I think most of it points to the secret code and message that allows access to a variety of historic and esoteric mysteries. Et en arcadia ego...And in arcadia I. Understanding that message is supposed to be the key that opens the doors of Knowledge, time, etc. At least, that is the way I understand it. I always found the story very intriguing.
