Gaping I stood
and shouted of happiness:
there is a party in the sky a party every night!
And then the sense of the great old secret
lit up in my mind,
the fairies of heaven, just like in a city,
go home at dawn
on the lamp-lit boulevards of eternity.

Until sunrise
I stood motionless gazing
then I said to myself:
what were you seeking
on this earth, what old wives’ tales
what tarts were keeping you captive,
for what scribbling were you so active,
that so many summers and winters passed by
and so many a slovenly night
without noticing the party in the sky?

~Dezső Kosztolányi

Maybe he means the whole world is having a party in a heavenly manner. Because the sky is still a part of this world, isn't it?

Be the Earth

My heart and my eyes
are filled with love.
My tongue speaks of the Beloved
while my face is wet with tears.

My body burns like frankincense and myrrh.
My smoke rises into the skies on the morning breeze.
Armor and shields cannot resist the fire of love.
Its arrow pierces the soul - it is very sharp.

Your love is an ocean and I am a little fish.
If a fish comes out of the water, doesn't she die right away?
My king makes me read what He says, in my own language:
"Come to Me this instant!"

Those who love You,
can they ever have a brain?
Even if they're sane for one moment,
the next moment they're insane.

Yunus, be the earth
on the path of the attained.
The station of the attained
is higher than the highest heaven.

Someone I am acquainted with has published recently a book with translations of poems by Yunus. I took it from there.

Sometimes a crumb falls
From the tables of joy,
Sometimes a bone
Is flung.

To some people
Love is given,
To others
Only heaven.

When peoples care for you and cry for you, they can straighten out your soul.

Like a welcome summer rain, humor may suddenly cleanse and cool the earth, the air and you.

For poems are like rainbows; they escape you quickly.

But I think happiness springs from another source, a far deeper one that doesn't depend on will because it comes from love.

(music) Show Me The Place (Leonard Cohen, lyrics/poem) [4:10] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCtoVoE5Mm4

Slave... It has a mystical meaning, the whole thing. Even though it can be taken as a naughty-physical too, for those so inclined.

That's what I really love about his work. He's Zen... So deep, yet so raw (as to be almost perverse for some) at the same time! Words have multiple meanings.

In this case, I glean the Higher.

SHOW ME THE PLACE

Show me the place, where you want your slave to go
Show me the place, I've forgotten I don't know
Show me the place where my head is bend and low
Show me the place, where you want your slave to go

Show me the place, help me roll away the stone
Show me the place, I can't move this thing alone
Show me the place where the word became a man
Show me the place where the suffering began

The troubles came I saved what I could save
A shred of light, a particle a wave
But there were chains so I hastened to the hay
There were chains, a lot of chains
Like a spade

Show me the place, where you want your slave to go
Show me the place, I've forgotten I don't know
Show me the place where my head is bent and low
Show me the place, where you want your slave to go

The troubles came I saved what I could save
A shred of light, a particle a wave
But there were chains so I hastened to the hay
There were chains so I loved you like a slave

Show me the place
Show me the place
Show me the place

Show me the place, help me roll away the stone
Show me the place, I can't move this thing alone
Show me the place where the word became a man
Show me the place where the suffering began

And I'm reading some L. Cohen now

AS THE MIST LEAVES NO SCAR

As the mist leaves no scar
On the dark green hill,
So my body leaves no scar
On you, nor ever will.

When wind and hawk encounter,
What remains to keep?
So you and I encounter,
Then turn, then fall to sleep.

As many nights endure
Without a moon or star,
So will we endure
When one is gone and far.

The River

A thousand faces flow past me,
A thousand voices clamoring to be heard:
The stories of my life:
beloved, abandoned,
hated, feared.
Which mask shall I wear in this moment?
Which voice shall I claim as my own
in this moment?
In this moment
I am a river.
I am the watcher of the river.
Grabbing no mask
They are all my own.
Choosing no voice
I see them all
flowing through me
endlessly changing.

When we love each other we are immortal and indestructible like the heartbeat and the rain

*

The music enchanted the air. It was like the south wind, like a warm night, like swelling sails beneath the stars, completely and utterly unreal... It made everything spacious and colorful, the dark stream of life seemed pulsing in it; there were no burdens any more, no limits; there existed only glory and melody and love, so that one simply could not realize that, at the same time as this music was, outside there ruled poverty and torment and despair.

*

I’ll tell you the story of the wave and the rock. It’s an old story. Older than we are. Listen. Once upon a time there was a wave who loved a rock in the sea, let us say in the Bay of Capri. The wave foamed and swirled around the rock, she kissed him day and night, she embraced him with her white arms, she sighed and wept and besought him to come to her. She loved him and stormed about him and in that way slowly undermined him, and one day he yielded, completely undermined, and sank into her arms.”
“And suddenly he was no longer a rock to be played with, to be loved, to be dreamed of. He was only a block of stone at the bottom of the sea, drowned in her. The wave felt disappointed and deceived and looked for another rock
“What does that mean? He should have remained a rock.”
“The wave always says that. But things that move are stronger than immovable things. Water is stronger than rocks.
~Erich Maria Remarque

Our Jeopardy

It is good to use best china
treasured dishes
the most gentle goblets
the oldest lace tablecloth
there is a risk of course
every time we use anything
or anyone shares an inmost
mood or comment
or a fragile cup of revelation
but not to touch
not to handle
not to employ the available
artifacts of being
a human being
that is a quiet crash
the deadly catastrophe

where nothing is enjoyed or broken
or spoken or spilled
or stained or mended
where nothing is ever
lived
loved
pored over
laughed over
wept over
lost
or found.
~Thomas John Carlisle
