I only discovered Grant Morrison and his works in recent years, although it regards to his own influences when it comes to his writings etc, such as Robert Anton Willson and Philip K Dick, well those authors I had already been a fan of for a long time so transition into Morrison's concepts of reality (both in his Comics and his Life Philosophy) wasn't too difficult. That said, I don't feel you really need to have those 'primer' level authors already ticked off as an entry point, as GM's influences in pop culture runs deep whether you might be aware of it or not because of movies like the Matrix etc which incorporated many of his themes and ideas, even characters from near whole cloth such as 'Morpheus'.

I have another thread on this board about Nihilistic Optimism, and this would also fit into such... but the layered ideas of Magic and Manipulating reality definitely adds a different level of flavor to the whole (in how you can attempt to change things).
As a side note, I'd highly recommend reading Grant Morrison's 'The Invisble's' series, though with a caveat of saying... be prepared for some extreme levels of density and time-distortion, and that itself is not everyone's cup of tea... not if you prefer a more linear mode of story telling.
