Recently been thru one of the Amish village yesterday and was taken aback by what I saw. There are pros and cons on having such a community , not enough ink on hand to write about them. Found one book on this subject so far. http://www.amishdeception.com/BookIntro.htm IP: Logged |

Personally having worked alongside them for over 2 decades and knowing many Amish...all I can say is they are not sweet and quaint like most think. Nor are they pious and pure. At least not Ohio ones. Mostly a bad lot.------------------ It is not about waiting for storms to pass...it is about learning to dance in the rain! __________________________________________________________________________ IP: Logged |

I am intrigued by their culture the more I experience them But appalled upon seeing what their religious leaders have done to them. They follow the bible literally. Well hope people are not repressed there, which I don't think they are per this quote: quote: When Amish youth turn sixteen, they enter their rumspringa, or "running around" period. Because Amish teens are not baptized until later in life, they are given the opportunity to experience the world outside of their community and decide whether they want to leave it, or become baptized in the Amish church...Because they are not baptized, they are not required to follow the church’s dress requirements or rules against drugs, drinking, and unsupervised relationships with members of the opposite sex. Some rent apartments with friends, while others continue to live at home with their parents. Although many Amish teens do not engage in “wild” behavior, some of them do, and wind up with alcohol and drug addictions or dealing with unplanned pregnancies. ---“Rumspringa: To Be or Not to Be Amish,” by Tom Shachtman

HHmmm...not the ones I knew/know. As to Amish young people...many from teens to as late as 30ish...big time party animals and trouble makers, lawbreakers whatever. Did you visit a real community or the "tourist trap" version? Major difference my friend!------------------ It is not about waiting for storms to pass...it is about learning to dance in the rain! __________________________________________________________________________ IP: Logged |

No, haven't talked or know any one real. I said it poorly perhaps, I meant, I was intrigued by what I heard about them so far. I passed thru their village on sunday (sabbath day). Proof that they do follow the Bible literally. I have been to the Lancaster one. I know there are Amish people in Ohio and Indiana too. They have this amazing history where 5000 people are now 150000. Wonder how it was possible without incest No telephones in their homes, no electricity, no auto.... Elders present when boys take girls for dating etc etc....I saw one such wagon hehe.
