How do any non Christians (and any totally non religious folks) here celebrate the Yuletide Season? ------------------ I must perhaps resign myself to having only stolen and brief tastes of happiness, for it appears that I may never be invited to the feasts. ~LEXX The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. ~Henry David Thoreau IP: Logged |

I know some atheists who still do the tree and presents. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

I used to go out and decorate trees with food for birds and other wildlife. And do a Winter Solstice celebration/ritual. IP: Logged |

Yes, so do I. And those are pagan traditions.

Pagan or Christian, those atheists are still celebrating a religious holiday.------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

If Capitalism can be counted as a religion, then plenty of atheists can still consider themselves meant for it! As for me, I guess pretty traditionally, as I learned it as a child, kinda like how newly converted Christians kept many of the pagan elements in celebrating it. IP: Logged |

I celebrate the Solstice, get out the yule log (if I havnt burnt it already)...See family on Christmas Eve, sometimes, mostly like to be alone, Christmas Day with my (Christian) family. I put up a real tree, usually a Norfolk Island Pine, decorate with stars, Woodland Santas, Mistletoe (I gather myself) and a Nativity scene to honor my very Christian, now deceased grandma. Of course lots of food. I take everything down the day after Christmas and I dont celebrate New Year's as mine is Samhain. IP: Logged |

I celebrate New Year's but not Xmas as much. Perhaps due to the many gift-less Xmas's I lived as a child. I don't appreciate the hyper consumerism of the days but I do like seeing smiley faces and getting warm hugs. I just wish people remembered to be like this the rest of the year...

A friend sent this to me! quote: A funny story posted to a group I'm in, but unfortunately, with some truth to it -- at Wal*Mart we are only allowed to say Happy Holidays because we might offend someone if we say Merry Christmas.
quote: Happy Saturnalia! What's this empire coming to? Now they want us to stop greeting people with "Io Saturnalia!" "We have all these different cultures in Rome," they tell us. "We shouldn't offend anyone," they tell us, "We've got to be inclusive." We've got the barbarians from the north with their tree decorations and their fire rituals. And the weirdos from Gaul, cutting mistletoe with a golden sickle. And the Mithraists, the Zoroastrians, the Isis cults, and, of course, those characters who hang out in the catacombs. "Hail, Winter!" we're supposed to say. I ask you, what next: we lose the feast? We stop the Solstice parties? No more honoring Ops, goddess of abundance? I was buying some greenery down by the Forum the other day, and there's old Macrobius with some Visigoth chick, and she goes, "Gut Jule." And I go, "Hey! In this country, we say, "Io, Saturnalia! Maybe you should go back to where you came from." Then Macrobius goes, "She can't, she's a slave." Whatever. At this time of year, the Visigoths sacrifice a pig and burn a special log that they dance around, instead of acting like normal people and going to the temple of Saturn. I swear, I was at this party over at Septima Commodia's house the other day. She always has a Saturnalia party. Anyway, she decorated the place with prickly green leaves. "It's holly," she said, "The latest fashion from Brittania. They all do it in Londinium." It gets worse. She had this statue of some goddess from Ultima Thule or somewhere, name of Frigga, sitting right there on the dining room mensa. I mean, this is darned near blasphemous. I'd be scared about what the lares and penates would do if I put that thing in my house. But Septima Commodia just said, "Oh get over it! We're cosmopolitan around here." Cosmopolitan. That's what they call it. Well by Jupiter, I live in Latium. I'm a Roman. And this empire was founded on the principle that the gods, our gods, must be honored at the appropriate time and in the appropriate way. None of this foreign heretical nonsense or these strange customs from Germania or Hibernia or Palestine. I say, "Io, Saturnalia!" and if you don't like it, you can leave.

I am Christian but see the pagan worships as an extension of life and a natural part of the Holy Day I honor the Christ, have a Pagan tree and know Jesus gives Santa a present Happy Holidays ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

I'm Agnostic and I go on trips. This year it's back home to South Africa to surf, swim with the Great White, spin in circles, giggle, get toasty under the warm southern hemisphere summer sun. Love that quote NativelyJoan.I'm also agnostic. Raised Catholic/Christian. So I do the whole celebrating with my family. Exchanging gifts with friends and family. Go to family on x mas Eve and day. I use to be one of those people that only went to church on x mas and easter. I don't even do that anymore. But shopping for people also gets me in the spirit. And not having to go to work for a few days. =D IP: Logged |
