Good point. (Practical consideration.)Just for fun, though, let me point out one I found. This oughtta pique your interest (and, I hope, raise at least a tiny sliver of righteous indignation in you, as it does me). I was watching a video presentation about common law, and the speaker, just as an aside, said, "Have you ever seen a document stamped 'certified true copy'? Look that phrase up. The combination of those two words actually means the opposite of what you'd think it does. It means not true." Of course, I was like "What the...?" So I pulled out Black's Law and went to work. Check this out: (Note: these dirty tricks started to be pulled in earnest with the 5th edition. When you want the whole definition, go to 4th edition or earlier.) Here's the definition from the 5th edition: quote: True copy. A true copy does not mean an absolutely exact copy but means that the copy shall be so true that anybody can understand it.
And here's the definition from the 4th edition: quote: TRUE COPY. A true copy, does not mean an absolutely exact copy but means that the copy shall be so true that anybody can understand it. It may contain an error or omission. 51 L.J.Ch. 905.
Notice what they started leaving out from 5th ed. onward? Think about that. That means that the person or organization providing you with a "true copy" of a document could omit anything they want, and it's perfectly legal. And that's just one example of this kind of chicanery. (I've found many more, but haven't bothered to remember them, specifically, since I have the dictionaries and can always find them again as needed.) IP: Logged |

Will do! Right now, I'm passing out, hopefully for a good eight hours. I just worked my second overnight shift of my new job, and have been having insomnia since three days prior.IP: Logged |
