What will become of the Famous San Diego Zoo and it's animals if the raging fires continue? Will they be able to evacuate these animals? These things came across my mind while admiring this little girl in the picture below: AP - Fri Oct 19, 6:03 PM ET This photo provided by the Zoological Society of San Diego shows a female New Guinea singing dog named Samber vocalizes in her new home Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at the San Diego Zoo. She and a male singing dog are recent additions to the Zoo. These dogs possess unique vocalization characteristics that separate them from other canines. They do not bark repetitively and get their name from complex vocal behavior including yelps and howls. (AP Photo/Zoological Society of San Diego, Ken Bohn) The San Diego Zoo has 4000+ animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, and a botanical collection of 700000 exotic plants... Edited to add: Fire Updates As of 3:45 p.m. October 22, the San Diego Zoo has not been directly impacted by the fires sweeping through San Diego County, but animal care staff will continue to monitor the situation and make modifications to ensure animal health and safety as necessary. ------------------ Sendin' love your way, "your friend in spirit"

Nephthys, is very correct! So many animals not part of the zoo's inhabitants running round frightened, scared, and losing thier homes -perhaps thier lives! My friend who is local to the area has informed me that several of his neighbors are missing thier domesticated animals as well... This is a terribly sad and surreal situation. San Diego Zoo Update: As of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, the Wild Animal Park has started assessment and clean up efforts from the fire and wind damage. Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire. More than 600 acres surrounding the Wild Animal Park were burned. These were open buffer zone areas and not exhibit space. The California condors and other endangered bird species, as well as other mammals, have been returned to their homes while others are in the process of being moved. The rest of the animals remain safe, secure, and have weathered the firestorm well. The Wild Animal Park did lose one of the empty condor breeding facilities to the fire as well as a storage facility containing Festival of Lights event materials. Winds have damaged trees throughout the Park, but again the animals and exhibits have weathered the storm. A core group of employees is on hand to care for the wildlife. Other employees and some contractors are currently assisting with clean up and restoration efforts. -updates continuing until the fires have been fully contained. IP: Logged |

Keeping all LIVES in my thoughts!! Jovette, the smokey air is one of my concerns as well. When the wildfires where going on here last year, many, many miles away from us, the smoke was carried by the wind into Anchorage and the valley area (where i am) it was horrible. We were cautioned to remain indoors and wear masks when going outside, and if we must go outside not to exhaust ourselves. I can only imagine all the animals running round scared and what the smoke is doing to them physically, let alone the animals in the zoo who can not escape the smoke.

Here is recent audio regarding the wild life parkAnd then a great park update Excerpt: " It amazes me hearing the stories of the Park’s employees. So many of them did not know if their homes were still standing. Their homes were directly in the path of the fire, many had been evacuated themselves, and still they stayed for hours fighting to keep the animals safe. " Click here to read more... (Seems the zoo has reopened) ------------------
