The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) was formed in late 2007 in response to a horrific shooting spree of street dogs by the Egyptian government. A small group of Egyptians and expatriates came together to fight this notion of population control and to protect and rescue the animals in immediate danger. ESMA is a charitable organization registered in Egypt (No. 3059/2007) that operates a shelter and adoption center. We currently house about 300 dogs and 300 cats. We are committed to improving animal welfare in Egypt in all areas of need, including: dogs and cats; donkeys and horses; animals in the Cairo zoo; and pet shop

ESMA needs your help: please consider becoming a regular supporter, at any level.

Dear ESMA community, we need your help. We are again facing and unknown level of social unrest along with economic effects here in Egypt, based on recent political events. We are blessed to have the number of supporters and followers that we do, but are forced to come to you to ask for your financial support, in a time when economic pressures within Egypt have caused us to lose one third of our local regular monthly contributions, and the price increases on basic commodities have caused our expenses to skyrocket. We are entirely supported from individual donors within Egypt and from abroad. Yet we have to continue to meet our basic operating expenses every month, whatever the rate the donations come in.

We are facing a financial crisis for several reasons: because we have continued to see a drop in our local contributions, as Egyptians are finding they have to cut unnecessary expenses including donating to local charities. At the same time, the price on meat, chicken, rice and bread, as well as dry pet food, has continued to rise. Working in Egypt, animal welfare falls ever lower on the list of concerns when the social, economic and political climate continues to worsen for people, but we have to continue in spite of these obstacles. We are now facing unpaid bills to our food vendors, the lifeline for our animals, and the prospect of a long and hot summer.

As those of you who follow this page already know, we have had to close our door to any new admissions excepting only the most urgent ones. We struggle to simply meet the immense ongoing monthly costs to care for almost 900 souls in our cat and dog shelters. We are coming to you now to ask you to please consider becoming a regular supporter, at any level.

With over 20,000 followers on Facebook, we hope that some of you will choose to help us. How can you do that?

1. If you have never contributed, we hope you will consider joining the regular sponsors we now have and signing up to make a regular monthly donation, any amount is appreciated.

2. If you are already making a monthly contribution, consider raising it by even a few dollars.

3. If you cannot contribute but believe in what we are doing, there may be someone you know who can, so pass the word along to your friends who love animals.

We estimate that it costs 300 Egyptian Pounds to provide care to a cat or dog every month, or approximately 40 USD. But we have monthly donors who give anywhere from ten to one hundred dollars a month, and any amount is welcome. All of the money received by ESMA in Egypt or through Animal Diplomacy goes directly for food, medical treatment and shelter of the animals.

If you live outside Egypt in Europe, the US, or Australia:

ESMA is a project of Animal Diplomacy, a registered US charitable organization in the US that supports our work. Make a recurring or one-time donation from almost anywhere in the world through

Animal Diplomacy.

1-800-Petmeds supports international animal welfare

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013
ESMA wants to send a big thank you to 1-800-Petmeds for making a donation of a box of animal care supplies for the animals in our shelters. These donation box will be delivered to Cairo by one of our ESMA supporters, who will be coming to Cairo soon to volunteer at the shelter. We appreciate both the efforts of our American supporter to coordinate this donation, as well as the fact that 1-800-PetMeds is a company willing to support an organization outside the US through their shelter donations program. Acts of generosity like this are what enable us to continue our work to improve the lives of Egypt’s animals.

Ramadan Iftar at ESMA

Saturday, August 25th, 2012
Although Ramadan is over, we wanted to share a few images from our ESMA iftar (meal to break the fast) that was held in the courtyard of the Shabramont cat shelter. Breaking the fast with friends and loved ones is one of the best aspects of Ramadan, and this evening was no exception. It is very rare that the people who keep ESMA going day to day are able to sit down together in a social setting, and so this was a great opportunity for the ESMA board, shelter workers, vets and volunteers to bond over some homemade Egyptian food.
