This could almost be read with a spiritual connotation to it also.  Gives the lyrics more ways to be interpreted. Nice when songs can do that. For example, Leonard Cohen wrote 'Hallelujah'.
Can almost express a sexual encounter, or, his ruminating about events in his life, while he was always in pursuit of intimacy with God.
