In a hurry to get to an appointment late this afternoon, I stopped for gas at a large convenience store in a small town near where I live. When the tank was nearly full, I noticed an old dog lumbering through the lot. And by old, I mean at least 14-15. A sweet face with lots of grey hair around his big brown eyes, but he looked a little worn, wet with some mud on his fur (it was a rainy day). A little arthritic, too, with a hip that was obviously somewhat stiff. And he was a little stinky. Because of his age, I can't imagine he was terribly far from home, nor that he's been gone for too long. Despite the mild temperatures, it's still winter, and for an aged dog, still difficult. The old guy seemed to know what he wanted. He stopped by me, sniffed in my car while the passenger door was open, and promptly rejected me. There was a sort of cadence to his wandering. He let another patron pet him, then wandered off again. I didn't know what to do. My cell phone was dead, so I couldn't call for help (though the nearest shelter was 20 miles away). So with great guilt I left for my appointment, vowing to return afterwards and check on him. Two hours later he was gone. I asked in the store, and she thought the police had taken him. So hopefully he has a belly full of food, a hot bath, and a warm place to sleep tonight. Perhaps he's even home with his family. I just wanted to offer this up to the Universe and ask for a Blessing for the Old One, that he be safe and warm and cared for. IP: Logged |

Oh Trillian, bless you What a beautiful gesture. Indeed my visit to Heathcliffe's Corner today has been an emotional one. I received strong mental imagery from you story which moved me deeply (darn that Picses Ascendant!) So yes ~ A Blessing for the Old One may his journey be painless Sometimes I can't take the emotion I get from these stories!! IP: Logged |

Let's hope that he is okay, and that he is in a warm, safe place. Maybe you could swing by there again soon, just to see if he's around? Angels, please protect our old friend, wherever he may be. Thank you IP: Logged |

Ahhhh, Francesco...would that be St. Francis, Tink?Thank you for all your wonderful thoughts for the Old One. Your compassion helped--he is at least in a warm safe place, being cared for. He was taken to the Humane Society (where I have some human friends), where he is in the infirmary. They call him "Fella," estimate his age at 13, and are watching him to see if he is well enough for adoption. I'll check on him again next week. While I hope that he finds a loving home to spend the rest of his days...if he is ill or in pain I will wish him well on his spirit journey. Thank you again. Your love can work miracles. I'm so grateful he is warm and fed and safe. While Humane Societies have a long way to go to truly become humane...in this case, it is better than having him on the streets. There are no no-kill facilities in this area, and unfortunately, I cannot take him myself. IP: Logged |
