planet Mars.
You are powerfully motivated, even driven, have a hot temper, and tend to be impulsive.

how we discover ourselves (Uranus), how we understand and accept these discoveries
(Neptune), and, in time, how we depend and identify with them (Pluto).
Uranus: Break-Thrus & Insights
Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of
getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us.
The planet that has to do with how we get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us
is Uranus. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and
understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions
and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary.

Introduction
Grant Lewi (1902 - 1951) is a legendary figure among twentieth century astrologers. He was a
writer and editor for the two largest astrological magazines of the time. His two books, Heaven
Knows What and Astrology for the Millions , were the first astrological books to become best
sellers and even today, over fifty years later, they remain among the best introductions to the
subject of astrology.
The astrological interpretations found in Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions
were unique, fresh, and simple. Llewellyn George, the prominent astrologer of the time, remarked
that Lewi's interpretations must be intuitive because they were unlike any that had been written
before him. Today these interpretations remain energetic and forceful and, though some references
are now dated, Lewi's text still provides some of the clearest insights found anywhere in the
literature of astrology.
Lewi was determined to make astrology more accessible to the average person, but while
popularizing the subject he never watered it down or reduced it to the level found in "sun sign"
astrology. Writing before computers were available, he made his books function as the computer,
providing the reader with tables to generate their own charts or horoscopes and then linking his
interpretations to the information found there. Lewi would have made good use of the computer, so
much in his books seem to anticipate them. In his writing he tried to emulate the interpretation
process by using a computerless version of artificial intelligence: the meaning of a planet in a sign
doesn't stand alone but is modified by the other aspects found in your chart. Many of his comments
depend on a combination of factors and for this reason you will sometimes find that he has
something different to say about an aspect in your chart than he does for the same aspect in your
friend's chart.
This report calculates your chart for you and then collects all of Lewi's comments strictly
according to the astrological factors found there. The text contained here is valid even for those
who don't know their time of birth - Lewi focused on those factors that are in effect throughout the
birthday. The only exception to this is the case of the Moon which can move between 12 and 14
degrees in a day, so if the positions were calculated for noon then the Moon could be as much as 6
or 7 degrees different and possibly even change signs. If you don't know your time and the texts
that involve the Moon seem unlikely, you may wish to compare reports done for the beginning and
the end of the day.
At all times, Lewi’s aim has been to show how astrology can be used as an aid in living a more
satisfying and fulfilling life. Astrology offers indications and pointers - and sometimes insights - to
situations that you find in life. It doesn’t tell you what to do about them, but if it offers you a better
understanding of the situation, then you are in a better position to decide for yourself what to do. To
quote Grant Lewi:
"It is not limitations that eats out the heart, but inaction, the knowledge of powers not used, the
sense of having failed to develop to the utmost. The overcoming of fate is not the overcoming of

limitations: that is impossible. It is the exercise of free will, the assertion of the full self, expanding
to its utmost with the tools at hand, in the circumstances that are set. Astrology, through the
interpretation of the horoscope, assists men to the achievement of their maximum by indicating to
them the lines along which their will may be most progressively applied, the goals to be sought,
and the individual means by which each one may arrive at the outermost boundaries of his world."
Horoscope of Birth
Your horoscope of birth is the blueprint of your personality and character as indicated by the
position of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets on the date of your birth. This section is
devoted to each of these members of the solar system.
The planets are the antennae and arms of the horoscope, of which the body and soul are the Sun
and Moon. No planet will ever cause you to act counter to the testimony of the Sun and Moon in
their combined influence on you. Remember this when you proceed with the following readings.
All planetary vibration must be considered in light of the basic solar-lunar readings, for these are
your character, your basic nature, which the planets will help or hinder but cannot materially
change.
According to the sign position of your Sun, one planet will be more important than the others
and should probably be read first. Your Sun is in Virgo and your dominant planet is Mercury. Not
only the action of this ruling planet will be very important in your life, but also the attribute over
which it rules. Thus Gemini, ruled by Mercury, lives a great deal in the senses; Libra, ruled by
Venus, responds most readily to emotional stimuli; and so on. Study your ruler carefully.
Remember in all planetary readings that they work within the pattern of your solar-lunar nature;
never against it. The synthesis of your horoscope from the following series of paragraphs to a
working unit depends on your keeping this in mind, which will enable you to weld all the readings
into a unified and significant whole.
Sun in Virgo and Moon in Capricorn
You are a very well-integrated personality, with a fine mind, critical rather than creative; and
you rise to a position of some influence and authority and to worldly security. A fundamentally
serious, even morose, strain underlies your sense of humor. You are conscious of the frailties of
human nature and eager to do your share to improve them intellectually. You will leave the giving
of tangible charity to someone else while you're working on the human mind. Your passions tend to
be of the mind rather than of the flesh; and your success comes, whether in business or professional
life, through accuracy, mental soundness and devotion to duty rather than through personal
magnetism. Your magnetism is late in asserting itself, and you plug through your first years by
main strength and ignorance, with a fixed devotion to your purpose, incapable of being put off by
unkind circumstances. Later in life your charm develops. You are quietly magnetic, restrained even
when you are most eager, and have a keen sense of good taste that is a valuable social asset.

You will speak your mind frankly and even brutally where an idea is in question; but you are
unfailingly considerate of people's feelings. Thus, you supply in the milk of human kindness what
you appear to lack in warmth, and endear people to you steadily and permanently rather than
flashily and insecurely. You are constant in love and in friendship and delight in taking the
unpopular side of a question, which you may well enough succeed in making the popular side, for
you are extremely persuasive, with a flow of language so glib as to obscure the fundamental depth
of what you have to say. You are more voluble in speech than your otherwise reserved nature
would seem to warrant, but this is only part of your intellectual sureness and precision, which gives
you self-confidence where ideas are involved.
You have increased shyness, but great persistence and eventual recognition. There is an erratic
and explosive independence. Much success through independence, though periodic unpopularity
impedes progress. Nerves are an especially important consideration.
Sun
The Sun indicates the appearance you will present before the world and the psychological bias
which will dominate your actions. What you seem, and why, are told in the reading for your Sun. In
many ways the Sun is the dominant force in your horoscope and in your life. Other influences,
especially that of the Moon, may modify the Sun's influence, but nothing will cause you to depart
very far from the basic solar pattern. For this reason a whole literature and a whole business have
grown up around Sun-sign astrology; and many people exist who think there is nothing more to the
horoscope than knowing what "sign you were born in" and what the Sun in that sign means. This is
a mistake, as you will discover when you have read the influence of the other bodies. But
throughout your reading, keep in mind always the basic influence of the Sun, and remember that all
other influences must be interpreted in terms of it, especially in so far as other influences play a
visible role in your life. You may think, dream, imagine, hope to be a thousand things, according to
your Moon and your other planets, but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of
your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help
from planetary vibrations.
Sun in Virgo

To discover the motivating drive in the life of any Virgoan, it is necessary to look
at the work he is doing; for so deep is Virgo's utilitarian sense that he identifies himself with his
work and is quite willing to lose himself in it. His personality and character development depend, to
a peculiar extent, on the nature of the work he has set himself, for he will be as big or as small as

his job or mission. He is capable of becoming single-tracked, absorbed and narrow over whatever
he happens to fall into. He is capable of making work his god, and thus going high and far in a
chosen direction. He is capable of expanding his spirit by selecting a career somehow related to
service. He is capable of the extremes of self-denial if he thinks his work calls him to that. And he
is also capable of feeling that his work requires self-immolation, self-limitation and self-sacrifice to
an inordinate degree.However you figure it, the puzzle of his nature will be solved if you find his
attitude toward the hub of his universe, his work. So true is this that when you run across an
unemployed Virgoan you have the most woebegone and incomplete personality in the world. In
losing his work, Virgo loses his whole reason for being. In its best forms, this makes for efficiency
and brilliance in the performance of duty, and it may take the sense of duty into very humane
realms of selflessness. In its worst form, it makes for narrowness of outlook, great inability to talk
anything but shop, lack of interest in anything not related to work. So engrossed does Virgo
become in his job (talk, mission, message or whatever he calls it) that he sometimes seems intent
on destroying all the rest of the personality that doesn't belong to his work. He loses interest in
extracurricular activities, so that his life is one long routine of keeping the nose to the grindstone,
and he is unhappy when for some reason or other the grindstone stops or his nose gets away from it.
To fix the aim high, to select a job that requires diverse talents and wide knowledge, is Virgo's best
bet for a well-rounded life. If he has the misfortune to be able to find progress and security in a rut,
he is likely to see only the progress and not realize it is a rut. He needs activities, companions, fun,
diversions, hobbies to broaden his life, and should seek these along constructive lines lest his
overtaxed body and brain force him to seek them in undesirable forms of escapism, brooding and
introversion.
Following are the aspects to your Sun. In a general way, the trines and sextiles to your Sun
make ease, contentment, happiness, luck; while squares and oppositions give you energy, drive,
success, ambition. Conjunctions bring both energy and luck, and are translatable in terms of
whether the Sun receives squares or trines, along with the conjunction. Similarly, squares and trines
to the Sun together bring success through work and perseverance, and luck develops in proportion
to the work done and the effort extended.

The qualities of luck, energy, magnanimity, and good spirits here are pronounced. The creative
urge is also brought out. You have lots of vitality and optimism, together with a broad, tolerant,
philosophic viewpoint - a sort of hail-fellow-well-met person making friends readily and generally
keeping them. This is an excellent position for business. With your Sun square Saturn you find a
successful career of considerable scope and influence. In a professional or artistic career this
insures financial return. No poet with this aspect ever starved in a garret, or anywhere else, for that
matter. You spend freely and convivially, and your abundant vitality makes it possible for you to

You have ambition strongly marked, a sense of your own dignity and worth, and a
determination to make the world recognize you. You have a tremendous inner drive, together with a
well-formed purpose. In a man's horoscope especially, this will meet with a high degree of success

in the material world. You do best when working independently, away from the place of your birth
and the home of your parents. So long as you stick closely to home and mother, or the hereditary
pattern, responsibilities will weigh you down, and obligations will be foisted on you which impede
your material progress though they strengthen your ultimate purpose. But as soon as you are on
your own, among strangers, your rise begins, and it usually goes on steadily till you stand at some
point of importance. You create your own opportunities. You take advantage of every twist and
turn of circumstance. A sort of shrewd hardness develops with the years, and the way of the world
is an open book to you. You are steady, calm, persistent, wary, suspicious, and skeptical. You know
which side your bread is buttered on, and how to get the butter. You are capable of living a very
austere life if it suits your purposes. No personal matter is likely to interfere with your ambition,
and you gain a reputation for being machine-like in your precision and purposes. This is a
somewhat Machiavellian position. The danger is always that pride and an inability to flex with later
circumstances will cause your downfall. You stick to the ship till it sinks, less from principle than
from pride, and go down with flying colors, arrogant and defiant to the end, and still conscious of
your own worth and right. In a woman's horoscope these same qualities appear to some extent with
less aggression and more tact, and they do not make for the same progress in a woman's chart, nor
for the same high achievement. Restrictions and responsibilities are likely to hem you in, for you
are strong for duty and obligations and stick with an admirable adhesiveness to any task which life
sets you. Also, in a woman's chart, this means early trouble through men, frequently starting with
the father, who may be poor and unsuccessful, and continuing with difficulty in one form or
another through sweethearts and husband. This aspect gives you fortitude, philosophy, and the
ability to see through the difficult experiences which life may offer.
Sun Square Uranus Orb: 00°04'
You've sown your wild oats - and how! Your intellectual development was a good deal in
advance of your emotional development, and as a result you had ideas, notions, theories, of
independence and of human relations which you put into practice, considerably to the despair of
your elders. You're a liberal in every way, with advanced social, political, and personal ideas.
Individualism is very important to you, and your own ego comes first. As you grow older this
outlook broadens from the purely personal to the more general; you turn from egocentric to
humanitarian, interested in large ideas, large groups of people, social problems in the large. With
your Mercury sextile Venus and Sun trine Jupiter, your mental outlook is very inclusive,
developing out of a strictly selfish rut into a genuine feeling for humanity. This is one of the aspects
of idealism but on its way to that state it goes through many ramifications. You have been dejected
and depressed and discouraged; probably you've had your share of unconventional and erratic love
affairs. You always tend to be something of a romantic; no matter how much you control, or how
much you learn to translate the personal into the impersonal, an adventurous spirit keeps gnawing
at you. This is the aspect of Ulysses, forever wandering the seas - even when he's sitting by his
hearth with Penelope. This adventurous urge, leashed and controlled and directed by a sound mind
such as is indicated by your Mercury sextile Venus and Sun trine Jupiter, will produce works of art,
for the creative urge is powerful, with a touch of inspirationalism. Translate your
adventuresomeness to intellectual, rather than geographical or personal variety, and the world is at
your feet.
Your violently temperamental nature is capable of being leashed by an equally great will power
into big constructive action. With your Moon square Mars, your sex-nature needs control.

In any case, you have a periodically explosive temper and must learn the lessons of cooperation
both with the world in general and with individuals. You tend to think that you are right and all the
rest of the world is crazy, which may be true but doesn't make much of a hit with the world.
Moon
While the Sun's position by sign determines what motives and urges dominate your life as it
meets the naked eye, the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may
not be expressed or realized in your life. When you "know what you mean but you can't say it," it is
your Moon that knows it and your Sun that can't say it. "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for
tears" are the thoughts of your Moon's nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrow, the secret
dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can't get across to the world, or which the world
doesn't comprehend or value - these are the products of the Moon in your horoscope. When you are
misunderstood, it is your Moon nature, expressed imperfectly through the Sun sign, that you feel is
betrayed. When you know what you ought to do, but can't find the right way to do it, it is your
Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. Also, when you "don't know why I
said that," it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun (if you are innerly satisfied with the
involuntary speech), or the Sun expressing against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with
what has slipped out). Things you know without thought - intuitions, hunches, instincts - are the
products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel are truly your deepest self belong to the
Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business. Whatever you
feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world,
is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth.
Moon in Capricorn
You conceive yourself as a practical, hardheaded individual who can compete successfully with
the world on its own terms and who finds therein his deepest satisfaction and greatest success. The
game itself, rather than the stakes, interests you; you aren't likely to be grasping of money, but you
will fasten onto all the power in sight. The security of your soul lies in authority. As a result your
chances of success are great, because you don't have to do any play-acting in looking for it: the
contest is the very breath of your spirit. Some of the greatest leaders of the world have Moon in
Capricorn, and owe their success to the image of success that always plays on their mind. Sad are
the cases of Moon in Capricorn who get the image inverted: whose great inner need is no less for
success, but who feel themselves frustrated and incapable ever of achieving it, and who in
consequence become bitter and hard in failure. The free flow of your intuitions, if you don't try too
hard, will carry you where you want to go. Your instinct may not be for kindness, charity,
fellowship, love, but in your depths you won't miss these when you command authority and respect.
Dare to be yourself, to seek what you want by the means that are required, even if being true to
yourself means being false to softer things required by softer people. You are cast for a certain role
and must play in character if you are to get yourself over the footlights. You can't sway the
audience by acting another part: they spot phoniness quickly. But they will recognize the power of
your true role when you play it truly. And, as you must never forget, to win recognition as an
important and powerful person is the deep desire of your heart.

Moon Square Mars Orb: 00°09'
You started out in life like a house afire - all energy and intelligence and even brilliance, for
this is the aspect of the child who is thought to be a genius in his early and formative years. Your
mind was quick, apt, facile, expressive, and able to absorb and give back knowledge readily, so that
you were the delight of your parents and teachers, giving promise of great achievement in later life.
In many ways you were extraordinarily precocious throughout youth; and at any time in life you
possess an exceptional mentality and great possibilities. Your mind is analytic and scientific rather
than artistic and creative; and although the creative urge is powerful, the creative force is not
usually present with this configuration. Anything that requires knowledge, factual application,
technical ease, or critical insight, is your forte, and in these fields you can go far. As a scientist,
mathematician, critic, or technician, your mind is invaluable, and the independence and originality
of your thought processes enable you to forge to the front. There is with this aspect some danger
that after the first glow and flush of youth is past, the great urge to better and improve yourself will
in some subtle and inexplicable way be dissipated and lost. A sort of mental inertia may settle over
you in which accomplishment becomes difficult. It requires a tremendous amount of will power to
bring the promise of this aspect to fruition. There is a tendency to relax internally, with an intimate
knowledge of your own worth as your pillow, and forget that no worth is worth anything if it is not
made apparent in the world as it is. You can overcome this inertia. This is a position also of great
nervous tension, of the sort which is classically supposed to accompany genius. You may be
tempted to seek escape from this tension in a variety of artificial anodynes - either in simple
daydreaming and imagining what you might be or what you have been or what you are going to be;
or in the more concrete escapes, which are also the more dangerous escapes. Liquor or alcohol in
any form is poison to you, either to your digestive tract, or to your psychic, mental, and nervous
state. Similarly, you should avoid the use of any drug or soporific stronger, let us say, than aspirin,
and seek to find the solution to your tensions in more constructive mediums. You should practice
relaxation deliberately. Get plenty of sleep, and in every way try to cut down the stress of your
existence, both internal and external. You have tremendous possibilities - perhaps even genius - and
you owe it to yourself and the world to make the most of them.
Moon Conjunct Neptune Orb: 00°03'
You have great insight into studies, facts, and people. Your intuitions and hunches are keen and
very realistic to you. There is a danger of your becoming confused and muddled in your mental
processes, either through absorption in imagination, lack of facts, or psychological biases arising
from heredity and early experience. You believe so strongly in yourself, your intuitions, and your
opinions, that you are likely to fly in the face of good sound horse sense. Your imagination runs
away with you and you think that because you believe it and will it, it must be so. This is one of the
insidious aspects of introversion, and you are capable of withdrawing into yourself or into a dream
world with your pet theories, to the injury of your progress in the world outside. In a creative artist,
this position lends inspiration of a high order. In executives and business people, it lends intuitions
and magnetism, which aid progress. But in negative horoscopes it must be guarded against, for its
danger is subtle and undermining. You become a spiritual leader of great magnetism but must

The need for this position is exactness (the power to pin things down to facts) and reserve (the
holding in of information, emotions, and plans, for you tend to tell everything, and thus to weaken
your concentrative powers which should help you in achievement).
Moon Sextile Pluto Orb: 03°20'
Quality, not quantity, is the hallmark of your emotional make-up. You like having a few close
friends rather than spreading your feelings and loyalties thinly over a wide variety of people. You
are apt to be fair in your judgments of others, evaluating inner qualities rather than superficial traits.
Warmth, loyalty and devotion mark your emotional reactions. You are protective of loved ones
without smothering them.
Mercury
Mercury is the sense-impression antennae of your horoscope. His position by sign indicates
your reactions to sights, sounds, odors, tastes and touch impressions, affording a key to the attitude
you have toward the physical world around you. Mercury is the messenger through which your
physical body and brain (the Sun) and your inner nature (the Moon) are kept in contact with the

aspects that he considered to be the most significant and only those are shown in this report. The
dates shown only represent the times when the aspect is exact; its influence is felt for weeks,
months, and sometimes even years around this time. A planet will often make the same aspect
several times in one year before it leaves that area of the zodiac and moves on. This is due to the
planet appearing to go backward or retrograde for a period of time and crossing and recrossing the
aspect point. When this happens the effect of the aspect can be spread out over a considerable time

How long any aspect will be in effect is determined by the speed of the planet making the

its cycle and so its aspects could last around 4 months, while Saturn with a 29 year cycle will last 9
