I am sure all of you are aware of the violence the publication of the Prophet Muhammed has caused. But I would like to ask you this one thing which has been puzzling me.Everytime I read an article on this event, when a Muslim is speaking and he mentions the Prophet's name, immediatly afterwards, in brackets, is: peace be upon him. Why is that? IP: Logged |

I was a practising Muslim once. Islam has two major sources. One is the Quran which was compiled roughly 632 AD. The second is oral traditions of the prophet and his closest companions called Hadeeths which were collected 250-300 years later. Scholars belonging to the Wahabbite School from Saudi Arabia believe that the oral traditions are also as sacrosanct as Quranic Injunctions. Some of these traditions insist on using "Peace be Upon Him" everytime the prophet's name is uttered, and since 99% of Muslims agree with Wahabbites on this particular tradition, it is meticulously followed. "SAL LAL LAHO ALAY HAY WASSALAM" OR PEACE BE UPON HIM is used just CHRIST is used for JESUS. It is only a way to express respect for Him. For other Prophets ( as the Muslims believe there were 124,000 in all) "ALAYHISS SALAM" is used. For Jesus they will say "ISA ALAYHISS SALAM", for Abraham "IBRAHEEM ALAYHISS SALAM", for Moses "MUSA ALAYHISS SALAM" and the same for all of the Praphets. As Prophet Muhammad is believed to e the most loved by Allah he has a different surname. What is actually believed is that every time you send peace and salam to Him it is returned ten fold, hence the tradition.IP: Logged |
