Just wondering what does it take to create a new set of Tarot cards? I've seen so many tarot decks around, there was even a set created by CLEO magazine some time back! So far I like the Rider-Waite deck the best even though I hold another kind..

Like to make your own? Well you'd have to be artistic in one way or another whether its something by hand or creating images on the computer. You'd have to understand the basic structure of the tarot...major arcana and minor arcana. You also need to be well studied on the symbolism of each card so that you can inturpret that symbolism in your own artistic style. Its nice to have a theme too. Most tarot decks being made today follow the basic structure of the rider waite deck. However Ive noticed a lot more people are starting to study the Marsielles also.

Hey miss_apples,

perhaps we should direct Fishtail to another website that we both know and love????
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/

Fishtail, at this website you will be able to see reviews of existing Tarot and Oracle decks (including three that have been created by that forum's members ). This might help you to understand what's involved in making your own.

cheers

In my opinion, you could use any deck with a variety of meanings and answers etc. the power of tarot isn't really in the cards it's in your intuition. Thats if you were planning on making a deck without ever owning one. However it would be extremely helpful to find reliable definitions or answers to base the cards off if you don't know much about how the whole system works

Thats very true tracy about it being your intuition and not the cards. However if you make a random set of cards without following the tarot structure in one way or another then its not a tarot deck. However it would be a just as efficient Oracle deck.

Yes I realized that after I posted. I kind of whipped through when I was reading as I always do when I have something to say or spiral on..im a chronic interupter of myself. I had just thought about it because I grew up poor and when I got interested in tarot I first bought the book assuming I would verse myself on the definitions while I saved up for a deck and while reading I realized what I had said in this post and began to practice my intuitive ability using a regular deck of playing cards.

I purchased a deck of blank cards from a metaphysical shop and created a deck with just words that I thought were significant.First I counted the cards and on a piece of paper I selected what I considered to be a good balance of words. I used typical words like faith, joy, properity but then added words like employment, associate, art, disconnected and other words I have not found in other decks. I actually find that I use my deck more frequently than the tarot.
If you want to be visually creative you could even cut out pictures from magazines, etc.
