There's a story behind it, Dee. It's heartbreaking. But I don't want to take away from Charmaine's loss. Teasel, at least you have some extra time with Bertie. Make the most of it and give extra helpings of love.

I used to be mad at the birds waking me up in the morning. Then, one afternoon, I found a baby finch on my doorstep and barely rescued it from a lurking neighbor cat, and I tried to raise it. I named it Baby. I fed baby constantly and changed out the towel in Baby's Payless shoebox home frequently (Baby slept standing up and pooped all the time). I only slept a little the next couple of days, because I had to feed Baby constantly. In the middle of the night, Baby woke me by letting out one loud goodbye chirp, falling over, and dying. I guess Baby had a weak heart, so the mother bird kicked Baby out of the nest. Nature can be so cruel. It has been said by legend that animals have one Oversoul per species, but being loved by a human grants that animal an individual Soul. I don't know if it's true or not, but at least I gave Baby a little more time on Earth. Yes, I longed for the day that Baby would be set free and fly away, but that day never came. I cried for days. I loved that bird. I had a funeral after an hour of sobbing, and then I wrote that poem. And every morning, I would hear Baby's brothers and sisters singing at dawn, and I wasn't mad to be awakened anymore.

Bertie died on January 19th. I mentioned it elsewhere around that time. He died on the bathroom floor, when I was sick and could barely move due to the added back problem that had hit me days before, so he was alone when he died - so many feet away from me, but alone.

I was trying to make the most of it, when certain things were going on last November/December/January - when I was in a bad state emotionally, and coming to the computer to try to cheer up a bit and chill out, so that I wouldn't affect him negatively (or hurt myself due to my extreme depression), and why I was so angry that anyone would just add to that, and take away this place from me, and most people I liked from here.

Great, now I'm crying again.

I also lost my cat Teddy, suddenly, last June. I miss them both.

I remember you lost a pet. I thought this was a different one.

Anyway, as I said, I'm sorry for your loss. I keep thinking that I still see Bertie around. Hobbling out to see him and pet him one last time, that night when he was buried... cupping his face, and seeing that little heart shape on his forehead for the last time. He looked like he was just sleeping, wrapped up in the blanket, until I touched him.
