Pitch is paralyzed. We aren't sure exactly what happened to him. He was found at my work on 5/21. He was emaciated, filthy and unable to use his hind legs. But he sure was feisty.
I took him home, cleaned him up and fed him. Took him to the vet the following day and was prepared to be told he needed to be put to sleep. To my surprise the vet said that paralyzed cats can live good lives with the right owner, and she encouraged me to give him a chance.
We started him on prednisone and a dewormer immediately. About a week later we found out that he had an abscess over his spine. It ruptured. We took him to the vet again. They cleaned it out and started him on an antibiotic. They also showed me how to express his bowels and bladder.
The antibiotic cleared the infection up and he started to chunk up. Unfortunately, almost 2 weeks later his abscess returned. That was today (6/10).
We decided to do xrays to see if we could determine the cause. He has several shards of broken bone (see provided xray image) in his spine. One of them sticks straight up, and it appears to be what is causing the infection and resulting abscess. The surgery to remove the bone shards from his back is estimated to be around $1300.
If we cannot raise the money to get it done, he will be put to sleep. We do not want him to suffer just because we can't afford the surgery. The vet says that if we do not remove the bone shards, his infection will be recurring and he will never fully heal. He has worked his way into my heart and I do not want to lose him.
Pitch is being treated by the lovely vets at Goodyear Animal Hospital. They should provide me with a detailed, more accurate estimate via email tomorrow afternoon. They are located in Goodyear, AZ. http://www.goodyearah.com/index.php
