What is the Ascendant? The ascendant or rising sign is the sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the exact time when you were born. It is essential that you know your exact time of birth to have an accurate reading. The ascendant is located on the cusp of your first house. On the horoscope the directions are opposite to those we traditionally know. In other words east is on the left side or 9 o’clock position and west at 3 o’clock. North is at the bottom or 6 o’ clock and south at the top or 12 o’clock. You will often meet people who do not seem at all like their sun sign. This is the influence of the ascendant playing out. Your mannerisms and some personality traits can be attributed to your rising sign. The ascendant represents our outer personality and also our physical attributes. It is the image we project to the world. The sign on the ascendant represents the way we are seen by others, our facade. The illusion that is created when we see planets rising in the east they seem larger than they really are. This is true for the meaning of the ascendant in the natal chart as well: It is the part of us that seems larger to others than it really is. It is also significant in that it describes how we interact with our surroundings. Your rising sign is the colored glass that others see you through. The planet that rules the sign on the ascendant is known as the chart ruler. This is significant as the placement of this planet can give a lot of insight into the personality of the native. Discussion topic:
As we will be looking at each sign in the next section we can talk in general about instances where others have remarked that you do not seem like your sun sign at all. What made them say that? I am cancerian with an aquarius ascendant and others often remark that I appear quite aloof and detached, whereas most of the cancerians they know are moody and emotional. This is normally the case with people who do not know you very well, more of a first impression. IP: Logged |

Ah so interesting! Thanks! I am Aquarius and have scorp rising (I am pretty sure) and sometimes people at first might think I have more scorp tendencies because I can be very passionate (about everything) and aggressive. This explains alot! ------------------ Food is the only art that nourishes! IP: Logged |

Very cool! My Virgo Rising far outshines my Cappy Sun in many instances! : ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

Hi Moonshadaw I find the ascendant a fascinating discussion and am really looking forward to seeing how everyone personally experiences the difference between that and their Sun sign. Why I am so interested......???? Well being a Virgo sun with Virgo rising - with me what you see is what you get So it's difficult to seperate the two for me - other than maybe on first meetings my quieter Virgo side kicks in..... I am Cancer Rising with the Moon on the cusp of the 8th House. This aspect of placement helps me relate and communicate more kindly, compassionately, and considerate with others. These soften the edges of my Aries Sun, and makes me more intuitive and strategic with expending my energies.

I'd like to make a comment that I have made before on this board; As we age (grow)we tend to display more of our sun sign and less of our Ascendant sign. The Ascendant sign indicates the way we deal with the world and in some cases performs as a defensive mechanism to protect the fragital Moon sign personality. double signs, Ascendant and Sun the same tend to display that quality from day 1. What you got, is what you get, so to speak. I have a posting "3 aspects of man" on the astrology board that goes into this deeper. My 2 cents Lanny IP: Logged |

Hello! When I was younger much younger I was definitely wearing my Scorpio ascendant like a shield. No one believed I was a soft ,sweet Pisces.I use myScorpio ascending even now because althoug I never believed it others around me have repeatedly told me that the outside or first impression doesn't fit the personal me. SO I have learnt to smile and use that Jupiter conjunct Asc, so others feel more at ease around me.Hate making people uncomfortable. As I get older I am aware of being less suspicious of people, more open and more the real Pisces me.But then I am more accepting of that side of me also. P.s.My Aquarius moon is the same as my mothers which is curious since doesn't hte moon represent my mother? My father was Socrpio ascendant and I used to always be compared to him.Favorably.Now I notice the same thing with my children. My son has Aquarius moon same place as myself and his grandmother.IP: Logged |

I'm a Capricorn Ascendant, Cancer Moon, and Virgo sun. I used my Capricorn Ascendant quite a lot as a child to protect my sensitive Cancer Moon.Lanny IP: Logged |

I remember reading somewhere that the ascendant is the style in which the artist/person paints her Life, the signature,I suppose for me Scorpio would be very dramatic colours almost theatrical, very 'opera'or totally Zen and oriental ..THe Sun sign is the background colour (the base of the painting)which for me Pisces would be what?all I can come up with is emotions and the ocean. and the moon the palette of colours which for me is Aquarius and no half measures--black, red, gold, burgundy, indigo, very precise and distinct blocks of colours.I do that wihth my thoughts and emotions. And the rest of hte planets would be the subject of the painting/Life and the way each is found in the chart it is found inthe painting. If a particular house like the 7th ,or the 4th dominates the chart it will also dominate the painting(family and relationships would be the major subject portrayed) I'm sure someone else read this somewhere..please refresh my memory.I'd like to look it up again. I like the way it visualized it in colours and styles etc.much more imagination gripping than a simple chart with lines and digits. Also comparing people lives to works of art in progress is...inspiring.GIves you (the chart) all the tools but you're still the one with the paintbrush!

I am an Aquarius with a Gemini Asc. and many of my friends have often remarked about how "fickle" I am. Hi Lanny,Interesting, I have Cancer Rising and Capricorn Moon, the polar opposites of yours. Hmm, what do you think? I am using kindness and sensitivity to mask barren and frigid emotions? Just joking. I don't really know. Though I am curious as to what you think. Thank you for the transit reading, by the way Cheers, Aphrodite IP: Logged |

People I don't know very well see mostly my Libran Ascendant - the peace-loving, sociable people person who loves harmony and shows almost no trace of that fiery Leo ego. People whom I'm close to understand exactly what a pain in the rear I can be. For one thing, I don't handle criticism very well. What can I say? Just being true to my sun sign. Is it too much to expect the people I love to understand enough astrology to know that Leos are NOT born to be criticised?!! But seriously, I think my public image is probably 70:30 Libra:Leo. Personally, I like the way my sun and ascendant interact.I find that interesting, what you say about your ascendent shielding your moon, Lanny. Thinking about whether that applied to me when I was younger - I don't think so. (How much shielding does an Aquarius moon need, huh?) I think Leo came through pretty strongly then. I remember being quite a little show off. I've spun some terrific yarns about how cool I was and how strong and how good at Karate! LOL!! I had friends who believed I had to break a block of ice in two to gain access to my karate class, after which I had to do 20 rounds of an 800 meter playground on my knuckles. I was strong for a little 8 year old, ha? IP: Logged |

Sorry, just a quick leap off the topic: Brunhilde, at least one of the children often has Moon in his/her parents' (most often the mother) Moon or Sun sign. Interesting thread, I've been reading it and I think you've pretty much said it all. IP: Logged |

Hello! What if the ascendant is conjunct a planet? I keep telling my friends and family in all seriousness that I'm very timid and insecure but all I get are laughs.I'm sincere when I say this.I am shy and very insecure ...now that fits with the the Scorpio ascendant and Pisces sun---you know all the water, emotions, illusions, high, lows, wariness, suspicions, etc.but people don't see that right away they believe after me knowing for some time. I think it's the Jupiter conjuct my ascendant that throws people even more off. If you have a planet kissing your rising sign doesn't that also 'hide' your sun sign? IP: Logged |

I have Libra asc and cancer sun sign . moon is in cancer scorpio. As a child i was beautiful, naughty, played and laughed a lot, was witty. But then i was abused at age 10 and things changed a lot since then. In my teens , I was shy, scared of the world. Now i am 30 and let gone everything and moving on. Now I feel I do use charm again to attract my dates. I am very romantic. What a paradign shift i went thru in my life. I am very clingy inside , but very practical when it comes to matter of heart. I wish i stay this way and never show cancer traits of being clingy/attached. Lanny I hope you are proved wrong about the theory that we become more of sun sign as we grow old. I am sure it will not happen but i wish. This is a great site to learn and discuss. I am so glad I can vent it out all here . I love everyone here. IP: Logged |

interesting brunnhildem, i too have a scorp asc. conjunct jupiter. i'll have to ask around, but i don't believe i'm seen as a cool mysterious smoldering scorp- alot of the time i'm perty bubbly and excited, when i become comfortable around someone, i'm usually quite jubilant, silly and playful. now that's DEFINATELY not the scorpio talking. a lot of people say i'm really not like other tauruses they know. but indeed i am true to my sun sign.so i'm scorp asc and taurus sun. i guess part of the scorpio thing is that you dont know what's really going on under there, and i dont think i give too much away when i first meet people, hell, even when i get to know people. tho that taurus sun seems to placid and calm and collected, no one suspects there's a lot under or turbulence under there, even some of my closest friends. sometimes i feel as if im misunderstood, or that i badly express my self, or that i mean to act someway, or give some impression, but give none at all. must be the scorpio. plus i have pluto in the 12th, really hiding me away. well alright, generally i am placid and calm and whatnot, but still, when ever it gets rough under the surface, you can be sure no one ever knows it.

it's interesting to have your asc and sun opposing each other, especially if the sun is conjunct the descendant, therefore in opposition to the asc. i feel that i am constantly trying to find the balancing point between the scorp asc and taurus sun: am i material or spiritual? stable or transformative? i've read that when you also have the sun in the 7th, you need a lot of imput from others regarding your person, need alot of reflection of self-- and that's definately true for me, because sometimes i feel trapped somewhere in the middle of both and am not sure HOW i am. anyone else sense that?IP: Logged |

Hi everyone! I have Aquarius rising and a Taurus Sun...hmmm very interesting what you say Lanny, but I think I am expressing my Asc more now than before. Maybe the difference here for me is also that I have just had Uranus transiting my Asc and by the way my Moon conj my Asc. So I have quite an Aquarius energy going on when you meet me I can be aloof, very friendly with anyone and my friends vary in habits, lifestyles etc I feel my Sun keeps me grounded so that I don't fly off into the horizon ahead of my time and what I came to do Love Mystique IP: Logged |
