Mark of Insanity

I had worked with Professor Moriarty for very long time. Old man he was many wished he died soon for his discoveries in Physics rattled many scientists and had even thrown many of them out of jobs. Many went insane listening to his lectures. This included even his own colleagues. Though Moriarty certainly was very talented and intelligent in his field he was also most dreaded scientist. I was his legal assistant and I managed to got through simply because I could never understand what he was speaking.

Today too he entered his lab where I had dutifully waited. Usually work hours begin at 9 o clock but for Moriarty it can begin at midnight that day. Thankfully it was only around late afternoon, I respectfully welcomed him.

Moriarty started smoking his expensive cigar that I had purchased for him. He was so fond of this cigar yet he did not know how toxic it was to his brain. I do not know. It may be working in inverse fashion for this scientist.

"Did you know latest news?" he asked me. It is not my habit to read scientific journals and through experience I knew "latest news" could be as late as 5 years ago. So I simply said I did not.

"Astrologer Chandra Bose had won again." he said. He continued "His predictions have continued to puzzle all scientific sectors. He argues with even more violence that science cannot reach boundaries he has reached." Moriarty said with violent anger in his face "He predicted that one lady would lose her hand bag on this month and I arranged my special detectives and they did find she did lose her hand bag." Moriarty was trembling with anger.

"What do you think?" he asked me. Wiht Moriarty this question was ritual meaning I must never violate his opinions. So I said nothing.

"All objects are linked through invisible Electromagnetic Spectrum" Moriarty said "This Electormagnetic spectrum is responsible for how it affects events in History. This is explantion for astrological forces."

Moriarty replied to his own question with vehemence and determination that I thought I would fall out of my chair if only I had not caught mys-elf more solidly.

"And you know what I am going to tap into this Electromagnetic spectrum and control everything."

As usual I had no idea what he meant, so I said "You are going to do Time Travel."

"Oregon" he called loudly frightening me. Though it was my name it was too loud. "Time travel is unnecessary for me." he spoke blowing out one huge volume of smoke and leaning confidently in his chair.

"You mean you have already travelled in Time" You would say I was talking something that bordered nonsense yet that is how you should talk to Moriarty for your safety.

"Neah, I would simply change Time. Time travel is unnecessary."

Do not wonder. 'Neah' is not abusing word. It was Moriarty's way of saying 'No' when he is under effect of cigar or narcotics. Unlike you it was not first time for me listening to him speaking so I could maintain my control.

"Psychic abilities" I suggested carefully.

"This is about working in Electromagnetic Spectrum. I can simply take Past, Present or Future and change them according to my own will."

"Sir, I suggest you do not talk about this to your colleagues. Many of them are jealous of you."

"Stupid fellows" he remarked. "You know what, my first experiment is disconnecting Past and Future."

Ofcourse I did not know what he meant.

Professor Moriarty was progressing with his experiments with intensity as I went to my 'legal friend' Mixing to inform for that was my duty. Mixing is really his name. Mixing was as eccentric as many of his colleagues yet not as eccentric as Moriarty so he can be tolerated. Mixing was appointed by Police force to study what Moriarty was doing. Police used to say they are prying into Moriarty's affairs whereas they were really afraid of Moriarty.

Mixing said "Once he finished his experiment tell me, I will finish this matter off. This looks something in connection with Theory of Relativity."

Moriarty did complete his experiment within few days that he informed very clearly by shouting "Success! Success!". "You know what I have just invented Time Accelerator that disconnects Past and Future."

He took me into his lab where he had been working furiously for days. There stood one machine that seemed like enlarged version of street light that is, to my brain. There was one big bulb that shed light. When Moriarty switched on bulb started glowing and that room was filled with light.

"In this area, past and future are disconnected" Moriarty said pompously as he used to say every time he was triumpant.

This was very interesting. I stood in front of bulb. It was bright enough to blind my eyes so I left that area and blinked my eyes several times until I could get back my composure.

"Excellent, Sir" I said.

"This weekend I will give one seminar on my new invention - Time Accelerator. This is going to revolutionize Physics. Not only that I am going to proceed with Electromagnetic Spectrum."

I informed Mixing about Moriarty's new dabbling in Physics. Believe me, I do not know whether it is dabbling or not. Moriarty for that matter could have really disconnected Past and Future. But I was stranger to Physics so I explained to Mixing with best scientific jargon possible. Mixing was capable of understanding only scientific jargon - his own language. For example if you went to your house in bike, you have to tell him you used your bike to transport your physique to co-ordinates of your house. It is difficult.

That night we entered into Moriarty's lab. It was our regular theft. We did not steal anything really not yet. Every time Moriarty came with some new discovery or invention we burglar his lab and apartment just to be sure everything is safe. You can say it is honest theft.

I led Mixing into room where Moriarty had placed his Time Accelerator.

Mixing switched on and off few times simply to know what Time Accelerator is about. Then he opened his tool kit and broke it open to study its interior.

Mixing was studying interiors of Time Accelerator long time. He then said "This looks like Paricle Acceleration. This machine emits visible as well as invisible radiation."

"Visible radiation, I know for certain" I said. "It looks like car headlights".

Mixing ignored my comment same way any hi fi scientist would ignore commoner.

"He said he is accelerating Time. He also said if you switched on this machine light will come and in that area past and future are disconnected."

"Could be he is explaining particle acceleration in his usual insane manner. We will have to wait and listen to his lecture."

We left as secretly as we came.

Moriarty had invited almost all of world's prominent scientists to his lecture and many students also.

"You know what..." Moriarty began and started talking throughout that evening. Most of us pretended as if we were enthusiastically listening. Some scientists asked Moriarty many questions. Soon I slept off. Mixing was sitting next to me and woke me up towards end of lecture. I could hear Moriarty speaking about particle formation, interstellar formation and nebulae and concluded his lecture. Everyone clapped hands and hurried out of auditorium.

Mixing was one of those persons who knew about stuff Moriarty was talking.

We got into our car and Mixing took his laptop and fumbled in his computer for sometime and then said "He invented one new method of Particle acceleration. Not new, to be strict. It has been rejected as inefficient by other scientists. This radiation is capable of eliminating certain germs beyond that it has no use. Summing it up, Moriarty is playing fool another time."

"He said he was disconnecting Past and Future. I thought this is about Time Travel. You bored me with this Particles stuff."

"You thought your boss would invent Time Travel machine?"

"I really had no idea to begin with."

"Go to lab and just wait. We have got work tonight. I will be back with specialists."

I went back to lab and waited and waited. Mixing seemed never to come. I opened H.G.Wells The War of the Worlds and started reading. It was great story of Martian probes that landed on Earth during early times of Earth history. Earth people ignorant of Science took them to be living entities. These probes were contaminated with Martian microbes that started epidemics on Earth. H.G.Wells described very imaginatively how early earth men were trying to reason with martian robots that were only programmed machines. Around this time, somebody discovers that those Martian entities were really robots from another planet.

Presently Mixing arrived with two experts who looked like bodyguards.

Soon these three men dissected Time accelerator into multiple parts and photographed it accurately. Their work continued all night and I was standing there almost falling apart from drowsiness when suddenly Professor Moriarty came out from nowhere.

"What are thieves doing in my lab?"

I was first to escape. I ran out and in next moment was in my car. Next second I was in my house. I immediately fainted. When I woke up it was early afternoon. I ringed Mixing to ask what storm did we stir.

"Relax buddy it was hologram that Moriarty had installed to scare thieves. That fool had programmed it for morning 6 o clock." he said. "Forget it, I have fixed it. It just says one sentence and then disappears."

I could not figure out why Moriarty thought thieves would attack his lab during early morning. Because I had just now read about Martians, I tried to reason may be Moriarty was expecting only Martians to burgle his lab and therefore timed his threatening devices according to Martian calendars. It is certainly possible for Moriarty to do such things. It seemed reasonable.

My fears disappeared once I reached Moriarty's lab where he arrived as late as usual and started smoking cigars.

Funny thing was too many people were insane about Moriarty's claims that flood of emails was waiting for him. Many of them had requested appointments and many had asked doubts. I answered all doubts. Do not worry, Moriarty does not have time to answer doubts so I do it. I also fixed all appointments.

After finishing all this work I received email from one fellow by name Henry Longstorm that he could not attend appointment at appointed date Feb 25, 1980 and so he is cancelling that appointment.

I inquired out internet service through Video mail and one sheepish looking fellow told me "Sorry sir, there is error in computer program. Year number has changed. We will try to solve as soon as possible."

Henry Longstorm would have probably thought Moriarty had used Time accelerator to fix appointment. Pity was same year has been emailed to all fellows who wanted appointment. That is atleast 25 years back. I am sure they would all be now in insane aslyums, thanks to Time accelerator.

Moriarty continued his further work on Electromagnetic Spectrum. There were days when he would arrive before I arrived to lab. I happened to lunch with him in dining quarters one day when he demonstrated how he prepared his food. He used possibly same method in his apartment too.

He had installed device in dining quarter. He pressed one button. Upon pressing, utensils began to arrange thems-elves upon shelves and stove and started preparing food all by thems-elves. Utensils prepared good sweet smelling Sandwich and one tuning fork took it from stove and placed it on plate. It moved forward towards Moriarty automatically and Moriarty savagely (my view could be subjective) ate his Sandwich.

After Moriarty left I silently ate my lunch and then wondered why not use same method to prepare sandwich for me. However it did not work. I pressed very same button. Automatic Utensils did prepare sandwich but plate went outside dining quarters in search of Moriarty. I had no sandwich.

There are pitfalls in working with egocentric professors but this was too much.

Sometime later after I had returned to visiting room, Moriarty entered with plate in his hand and he was fuming with anger. Sandwich was missing.

"You know what there are probably spies on my trail" he said.

"It is possible, Sir. Your enemies could be hunting your lab and apartments at night to learn about your research work." I said

"I was sitting in bar and this plate had followed me from there on everywhere." I dare not say plate followed him before he went to bar. May be not. "I am sure this plate consists or is made of some kind of transmitter that records and relays whatever is happening." he continued.

I considered option of telling him plate came from his kitchen, but I felt some sense of revenge so I played it quiet.

After that Moriarty proceeded to test that plate in his lab. I never used Automatic Utensils from then on. I did not know outcome of Moriarty's research.

Moriarty's work on Electromagnetic Spectrum continued with jumps and leaps. He had allocated one section of entire lab for his experiments. He would talk to me about his experiments and I would report them to Mixing who would say I just do what I am doing.

One day Moriarty called me to demonstrate his findings. He was sitting in front of terminal and several colourful shapes were being displayed.

"What do you think?" he said.

"I have drawn such beautiful pictures in my computer." I said.

"Fool, what you see is Electromagnetic Spectrum" Moriarty barked. Every now and then Moriarty would tap keyboard and all colourful shapes would change their patterns. I pretended I was very much interested in his demonstration. There was nothing interesting though.

I told Mixing exactly what I saw. Mixing became little uneasy. "I am not sure what this fellow is upto now." he said. "As such there is no theoretical basis for Moriarty's arguments. There is no such thing that you could identify as Electromagnetic Spectrum and further arguments lead to conclusion this man is mad".

"I also think so" I said.

I thought it is better to reside in fantastic world of H.G.Wells and continued reading The War of the Worlds. Soon Mixing and his police friends concluded Moriarty was in reality Martian.

It took me as confused shock when I was told Moriarty is Martian. During that time, Astrologer Chandra Bose had started failing in his career. Moriarty told me "Explanation is very simple, Oregon. I am working on Electromagnetic spectrum. Naturally it affects Time. Soon I will change Time."

I had ability to withstand such paranormal explanations. Some days later Moriarty disappeared altogether. He did not return for several days until one entire month had passed. I was terrified and I seriously began to doubt Mixing's abilities as scientist. Had Moriarty went for Time Travel?

I had told Mixing Moriarty's explanation. Mixing appeared with his police friend Schrodinger, who told me Moriarty is certainly Martian. His disappearance for one month is quite natural. He has escaped, he said.

"As we studied Moriarty's inventions and theories, we submitted them to neurological experts to determine whether Moriary had neurological problems. Medical experts determined this intelligence does not belong to human creature at all. They compared it with ancient cave paintings and came to this excellent and correct conclusion that Moriarty is Martian."

"But H.G.Wells wrote in The War of the Worlds about robots?" I asked. I feared may be their next conclusion is Moriarty is robotic.

"That is only imagination" Schrodinger said.

Then as devastating surprise Moriarty rang. "You know what I just got one brilliant idea to solve nebular quandrums." Mixing and Schrondinger began to record this conversation.

"Where are you now?" I asked. He said "Switzerland, I forgot to tell you. I think several days had passed."

Nearly one and half months had passed.

"What are you doing in Switzerland?"

"Tourism. Forget it, Oregon. " I had fainted and did not know what else he said.

I did not stay with Moriarty for long time after that. Moriarty returned and there was news that wars were happening in dimensions other than three dimensional space.

"It is paradoxical but in higher dimensions wars are happening." one prominent scientist was talking to TV reporter. "As such now we are able to see three dimensional space. Human species is incapable of perceiving fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and higher dimensions. However it is possible to construct instruments that can penetrate into higher dimensions. Soon everyone will know what is going on in higher dimensions. We are working towards it and we would soon have success." I did not sleep that night after watching news. I asked Moriarty for explanation and as usual he said "I am changing Time, Oregon. They are stupid fellows, they do not understand." I reported this exactly to Mixing.

I was given another job in same University. Moriarty's work in Electromagnetic Spectrum progressed and he published weird enough claims regularly. Mixing told me Moriarty has made some important discoveries as well as foolish ones and nothing as he claimed. Mixing looked at complete loss and once he said "We are crossing major milestone in Spacetime." This was fantastic enough and I understood not one another word of what he said.

Many years had passed and as many of his colleagues wished Moriarty died with his work on Electromagnetic Spectrum generally unsuccessful. "Moriarty did make some important discoveries though nothing like he claimed." Mixing told me upon his death.

Everybody seemed to celebrate Moriarty's death. One Newspaper published "Thank god, Moriarty is dead!". Chandra bose accused Moriarty's scientific determinism had affected Spiritual reality devastatingly. I was afraid whether Moriarty did do something serious about time.

There was no funeral nothing "for security reasons" Police explained. Moriarty's lab was converted to museum and only certain people were permitted to enter. You need to get special permissions and Security verifications to watch his lab. I was however permitted because of my service to Police in tracking Moriarty.

I went to his lab and noticed all his inventions. Section on Electromagnetic spectrum alone was sealed by Police.

I had one brilliant idea. I walked into dining quarter. Automatic Utensils was still there intact. With curious intention, I pressed very same button.
