I am such a sucker. My Scorpio found some more caterpillars on my rosemary. They've decimated the mint and ate a lot of the basil. They are bigger than they were when they showed up a couple weeks ago. I can't kill them because they are too cute and they will turn into something with wings. So they are in a jar eating organic lettuce. They've been in there the past week and they are getting fat fat fat. And for the record... They poop. They poop a LOT. IP: Logged |

LOL! I love caterpillars. They are so soft and fuzzy. One of the few exceptions to my insect phobia. (Monarch butterfly baby) So cute and fat. How can you be mad at something whose sole mission is to eat? IP: Logged |

Those are NEAT!Mine are just green inch worm types. I think they'll probably be moths at some point. But it is kind of cute the way they move around. IP: Logged |

How are they doing?------------------ "The stars which shone over Babylon and the stable in Bethlehem still shine as brightly over the Empire State Building and your front yard today. Well, they are all acting strangely. They ate like monsters for a while and got fat. Now They've turned a sort of translucent color. They aren't green anymore but more of a whitish color. They are lethargic. I keep thinking they are going to cocoon and a couple of them have spun some stuff loosely around them but some of them just lay there.I hope I haven't done anything wrong. You could take them to the vet. You'd be surprised what vets know about just about anything. I used to work in a vet's office and we'd get baby birds, racoons, a praying mantis, etc. They are probably fine. I'm assuming lethargy is preparation for their immiment metamorphosis. All of the action is happening inside. Here is some info on Monarch caterpillar behavior that might be helpful: http://www.livemonarch.com/advanced.htm It sounds like they might get a little chilled out/stop eating right before they molt, and they molt multiple times. Edit: The other issue might be bacterial or parasitic infection but it doesn't sound like it because they haven't turned brown, they got white. Keep reading for more info. This is what I Googled to start with: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&expIds=17259,17315,23628,23670,25041,26761,26849,27617,28023&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=caterpillar+not+eating&cp=17&pf=p&sclient=psy&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=cate rpillar+not+ea&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=c341562a61b59af3 IP: Logged |

Than you so much Star!!! But... Seems I don't have to read your links after all. The are definitely all cocooned up now! The turned almost white, became lethargic, and when I looked at them today, the ones that aren't wrapped up in leaves, are like whitish ovals. Cant see their little caterpillar legs anymore. Strange and sort of neat IP: Logged |

Btw, they did molt during their cocooning. There are empty little caterpillar heads on the bottom of the cage.IP: Logged |

BTW, I have a special affinity with butterflies that I will explain later today. It's very sad but with a happy ending.------------------ "The stars which shone over Babylon and the stable in Bethlehem still shine as brightly over the Empire State Building and your front yard today. Well, I had less than a happy childhood--not horrid, but not particularly pleasant. My mom tried, and my dad was not much of one, but my grandfather was amazing. He made up for everything else. He and I had a love for butterflies. I wish he had been able to see the butterfly exhibit at Calloway Gardens nearby. Anyway, when he died, it took my life in a tailspin. It ripped my heart to shreds. I couldn't break free from the sadness. Then one day (like two weeks later) at the mall in the parking lot (with no plantlife anywhere around) a beautiful colorful butterfly landed on my hand. It was stunning. I moved my hand by instinct, but it didn't fly away. It seemed to look up at me as it flapped its wings slowly. I had a rush of peace and happiness fill me from head to toe, because in that instant I knew that this was a sign from my grandfather that not only is he still around (death is not the end), but that he is also watching over me...and I knew everything would be okay, which is what he wanted to let me know. ------------------ "The stars which shone over Babylon and the stable in Bethlehem still shine as brightly over the Empire State Building and your front yard today. One of them 'hatched' last night! I let him go before taking a picture but I am anticipating one or two more to hatch some time this weekend since most of them cocooned at around the same time. I'll take pictures of them!IP: Logged |

Oh! Yes I need to post pics. I put pics on my Facebook but it's been too crazy to upload them to my webspace to post here. I will do it this weekend though . I'll have the chance to get on the computer (as opposed to an iPad) then.IP: Logged |
