Kipper was my dog...a beautiful golden Labrador Retriever who died more than a year ago. I remember one specific incident with him. I was walking him and Kristy, my black Lab, when suddenly she broke free. There I was trying to leash her again when Kipper saw a dead bird, half decayed and decided to do some buffet sampling, having no idea how ill it could make him. I was holding onto Kristy's collar with both hands. He took the bird in his mouth and to make him spit it out, I... kicked him. What I had tried to do was to hoist him up by hooking my foot under his stomach but I only ended up kicking him. He did spit the bird out...but he was scared to come near me. It took me a while to call him to me. I tried to put in my touch all I couldn't explain to him. But even today, this memory haunts me and I can't throw away the guilt of hurting him, no matter how I try to phrase it to myself.
We should never hurt someone we love, because when they are gone, it is the hurts that we gave them that drown us in guilt.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to feel guilty about one incident that was an accident.....Sounds like all the other times were filled with Love.

Well, I remember the good times together....it's only when I'm under the blue, so as to say, I take everything from the inside and beat myself up with it... And they talk of a Day of Judgement...it seems we judge ourselves the harsh-est at times like these...
Sorry Dee...just pretty senti-mental today...

I am sure it scared him for the time being but you should not feel guilty because it was not something you did out of anger but out of fear. You were looking out for him getting severely ill and I doubt the kick was forceful enough to cause anything but surprise and a bit of confusion.Ceasar Milan, in one of his books, talks about how dogs are able to quickly move on and past some of the terrible things that have happened to them. Please keep that in mind. You did not hurt your furbaby with malice, you used to force to keep him from a potential threat. I am sure Kipper's love for you didn't change a bit. Sorry you had to go through that. IP: Logged |
