quote:
One of the most serious misunderstandings in astrology concerns the interpretation of the twelfth house, particularly when the Sun and inner planets are in that sector. The work of the late Michel Gauquelin was illuminating on this subject. He found that planets rising or culminating were significant in relation to the choice of profession. "Rising," he found, meant just above the eastern horizon, and "culminating" referred to the position just past the Midheaven. In other words, the 12th and 9th houses were most important and not the first and tenth. Since his death this concept has been overlooked, and he is quoted as saying planets "on the angles." For Gauquelin the angles were 12th and 9th cusps and also 6th and 3rd, and not first, tenth, seventh and fourth.Dane Rudhyar once explained to me that the twelfth house is the one house that represents not just the unconscious, but the essential person who is not taking his identity from relationships or family, career or friends. He speculated that perhaps the negative interpretation of the 12th house came during the middle ages from the fact that being true to yourself and to your own beliefs could get you burned at the stake or imprisoned if you did not conform to church and state. In the 20th century the study of depth psychology brought a different attitude toward the contents of the unconscious. The first house is concerned with the appearance of the individual, his persona, whereas the twelfth is the real inner person not defined by family, relationships or career. If the first house and the twelfth are in conflict, then real pathology can be the result. One significant trait of the persons born with Sun in the 12th is that they are not easily influenced by other people and will stay committed to their own convictions. If early childhood experiences have squashed the person's self-confidence, he will usually withdraw inside himself and become introverted or shy.
It is noticeable in historical research how many remarkable people were born with Sun and planets in the twelfth house. Presently four of the most important political leaders on the world stage have 12th house Suns: George W. Bush, Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin and Ariel Sharon. Sharon was born with Sun in Pisces and retrograding Mercury nearby, and he is known as "the warrior" for his hawkish tendencies. He has Uranus conjunct Jupiter in Aries also in the 12th, which may explain why he does not display the accepted Piscean characteristics of compassion, empathy, sympathy and humanity. Nevertheless he is an example of a 12th house Sun.
Vladimir Putin was born with Sun conjunct Saturn in the peaceful sign of Libra and has a stellium in Libra including Mercury and Neptune, all in the 12th house. He acknowledges that he is "not a politician" but he is not a mild, meek man. He lists martial arts as his favorite sport and is a former KGB spy. Even before his appointment as prime minister in 1999 he was one of the most powerful men in the Kremlin during the time of Boris Yeltsin as President. Indeed he was personally chosen by Yeltsin as his successor. Putin has an out-of-bounds Moon in Gemini and Venus rising in the first house in Scorpio, but he is definitely his own man. Putin graduated from law school, indicated by Saturn in Libra conjunct the Sun, but then began a 15-year career with the KGB's foreign intelligence department, stationed in Leningrad and East Germany. In 1989 he resigned from the KGB and began his fast climb during the next decade. His quiet, self-effacing manner is typical of the 12th house approach, but he also has Pluto in Leo conjunct the South Node of the Moon exactly on the Midheaven of his chart. He came to public attention with his quick response in quashing the rebellion in Chechnya following the breakup of the Soviet Union. He became popular because he has taken a tough line, and he envisions a more modern, up-to-date Russia which can once more become a world power. Putin has an out-of-bounds Mars in Sagittarius trine his Pluto-South Node in Leo on the Midheaven. Both Putin and Bush were born with Sun and Saturn in the 12th house.
I heard several well known astrologers say before the last election that George Bush could not get elected because he had Sun and Saturn in Cancer in the 12th house. My response was "that is precisely why he will be elected!" The manner in which he came to the Presidency in a disputed election, and the "behind-the-scenes" manipulations that have caused many Americans to feel that he is not the real winner of that election, definitely reflect the power of that solar position. We have had several Presidents born with Sun in the 12th house, including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Jimmy Carter. Abraham Lincoln was born as the Sun rose, as recorded in his aunt's journal, and his balsamic Capricorn Moon was also in the 12th. Lincoln was a deeply reflective man, largely self educated, and his interest in the occult was well known in his lifetime. But the charm and personal power of the man was also marked at an early age.
The so-called odd couple of the international politics are George Bush and Britain's Tony Blair, both born with Sun in the 12th house. Two more different men would be hard to imagine: the articulate intellectual committed to finding "the middle way," and the right-wing fraternity boy, an oil man, with contempt for "ideas." Blair won Bush's friendship by his courage and loyalty, by standing "shoulder to shoulder" with America after September 11. Both men are devout Christians (though Blair is not fundamental in the way Bush is) and both are devoted family men who were disturbed by Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky. At Oxford Blair had embraced both Christianity and socialism and has been described as a man of "enormous moral fibre." He has sought a "middle way" in religion in his marriage to Cherie, a Catholic, while he is a practicing Anglican. He has used Jesus as his role model, and attends Catholic masses with his wife and two sons. Blair is the principal hope for reconciliation with the Arab world. A philosopher and student of religion, he knows that the Muslim and Christian traditions are from the same tradition. A 12th house Taurus Sun conjunct Pallas, he has an inner strength and commitment that can be trusted, while at the same time he has Gemini rising. Jupiter is on the Ascendant at 29 Taurus while Mars is conjunct at 3 degrees of Gemini. In my view the British Prime Minister is the most impressive of our current world leaders, all 12th house Suns.
Blair showed his special genius most notably at the time of Princess Diana's death. He knew and liked the Princess, and also knew and liked Prince Charles as a fellow modernist. Blair has described himself as being from "the Disraeli school of Prime Ministers" in relation to the monarchy. "You are our queen," he told Her Majesty, "and you are simply the best of British." He showed the British at the time of Diana's death that it was all right to express their emotions in public. He convinced the Queen to fly the flag at half-mast over Buckingham palace even though it was not in keeping with protocol. The man is a healer as well as innovator. He also agreed with the Queen that the Church of England should remain the country's established church, but an inclusive church. He calls himself a Christian socialist. This 12th house Taurus has demonstrated over and over the 12th house person's need to be true to himself and not to be influenced by others, while at the same time, as an ecumenical and liberal man, he must find a way to walk the middle road. He has Mars rising in Gemini, Moon in Aquarius on its own north node in the 9th house and Saturn conjunct Neptune in Libra on the cusp of the sixth.
Questions about whether the British were misled about the reasons for invading Iraq have plunged the Prime Minister's government into the worst crisis since he came to power six years ago. The British have always questioned the judgment and motives of President George W. Bush and his administration in rushing into this war. Will Blair be able to weather this storm and pursue "the middle road" as he has always done? Former President Bill Clinton has said he is grateful that Tony Blair is present to keep a restraining hand on Bush. The months ahead are critical for the Prime Minister.
The coming eclipse of the Full Moon in Taurus on November 8th, dubbed the Harmonic Concordance of 2003, will fall within a degree of Blair's natal Sun. Without a doubt this eclipse is of great significance not only for the world but also for the career of Tony Blair. It parallels not only his natal Sun but also his natal South Node in Leo. His natal Moon and North Node in Aquarius in the 9th house are contra parallel that lunar eclipse. We can only wait and see what the next two months will bring. It is worth noting that Uranus will station that day at 28 degrees Aquarius and turn direct right on Blair's natal tenth house cusp.
Bush too may be in for a stormy season as the US media and candidates for the Democratic Party nomination call into question his actions and policies. Neither Bush nor Blair, however, will be likely to change his views or behavior given their 12th house tendency to stay the course that is dictated by conviction, however controversial, unpopular or destructive.
(and also do you think if we did charts on all the political candidates running, we would have a possible conclusion of who would be occupying the oval office?)
