Like driftwood, Uncle Tio’s toes & heels wash up on shore and hobble up the pass. At the top, amidst aloe, he summons the rainbow. Later, he in his bedroom slippers (the only things that could contain those gnarled stumps) And I, swollen-eyed, purposely not having looked in a mirror in three or four days, he says: Baibeh, I teach youto disappear.

This is an old one; not sure why it popped into my head this morning. IP: Logged |

Okay, backstory: ‘Uncle Tio’ (yes, now I’m aware of the joke— Tio means uncle... I’m sure that wasn’t his real name) was a Native American WWII veteran I met when I was a teenage vagabond in Hawaii. He wasn’t homeless, but spent the vast majority of his time in this one particular park — every afternoon he would go to the grocery store across the street, buy a couple of loaves of bread and packages of bologna and cheese and whatnot, and sit at a picnic table offering sandwiches and conversation to anyone who happened by. He was always saying he was going to call up a rainbow; usually nothing happened and he’d just shrug and smile and say “Maybe next time.” Same with the disappearing thing... he said it quite a few times, but never overtly taught me any such thing. He also talked a lot about how he was planning a trip to the mainland to see his daughter. But then one day, when nobody else was around, he turned to me and said, “You know, I’m going home to die.” He was looking forward to it so much— the way he described how he would be welcomed, and washed, and given a place to lay with his bed facing the East... that right there just almost blew my mind. I’d always been a little terrified of the whole idea of growing old; my own grandparents had all lingered rather miserably in hospitals, so to be shown this other way... that’s a lesson I will always be grateful for.IP: Logged |

Yes, the best story I have ever heard about dying. It almost sounds like fun. Like an adventure. (Check "Peter Pan" on that one.)IP: Logged |
