There's a 3 hour seminar that cuts into my work shift and I would rather have to come in late or switch the shift. So I asked if the seminar would be beneficial to me to determine if I should go.

Maybe a long term benefit?

Definitely beneficial in the long run, financially too. It will take some time though, before you reap the results.
