Lacy, a two-year-old German shepherd mix, has held up remarkably well for months at the busy Manhattan's facility of the New York City Animal Care and Control; she was seized as part of a cruelty investigation in July. How any dog can keep their sanity in a disruptive and unnatural setting such as an animal shelter where everyday strange dogs and people walk in and out is an achievement all to itself. And there sits Lacy. (A1007255)
According to Lacy's chart, she had previously been living in a crate; her barking alerted personnel from the apartment building where she had been kept.
Lacy's original assessment in July showed some "aggression" by barking, growling and charging at the leash when personnel tried to get her out of her kennel cage. That behavior subsided when she was freed of the cage, and then she became friendly, and playful. Notes were made that Lacy showed 'resource guarding' during her food and rawhide test.
In September, Lacy's assessment showed the following:
"Lacy approached the assessor with a soft body and wagging tail and then proceeded to lean into the assessor. She was a little active and difficult to position during the handling items of the assessment; however she maintained soft body language. Lacy growled and grabbed the leash during the tag item; however she maintained playful body language and she readily dropped the leash at the sound of a squeaker..."
Again, it was noted that Lacy still maintains concerning behaviors during food, rawhide and toy items. She continues to be categorized as New Hope rescue only.
On Wednesday, Lacy's last play period may have come and gone:
"TO BE DESTROYED - 11/13/14
Manhattan Center My name is LACY. My Animal ID # is A1007255.
I am a female brown and black germ shepherd mix. The shelter thinks I am about 2 YEARS old.
*** HELPER DOG *** LEGAL HOLD FOR POSSIBLE CRUELTY OR NEGLECT *** LEGAL HOLD RELEASED 11/06/14***RESCUE ONLY***I came in the shelter as a SEIZED on 07/18/2014 from NY 10473, owner surrender reason stated was CRUELTY."
Still a favorite of the staff and volunteers, Lacy doesn't belong in a cage. This is a dog who has been treated cruelly in the past, but still loves familiar faces. A volunteer who has met Lacy writes this:
"Lacy has long been a favorite of staff members here at the care center, and once you get to know her, it is easy to see why. She is uncertain of strangers who approach her kennel and demanding of her friends asking them, 'Please, please take me outside!' She has become a breeze to leash; more focused on getting to playtime than anything else. Lacy is a goofball, and I can't help but love it. When she is loose in a pen, she won't play with her toys unless you are there with her. Once you are, she scoops them up and starts bouncing around, happy as a child on Christmas. She jumps up on me as if to say 'Look what I've got! Wanna play?'
This is a dog who needs guidance and training, but loves to be with people. Won't you share her story and give her a chance?
Still not convinced? Make sure you watch her short video. Lacy deserves a stable and loving home.
