I almost placed this in another thread, but thought it would probably go best in its own. It's from a scifi perspective, but I thought it quite brilliant all the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjnpTcvGvts IP: Logged |

It's from a series called Babylon 5, no affiliation with the Trek shows (though it aired when many of the Star Trek spinoffs did).It had some new age elements to it. There was a war in which Earth was losing badly, but just as all seemed lost the victorious conquerors suddenly pulled back and called for peace without saying why. As the aliens could've demanded Earth's unconditional surrender and likely gotten it, humans embraced the peace treaty offered them which was quite generous and it was a mystery to humans why this happened. It got revealed in the series that it was because the victorious aliens, who were very spiritual, somehow came to believe that at least some humans were the reincarnation of their own species, and from then on they didn't want to kill humans anymore than they killed each other (and believed humanity could be taught to be better than it was). What is truth? Truth is when you speak from your heart, and you don't fall away from it.God is the interconnectedness of all things. But that's just me. IP: Logged |

Truth is irrefutable fact. That which is true or in accordance with fact or reality. Impossible to deny or disprove.

How? A fact is a fact and therefore truth; unless it is a lie or a fallacy as in for example; "a flat Earth" and so forth. It can be an educated guess about what nature is going to do, or about why nature does what it does. "Hypotheses are single tentative guesses--good hunches--assumed for use in devising theory or planning experiment, intended to be given a direct experimental test when possible." (Eric M. Rogers, "Physics for the Inquiring Mind." (Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1966) What makes a statement a scientific hypothesis, rather than just an interesting speculation? A scientific hypothesis must meet 2 requirements: A scientific hypothesis must be testable, and; A scientific hypothesis must be falsifiable. http://www.batesville.k12.in.us/physics/phynet/aboutscience/hypotheses.html

Some things are facts but are unproven. For example, one lone doctor claimed that ulcers were caused by a bacterium. He was chastised and made a laughing stock among the medical community. But after quite some time, he was proven to be correct. IP: Logged |

That youtube was my first introduction to Babylon 5. I watched a few other scenes.Interesting! I saw the one about 'the ant' picked up on a finger, then dropped off onto another flower. How we cannot at all fathom the complexities of 'What's out there'... It's way beyond our ability to grok. That one haunted me all day. [2:48] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahYNYW484Vc IP: Logged |
