SUPERSTITIONS SURROUND BLACK CATS AROUND THE WORLD Elegant and graceful, the cat has mystified and delighted people for centuries. Ancient people worshipped Cats and Gods and considered them good luck charms, particularly if they wear black. English sailors purchased black cats for their wives with the belief that if the cat were comfortable, the weather would be good. In Japan, black cats were thought to cure disease, while in Scandinavia, black kittens were given as wedding presents as a symbol of good luck and happy union. The well known British saying, states that, "Whenever the cat of the house is black, lasses and lovers shall have no lack." When a black cat crosses your path in Britain, it predicts good fortune. In America, the superstition calls for bad luck. One of the earliest associations of black cats with evil comes from ancient Babylonian and Hebrew mythologies. These myths likened the black cat coiled peacefully in a circle to a serpent, which symbolized evil. During the Middle Ages, the black cat was implicated in many beliefs and superstitions. The Germans believed that if a black cat jumped on the bed of a sick person, it meant death was approaching. One Bengali folktale told that some women had the power to change their souls into black cats and that any harm brought to the cat would be suffered by the women. The Celts thought black cats were reincarnated beings that were able to divine the future. And the druids of ancient Britain believed that humans who performed evil acts would be reincarnated as black cats as a punishment. ~by Marisssa J. Miller, Marin Humane Society, (from the Marin Independant Journal)ALL HALLOWS EVE The word Halloween is derived from "All Hallows Eve", which occurs on November 1. It is an important date on the Catholic calendar, a day or time to observe and honor saints. People believed that the souls of the dead come back to earth to visit their friends and family. Some say the veil between the spirit world and the physical world is thinest on this night. In the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. This was called Samhain (pronounced sow-en). In the Wiccan religion, many Witches consider the day as beginning at sundown and ending at sundown the following day. On October 31, "November Eve", "Samhain", the night lengthens and Wiccans work with the positive aspects of darkness in the increasing star and moonlight. Many Craft traditions following the ancient Celts, consider this the eve of the New Year (as the day begins with sundown, so the year begins with the first day of Winter). Focus is within, to "look through the glass darkly", to develope divination and psychic skills. WIZARD OF OZ QUESTION When the Wicked Witch put a spell on Dorothy and gang while on their way to Oz, in the field of poppies, why did only Dorothy and the Lion fall asleep? Because the Tin man and Scarecrow are inanimate non-breathing characters. The Lion and Dorothy breathe air. THE ORIGIN OF JACK O'LANTERN An Irish tale tells us where the origins of the name Jack o'lantern came from. There once was a man named Jack who liked to play tricks on people. He lived a long, mischievous life. One day he tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved the image of a Holy Cross in the trunk of the tree. This trapped the Devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the Devil that: he would let the Devil down the tree, if the Devil promised to never tempt him again. After Jack died, he was not permitted into Heaven because of his evil ways. He was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the Devil. The devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the freezing blackness. This flame was put inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing. As Jack walked his neverending journey as punishment for his trickery, he carried a burning coal inside a turnip to help him see along the roads everywhere he traveled. Soon he was known as "Jack of the lantern" or Jack O'Lantern. In Ireland, turnips were used as their Jack's lanterns originally. However, immigrants to America, found pumpkins more plentiful than turnips. The Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember. You're welcome for the bump. We have yet to put the rest of the decorations up ~ it keeps raining, and we had visitors from out of town for a while there. I don't have any parties to attend (though I wouldn't mind maybe visiting one for a little while). A friend of my mother's is holding a seance on October 28th, I think, at her store, "The Healing Bridges." I'm not sure whether or not I'm going yet ~ we'll see. We missed a Harvest Festival 'do' this past weekend, unfortunately. Things (moods) feel a little heavier this year, so it will probably be pretty quiet. I hope the weather warms up for the kids and their trick-or-treating, though. Do you have anything planned Nephthys?

Hi Teasel ~ Well this weekend I will carve a pumpkin which I grew in the garden. I decorated our house pretty cute ~ I'll take a pic with my dog in it and post it in the next few days or this weekend. I love Halloween and I wish I was invited to a great Halloween party or something. Oh well, maybe someday. ~N. IP: Logged |
