Yep, Newt is a very sharp guy. When I listen to him talk about an issue, I quickly understand he not only know what's the right or wrong action to take but WHY it's the right..or wrong thing to do. He's one of the members of the dwindling "thinking" class...which is not to be confused with the political class. I suppose I wouldn't be so impressed with Newt if he had confined his activities to merely thinking. He's actually done the things he advocates...and they worked out well for America. He got the job done when he was Speaker of the House of Representatives and he got Republican control of the House...with some help from other Conservatives and the Contract With America. Nevertheless, I sent Newt an email...some time ago ripping him for sitting on a sofa with Nancy Pee-Lousy and touting global warming and a tax on fossil fuels...cap and tax. I admired that Newt was honest and when someone brought up the subject said...that was one of the most stupid things I've ever done. You realize Randall that the press hates Newt with the same passion they hated and still hate Ronald Reagan. Newt led the republican revolution that put the House of Representatives back under the control of Republicans after more than 40 years of demoscat control. Further, he engaged Clinton in a bidding war to balance the federal budget. Most don't know this and/or never heard of it but I remember it well. Newt said the federal budget must be balanced and kept saying it..over and over in every speech. Clinton had to react and said something like...I can balance the budget in 10 years. Newt said something like, I can balance the budget in 8 years. Clinton said, I can do it in 6 years. Newt said I can do it in 4 years. At the time, I thought hell, this sounds like the TV show...Name That Tune..where contestants are given some information about a song and then say...I can name that tune in 10 notes..or 6 notes or whatever and bid against each other. In the end, Newt and Clinton did get together and did balance the budget for 4 straight years. Most people have no idea what kind of an accomplishment that really was. For almost every American still living at the time, it was the first time in their lifetimes that the federal budget was balanced. The press despises the ground Newt walks on and so do some republicans who were little more than Republicans in name only. Newt was a hard charging guy who ruffled a lot of feathers in the republican establishment...on his way to getting the job done that was promised to get done. While some of those republicans went along with the Contract with America to get elected, they soon found out that Newt really believed in it and meant it when he said it was going to get done. The press also despise Newt for forcing Clinton into reforming Welfare...because Newt and Senate Republicans had the votes to override a Clinton veto. The demoscat mantra of the day was "Mend it, don't end it". When Newt walks into a room, he almost always is the smartest guy in the room. His main problem is that not everyone is thrilled to have Newt overshadow them intellectually. The other problem is that Newt doesn't suffer fools gladly and when he was Speaker, the press quickly found out what Newt thought about some of their asinine questions. Newt has mellowed some but some of the debate moderators found out that Newt still has a low tolerance for idiotic questions. Audiences gave Newt standing ovations for taking on the moderators. If Newt should happen to turn out to be the Republican nominee, O'Bomber would be wise to reject any debates. Of course, like most real thinkers, Newt has a Plan B. If O'Bomber rejects debates with Newt, Newt will follow O'Bomber around the country to every O'Bomber campaign stop AND within hours, blow up his every lie and every stupidity.

What is it that has been reported? For every gallon of gas the oil companies make between $0.02 - $0.07 per gallon profit - YET the government makes an average of $0.48 in taxes per gallon. When was the last time we heard "OMG.. the government is gouging the average American in gas tax"? Instead we hear of how well the oil companies are doing (but most media fails to recognize that other countries are included in the profits). http://www.ranchers.net/forum/about56990.html Highest per gallon taxes:
California: $0.67 per gallon (that is $0.60 more per gallon that the oil industry since the government PUTS almost nothing into drilling, refining or transporting oil but taxes at every step which only the last step is reported here). Illinois: $0.59 New York: $0.70 Hmmm..... who is actually getting all the money here?

it's going on everywhere. even here in cali where the refineries were making some difficulties and it went up for about a week. of course we are used to paying plenty for our gas here, compared to many.apparently the bottleneck on production has been opened up so there is plenty of supply. also they have to come down after every climb to appease people who are starting to be pump shy...before they go up again. this has been the MO for years, since i've lived in cali at least.
