Religion and politics are two hot topics that have strong opinions on both sides. And there are other strong topics as well. Still, there is no reason both sides can't fully and openly express theirs without crossing the line and getting personal.

Do you think that Gore was the most viable option? (I'm asking b/c I really don't know how much of a chance Kerry and whats-his-face have...)
I've heard the idea tossed-around that he was asked not to run b/c sales on his book that just came out were/are abysmal (that being - in their opinion - a gauge of public interest in him, and his consequent ability to fund raise).
So, fundraising may've been his downfall, after all.

When it comes down to who's the more viable canidate, yes I think it was Gore. I think his main problem was that he coulnd't connect with people. I think as far as his game plan went, he was playing good but talking bad. Bush on the other hand talked in a way that suckered people into relating to him and they voted for him because of it. And the country's on the downward swoop right now for it. Really I can't relate to someone who got rich off oil. I'm living paycheck to paycheck. At least Gore's family is made up of working class stiffs. His mother was a school teacher wasn't she? As far as fundraising goes, there has been so much backlash from past fundraising scandals, who could raise the kind of money it would take to run a campaign for the next 2 years? I think if Gore had a chance he would run again and win. But I do believe that this decision is a combo of lack of funds, lack of energy to withstand another long campaign, and just wanting to sit back and relax and enjoy his golden years with his wife. Besides, who really wants to inherit this current mess. Everyones ****** at us. Instead of trying to come to some kinda compromise, Bush id deadset on alienating us from everyone in the world. I don't think the current canidates have what it takes to throw over Bush, not unless someone comes way outta left field with some exciting new ideas to hype everyone up.

...not unless someone comes way outta left field with some exciting new ideas to hype everyone up.

The problem being that even if someone like that did appear, unless there was (wonder of wonders) someone high up in the party machinery with enough vision and foresight to not dismiss him/her out of hand b/c they're looking for a "viable, middle of the road candidate" (read: "like just about every other politician out there, but with better hair, a few inches and/or a penchant for talking ad nauseum w/o actually saying anything"), they wouldn't get very far.

And THAT'S a large part of the reason the US public isn't all that geared-up to vote.

On that, do ya'll think that anyone actually worth the office'd be interested in running given the circumstances?

Thanks, Carlo!

I haven't reseached Kerry (or anyone else) at all, but just from his photograph I think he'd make a good pres. Reminds me of Kennedy somehow.

I hope that you're right about Kerry & Edwards;
I'd kill to have someone worth voting for

(and who actually has a chance of winning).

of all the things to riot over..foxhunting...i mean...what the hell? Fine, i cant imagine its nice for the fox but there really are more important issues to get fired up over.

How about something relatively important like the way we're simultaneously getting dragged into world war 3, turning into a police state and making it pointless to bother working since 50% of your cash goes the the govornment before you get a chance to buy anything.

*bangs fist on desk*

does go to show how rediculous things really are though, heh.

I guess it's easier to focus on stuff like that...I mean, then one can block-out the implications of the issues that you brought up.

On 2 different notes:
-(and to poke myself in the eye) The "right to foxhunt" thing really floored me; how many med-sized game animals are still left around the British Isles?
(I'm not asking that rhetorically - does anyone know?)

-Glad to see you didn't break your neck painting the hallway

Only in America......do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

For jwhop (and others; I just thought that jwhop, given his stance, might appreciate this the most):
http://slate.msn.com/id/2075659/

There are some good points made. I can't say that I completely agree w/ the thrust that the points support, but good points nonetheless.

Well proxieme, Christopher Hitchens is a little hard for some to understand---or even stand He has a habit of pitching irrational and illogical arguments into the garbage can.

Have to agree with Hitchens---mostly.

Christmas song

To the tune of "If You're Happy And You Know It Clap Your Hands"

If we cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets hurt your Mama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are Saudi
And the bank takes back your Audi
And the TV shows are bawdy,
Bomb Iraq.

If the corporate scandals growin', bomb Iraq.
And your ties to them are showin', bomb Iraq.
If the smoking gun ain't smokin'
We don't care, and we're not jokin'.
That Saddam will soon be croakin',
Bomb Iraq.

Even if we have no allies, bomb Iraq.
From the sand dunes to the valleys, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections;
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
Bomb Iraq.

While the globe is slowly warming, bomb Iraq.
Yay! the clouds of war are storming, bomb Iraq.
If the ozone hole is growing,
Some things we prefer not knowing.
(Though our ignorance is showing),
Bomb Iraq.

So here's one for dear old daddy, bomb Iraq,
From his favorite little laddy, bomb Iraq.
Saying no would look like treason.
It's the Hussein hunting season.
Even if we have no reason,
Bomb Iraq.

Merry Christmas
