Ribbons

Ribbons of smoke rising
seen through slitted eyes
splitting soundlessly, tearing seamlessly
their gray-silver transparence
incense ghosts lines wandering heavenward
folding in and out
mobius strips revolving
around the whimsy of space and time
making their own paths
away from my steps
into my quiet breaths

I didn't find 'mobius' in the dictionary, but otherwise it has a hypnotic vibe into it.

Thank you Kannon, I am reading about it. And I see Mobius was a person...

Love it! Nice image. I like how you ended it.

Smoking? .. or meditating quietly with incense?

Thanks for sharing!

Next time I'm at my metaphysical shop, I'll go sniff the Jasmine incense sticks so I get the full sensory-effects here.

Maybe!.. I'll even get a stick, and burn it WHILE I read your poem??

Why do you use Jasmine?

My choice of incense is based on either an intuitive feel for which one resonates, or I will literally do a muscle response test of those in my collection (Gonsesh #6, Jasmine, Dragon's Blood, Sandalwood, etc). When I did that recently Jasmine was the strongest.

Jasmine, Sandalwood, and Gonesh #6 are the ones that most often benefit me. #6 is a blend of Jasmine and Sandalwood.

There's a noticeable difference with the incense that works for you. It will help you enter an altered state of focus a lot more easily. Both Jasmine and Sandalwood are very sweet, soothing.

Now Frankincense is really good for people who have trouble focusing. So if you a bit ADD/hyper, try it.

Thanks for the 'wows' Randall

It's been ages since I tried Sandalwood.
Sandalwood and Jasmine-- I'll give them a sniff! Thanks.

A Poem About Walking Meditation

Walking ever so slowly
like sneaking up on the future
like sneaking up on peace
like sneaking up on myself.

How slow can I go?
as slow as my breathing does
This is how I slow down the time I cannot waste on mania, neurosis, fear.

Sneaking up on the future
sneaking up on peace
sneaking up on the self I don't yet know I am.

Interesting. Can you steal time? Or have a glimpse from what is to be?

I meditate because ...
the more I meditate the happier I am
I meditate because it creates peace
which creates more happiness
which creates more love.
All that from just sitting.
All that from just walking.
All this from doing nothing.

I always felt doing nothing is just as important as doing something... That
you need the void in order to have meaning for what is there.

This thread is for anyone else too. I'd like to read what you write. Doesn't have to be anything fancy or elaborate, just thoughts inspired by spiritual moments or feelings.

The nature of walking is so self-reflective, this is beautiful.

* Not mine, but lovely for here I suppose

How I go to the woods

Ordinarily, I go to the woods alone, with not a single
friend, for they are all smilers and talkers and therefore
unsuitable.

I don’t really want to be witnessed talking to the catbirds
or hugging the old black oak tree. I have my way of
praying, as you no doubt have yours.

Besides, when I am alone I can become invisible. I can sit
on the top of a dune as motionless as an uprise of weeds,
until the foxes run by unconcerned. I can hear the almost
unhearable sound of the roses singing.

If you have ever gone to the woods with me, I must love
you very much.

Drunken Monkeys*

Nine drunken monkeys showed up for class
learned and literate, they chattered about
all the ambitions and insights they had.
They had one job: count to nine while
walking calmly, quietly,
but they chattered on about all they'd learned;
chattering at each other,
at the walls,
at the air,
doodling pictures and pointing,
grasping at straws for sucking at the air,
for blowing paper thought darts at teacher.
I patiently persist day after day.
For all the learning and ideas are useless
if consciousness remains uncoordinated.

---

* "Drunken monkeys" is a term used in Zen to described the chattering of the deliberative mind and its thought streams.
