In the long-supressed fifteenth century Christian classic, "The Net of Faith," by the Bohemian writer Petr Chelčický ("Helchitsky" in English translations), it is reported that the degeneration of Christianity began with the rule of Emperor Constantine I. The admission of Constantine, a man of notoriously questionable morals, into the Christian Church by Pope Sylvester in exchange for wealth and power was the beginning of an unfortuneate collaboration between the Church and worldly authorities. The Early Church regarded pacifism and poverty (or the renunciation of private property) as central to Christ's teaching. Since the time of Constantine, the true Christian teaching has been systematically distorted and hidden from the people. Now, the figurehead of the Catholic Church (the largest aggregate of so-called Christians), the Pope, sanctions war and has his own city. The Vatican, defended by the Pope's own private army, is estimated at anywhere between 5 billion and 15 billion dollars, and is ostensibly devoted to the service of the one who allowed himself to be crucified, rather than condone self-defense, and who, when asked, "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?", replied, "Sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven."
Go figure.
