His ego is still fragile, and initially it is difficult for him to look at himself as he truly is, or more accurately, as he has become at this stage of his development. In the second/third stage transition Aries must begin to see what they have been doing to themselves. They must learn how to accept their faults and shortcomings. Only once they have done so, will they be ready to tackle the even more difficult task of recognizing, accepting and cultivating the greatness of their true essential selves.

To reach third stage, the Arian individual must learn how to balance his life. He must learn to care for himself without becoming overly self-centered, and to give to others without giving away his very essence. In short, he must learn self-discipline. And before self-discipline can be mastered, he must understand the value and purpose of this mastery.

It is important for Aries to acknowledge to themselves that it is in their most basic nature to be a servant of life. They must accept this as their natural role.

The second/third stage transition begins as this individual decides to seek some form of objective understanding concerning her life situation. As long as she is coping blindly with the feelings and situations in which she finds herself, she will remain in second stage. As she becomes drawn towards the quest for self-knowledge, she begins a process that will eventually reveal the undreamed of resources that lie hidden deep within her.

She must learn to become inwardly directed instead of looking outside of herself for fulfillment or distraction. Self-respect and self-appreciation must become the cornerstone upon which she is to build, and this can often be achieved through activities that make use of her innate abilities.

Usually by the time late second stage has been reached the individual in question has forgotten the exact nature of her original purpose. Her quest was to become the embodiment of unconditional love. She subtly misinterpreted this to mean that she should learn to love others unconditionally. To embody unconditional love means more than simply being able to prove that one is capable of its expression. Once the original goal is achieved, the expression of love occurs naturally and spontaneously, without a hint of fear or insecurity. However, if one does not embody love, one cannot love oneself unconditionally. And if one does not love oneself unconditionally, than a deep insecurity is bound to assert itself whenever one attempts to love someone else, even if we tell ourselves that we are not asking for anything in return.

This transition commences when the individual begins to admit to himself that he is in pain, or at the very least that his life has become too limited, and that nothing that he himself can do with his known personal resources will resolve the inner difficulties he is facing. To accept and admit this form of inner helplessness and frustration takes a great deal of courage, and the beginning of this transition is often extremely difficult, as it is for all signs.

For some Cancerians this transition may be entered with relative ease. Others will find themselves dragged kicking and screaming into the realization of their need to re-evaluate their approach to life. Those who find entry into the transition easiest are the ones who are willing to admit their deep dissatisfaction with life, and who ardently seek an alternative, realizing that personal independence is an important key which must be developed. This kind of second/third stage Cancerian hears a call to self-discovery that cannot be denied. She wishes to develop personal strength and to explore her own individual talents. She seeks to discover what share cares about most, and to move beyond merely meeting the needs of the people around her.
