The Animal of the Month for June is the Plesiosaur. The Plesiosaur is an ancient marine reptile from the Mesozoic Era. The Mesozoic Era consisted of the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic Periods, from 66 - 251 million years ago. Modern marine reptiles are descendants of the Plesiosaur. The Plesiosaur's body had a long, heavy, durable skeleton, about 7 meters long in length, with limbs that were modified into paddles to act like oars or hydrofoils to propel the animal forward in water. They were highly specialized for an aquatic life. The Plesiosaur is the only animal known who could literally "fly" through water. Please watch this animation of a Plesiosaur using his broad, flat limbs to fly through water. (Although the animal in this video has a short cervical vertebrae (neck), the main focus is to show how the paddle shaped fins work in the water.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZQlrxeTpQo&feature=related This video shows different artists' interpretations of what they thought the Plesiosaur might have looked like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkEFKpz98mU Hope you enjoyed this months' Animal of the Month and please post your thoughts and interests! Thank you. IP: Logged |

.WOW! Yes, this is pretty cool... There is much controversy regarding whether or not this thing really is extinct however, around many parts of the world there seem to be sightings of sorts of something hauntingly familiar to this creature. Hmmm??? Please peek here to see where I'm going with this Is it possible these could be one in the same? Generations continued and perhaps evolved a bit...

I didn't even have to click on the link to know you are referring to Nessie. Yes, I totally believe that Nessie is a Pleisiosaur. There are no modern skeletal remains of Plesiosaurs nor evidence of physical living specimens so it is considered extinct by those factors. Too bad Nessie is so shy.....maybe someday we can coax her out. Although, perhaps she is just being smart and staying safe out of the possibility of ever being caught by man and being "kept"??? P.S. Nessie Rules!!! IP: Logged |
