Hi all, I'm just curious if you've all experienced this kind of thing: frequently returning to locations in dreams that (as far as you know) do not actually exist in the real world, or if they do, you've never been there, seen them or heard about them. They could be distorted/fictionalized versions of real places (like, say, you recognize the place as somehow being your home or school, but with obvious changes). In my case, I have frequently returned to the following places for a very long time, though they do not resemble any places I've been to in real life: - a dilapidated Victorian mansion that is haunted (in some dreams I am actively haunted - either by visual apparitions or purely poltergeist-like activity, or both), but sometimes when I'm there there is no active haunting, though I am aware that it is haunted. Whenever I return here in dreams, sometimes I'm alone, sometimes there are family members with me, sometimes purely fictional "dream people" who I know in the dream but have never seen in real life. Not every visit feels "scary", in fact some visits feel comforting. Every time I'm there I'm in a different room/wing, but I remember other visits in which I toured other areas of the house, but can't remember how to get there. Whenever I'm there, it's in an exploratory sense; even the scary dreams, I know I'm there to explore, not trying to run away (in fact they often end with me steeling myself against fear/dread in an effort to penetrate a wing that I haven't been to yet). And sometimes when I'm there with other people, we are actively trying to refurbish the house and catalog its objects, kind of like how we would do if we were trying to "flip" a house for the purpose of selling it. There is the sense in these dreams that the house was an inheritance of some kind from a long-dead relative, and we're trying to get it ready to sell. (Also, anyone who is with me in the dream also remembers being there before, and they all acknowledge/remember that is haunted.) - A forest glade in what appears to be late spring/early summer, very green and vibrant, sunny, lots of flowers, usually a small pond or stream. I am always here alone, there is never anyone else with me, and all I'm doing is relaxing or walking through. - A European-feeling metropolis, complete with an "old town" district with medieval buildings/castle, but surrounded by newer-built skyscrapers, normal bustling city activity, etc. It doesn't resemble any city I've actually been to or seen, and when I'm there I'm usually alone, playing the part of tourist - obviously I'm not from there and am visiting, taking in the sights, sometimes getting lost but never feeling afraid. During the dreams, it's never quite "lucid" in the fact that while I'm there I am not aware that I am actually dreaming, though I do remember IN the dream having been there before. (In fact, I am a terrible lucid dreamer; very, very rarely am I ever aware that it is not real, regardless of how surreal/impossible they are.) What sorts of places do the rest of you keep going back to? Are they happy places, or do you feel dread/fear? IP: Logged |

SpecialK--Emphatically, yes. This... phenomenon? Well, whatever it is, this feature of my dreams has been so common throughout my life that I am positive--within the context of the dream--I have been there before. IP: Logged |

This morning, before I woke up properly, I had a dream about a house I've dreamed before. A huge house that my family moves into. I was doing something with my sister, and about to take a picture of the gorgeous stairway and upper-floor where it led, when I saw a little girl looking at us from one room up there. I froze, and mentioned her to my sister. The girl threw something flannel over us, and we ran into another room. I can't remember what happened after that.I used to dream of haunted houses, all the time. Mansion-type houses, that I looked forward to exploring, only to experience a ghost, and I'd be chilled from head to toe - an icy feeling creeping through my spine. I'd wake up feeling that way. For some reason, I felt fine when I woke up (and I slept well). Maybe because I've been really isolated, and I got to spend time with my sister in dreamland. IP: Logged |

I don’t remember my dreams very often at all, but now that I think of it I did have a couple early this year that involved being with a bunch of family members in a place that felt familiar even though it wasn’t. The one I remember best was like the extended-family vacations we would take when I was a kid: too many people crowded into a rented minivan, all of us picking rooms and settling into this vacation house— except there were a handful of total strangers there as well, and we had to figure out how to get along and share the space. I’ve definitely had these general types of dreams from time to time over the years— I always figured it was basically just an expression of the way we all have to ‘rearrange the mental furniture’ from time to time, adjusting our worldview to assimilate new information. Mine have always felt pretty mundane, not scary, so I never thought about them in a spiritual way, just psychologically. But a little girl throwing a flannel blanket over you? Sounds like it’s supposed to be warm and cozy, comfortable and protected. Did you feel afraid when you started running? IP: Logged |

I can’t remember where I came across this, but I remember reading something about stroke recovery and neuroplasticity and a visualization technique called “the palace of memory.”IP: Logged |

I did, but that's because I was, well... spooked. I think the flannel was something more like a shirt, but I can't remember. I just recall looking up, and seeing a little girl there, trying to tell my sister. I hadn't thought of it as a possibly sweet gesture - I like that. IP: Logged |

One of the strangest and most meaningful-feeling dreams I’ve ever had, I also woke up when something unexpected happened involving a person above me on a staircase, except for me the person on the stairs was someone I knew in real life. I told him about it afterward, and he said that he had a dream where he was standing on a hillside looking down on a city like the one I described being in. This was a person I didn’t really know all that well, just in slightly overlapping social circles, but one of those people that you can tell just by looking in their eyes that they ‘get it’ — at least more than average, I mean. Unless you’re lucky enough to be constantly surrounded by positive, creative, conscious people. So yes, I think this could very well be a representation of someone you already have a strong connection to, and she wants to help you not be afraid of new and unusual perceptions. Not necessarily someone you have or will know in that body in the real world, I don’t know. Maybe if it happens again you can try acting like you just noticed a deer or a bird or something that you want to watch without startling into movement... I dunno, hope this helps!IP: Logged |

I had another dream this morning, involving us moving into a massive old house. As I walked into one room, when I was exploring with someone else, the room morphed into an entirely new layout. In another room, the woman with me was sitting on a couch - one of those that fits together with large squares of cushions - and there was a little girl on the couch next to her, a little girl with curly hair, that I reached out to touch, and then apologized for following that impulse. I asked the woman if she saw her, and she didn't - the girl then disappeared. IP: Logged |
