Yes I have hardened my heart. Especially because at first I thought I could do something about it if it were an isolated incident... but since experience has led me to believe this is a nation-wide phenomenon, patience is required. It's not going to change overnight but it has to change because it's totally counter-productive. It's not helping learning along, it's actually working against education. Another thing that breaks my heart in Korea even more is the way people treat their pets, especially dogs. Basically all dogs in Korea are caged or tied up. All the time. When I first took this in I nearly died. In fact, one of the reasons why I hardly ever visit my mom in the next village (she always visits me .... but also actually I'm a bit of a stay-inside person but anyway so it's not the only reason I don't go out much) ... but anyway, where my mom stays her neighbours have several dogs. When the dogs are only puppies they walk around free. But once they reach a certain point they get put either in a cage or tied up on a very short leash. The dogs are so cute and are always so happy to see me so I play with the ones that are tied up but its hard not to cry. I mean also they never get taken for walks or anything. It blows my mind and I try not to think about it. One reason for why they do this is because in Korea there aren't many fances, and the traffic is hectic, so dogs that do run free end up as roadkill. But on the other hand the main thing is that people in Korea don't seem to have time for anything but work work work. That is why the kids stay at school all day long because their parents stay at work all day long and want the kids out from under their feet on those rare occasions that they are at home. Oh by the way, did I mention Korean kids also go to school on Saturdays? Half-day, but still. It's like people here don't believe in free time. In Afrikaans, which Unmoved will recognized, there's this saying: "Ledigheid is die duiwel se oorkussing." It's a very old saying which means literally 'laziness is the devil's ear cushion' ... weird I know, but the meaning is: if you give people spare time or unsupervised time where they are not busy doing something or at least busy pretending to do something, then evil will brew in their heads/ hearts and they'll get up to no good. Again, it's like a two edged sword with a good side and a bad side, this mentality, because in Korea basically there is no crime. I mean it. Like... zero crime. No stealing, no raping, no murdering. Probably the only crime that happens is maybe wife-battering and that doesn't get reported much. I could go on for ages and ages about what I've observed and what I've thought about it all etc. At this point I feel Korea definately has to change: become less hierarchichal and more egalitarian, allow more freedoms for people, get some idea of the virtue of empathy. The thing is the Koreans themselves are a very hardened people because of the Korean war. Only a few decades ago their country was basically finished and people were so poor and hungry they ate grass (so the story goes anyway). After the division of the country into North (communist, with a Russian based extreme Marxist-Leninist ideology) and South (capitalist, Americanized, dependent on the USA - army's presence here for keeping the 'peace' with the north) the USA poured huge amounts of money, time and energy into building up the infrastructure that had been destroyed in the war. So it's almost like a new country bloomed like a mushroom. Then, because they had suffered so much, the Koreans began working their a$$es of and in a short time became a totally thriving economy. I mean Samsung, LG, Hyundai etc. are HUGE. Now if only they could get to the point where they chill the f#@* out!! Sorry for the profanity but it shows how worked up I can get about this stuff... I guess they're scared that if they let things go just a little bit all the bad things they experienced will come back.

They want to be in control don't they Fatinkerbell? The country as a whole I mean. They don't want anything like that to happen to them again. They can't stop and smell the roses while the war's still a living memory to a great many.

one of my uncles married a korean woman. she is so sweet and kind and very well educated. i feel terrible if she endured any of that. she was from a wealthy family, do you think she went to that kind of school? she has been here for 26 years now, but htey are going back there to retire in a few years. they don't have any children. I really hope she never had to be treated like that.

Well I think in general girls get treated a lot better than boys. There are many very sweet kids who hardly ever get into trouble as far as I can see... Especially if they're also hard-working.Well maybe long ago it wasn't like that ... I mean all the weird punishments... Maybe I should ask my co-teacher, who is quite a bit older than me, and who is one of the sensitive souls around here, what school was like for him when he was growing up ... But it's a bit of a sensitive topic if ya know what I mean ...

Hey fatinkerbell~

So, I kinda almost scolded Michael (okay, I scolded ) for not telling me how awful it can be there, and it turns out that he is in a better Haegwon than the rest. His has been around for more than 20 yrs and they get great treatment.

He assured me that you and wheels were pretty unlucky in your experiences and thanks fatinkerbell because I think he liked how concerned I became. Yes, Cancer Moon and Virgo Sun came out in blazing glory and he took it to mean something good.

So, thanks!
Thanks wheels

He does agree on the cruelty to animals, and coincidentally, he had just rescued a small cat from a snare a few days ago! I can't believe that there are animal snares still around!

How are you doing? What do you get up to in Korea on weekends?

Hey Unmoved... yay about the vibes between you and Michael being cool! Yours is such a romantic story I just HAVE to see it come to a happy end! Well usually on weekends I just sleep, watch TV, do my laundry, clean my flat, and make karaoke video's of myself that I delete right away! : ) But this weekend actually my mom and I went to Seoul to do shopping and so on. Also I go twice a month to Seoul to see a therapist ... wow sounds hectic I know but it's something that I really have to do because I was raped at the age of 18 ... and it was my father. Well my biological father because I never even met him until I was sixteen. Well as you know from the 'random facts about me' I was a drug addict for a long time and I have a nasty self-destructive streak, so the therapy is really helping. There are some things you just can't deal with alone and now at the age of 36 with relationships that were both good and bad behind me, I've realized I can't just keep on pretending I'm OK and that I dealt with the trauma... So basically every second weekend my mom and I go to Seoul, which takes quite a while because we are like way out in the "country". Public transportation in Korea is like amazing, but still we have to take about an hour's bus ride to Suwon, which has the nearest subway station, and from there it's another hour into Seoul by subway, and you often have to change subway lines so it can be a little complicated. The subways are so cool for someone from SA who has only seen them in movies... I totally enjoy speeding through underground tunnels in brightly lit, TV festooned carriages with all kinds of signs and ads on the wall and lots of people staring at their feet and ignoring being such close quarters with each other. Once or twice I've been in an actual subway crush, where people are literally pushed together like sardines, but usually the subway is only moderately crowded. It can be quite tiring, especially in the heart of Seoul in the middle of the day, when EVERYONE seems to be riding the subway and you just keep praying that you'll get a seat for at least half the way... basically more than half the people on a subway have to stand. Anyway my mom is quite adept at navigating her way around so I just relax and go with the flow sticking close to her. Sometimes you see foreigners sticking out like sore thumbs squinting at the signs and at their maps, hopelessly trying to make sense of all the info and looking very confused and lost. In Seoul itself you tend to find looooots of foreign young people all around ... Canadian and American mostly. There's an area in Seoul called Itaewon which is basically like China town for the English speaking population of the province, and many migrate there on weekends to 'party in English', so to speak. There's a really cool used-book store that is essential if you wanna keep yourself entertained at home ... I got four paperbacks yesterday but I don't read as voraciously as I used to read at home ... you kinds gotta make the books last. If I have slow day at school I spend my time playing poker on the internet while reading ... it ensures that I don't finish my book too quickly and also that I don't lose too much fake money. A couple of months ago I was up to 35 million chips (fake chips ... if only they were real!!) and then in a fit of boredom and impatience I lost it all in a couple of days. You haven't lived until you've lost 30 million fake poker chips in one week, is my new motto : D

fatinkerbell~

I can relate to many of your experiences and girl, if therapy helps, therapy it is! I commend you for recognizing that you need to do something about it. It means that a lot of the self-destructive tendencies are unraveling because you chose to get help. Congratulations!

lol : D ... I wonder if there is something in my chart to indicate that I might be a shy narcissist ... I totally love watching myself sing and of course I think I'm wonderful, but I don't want my bubble burst by anyone else who might point out that my voice is anything less than perfect. Narcissism perfectly intact : D

Hey unmoved! Well I have an interesting answer to that... What's been occupying me? Michael Jackson! The reason being that the students want me to teach them Michael Jackson songs. They think the songs I choose for them for "pop-song" class are old-fashioned and boring. Go figure. If only they knew I'm actually a Marilyn Manson fan! Old fashioned and boring my a$$! : D

Yeah, kids forget that we were once kids. It is so short-sighted and simultaneously amusing. They just don't get that we are probably now bored with the things they find cool, as opposed to not liking them or being ignorant about them.

I've missed you, fatinkerbell.

You're refreshing and more comfortable in your skin than most, or at least it feels that way. Anyway, I wouldn't want to inflate the ego of a self-proclaimed Narcissist, but yeah I was thinking of how cool you are. Or maybe, I am trying to butter you up so that I can send you on spy missions in Inch'on.

Anyway, be good, sweetheart. Don't work too hard. And I love Michael Jackson. He is one artist that is responsible for my career. So, spread MJ love to the kids!!!

Unmoved.

Well I just luuuuuuv being buttered up so thanks! Well I'm up for being a spy ... Like Jim Morrison says: "I'm a spy, in the house of love ... ". Hee-hee : ) No seriously sometimes there are get-togethers of South Africans in Korea where I might run into him and can suss out the situation. But if I were you I wouldn't be worried ... I think he really loves you : )

Oh and BTW I also really love Michael Jackson ... so in fact I've practising "Beat It" and "Black or White" so I can teach them to the students. I was also trying to impress them with my 'moonwalk'. But it's been years...

out of curiosity, I realized that you, Michael and I have an interesting conjuction.

Your AC, is Sun and my Vertex are conjunct.
His Moon is conj your Jupiter, MC and your NN.
Your Jupiter, MC and your NN are trine my Sun. (not a conjunction but interesting and relevant)
Your Moon is conj my NN and loosely conj his AC

There are other conjunctions. Weird hey?

I confess I'm not so good at analyzing apects yet ... NN is North Node and MC is Medium Coeli (middle of the sky) right? Is AC ascendant??? (I'm guessing not ... ) Eek! I reveal my stupidity yet again... If you wanna you can post the composite (which I also don't quite know how to do yet but after all I'd REALLY like to learn)...

OK I have to ask two questions ... what is the significance of the asteroid Vertex? Also how does one interpret NN? Anyway I see now AC is ascendant ... What, was Michael an Aries? Really? I guess it would make sense like a lot of fire energy and Aries is also like the "youth" of the Zodiac and MJ is a soul that was very "youthful" and "innocent" if you know what I mean... (For the record, I do NOT believe that he was a pedophile.) His Moon conj my Jupiter ... wow ... I interpret that as his emotional life would have fit in very much with my philosophical views, cos for me Jupiter is kinda like my planet of luck and thinking and philosophy and excess, in short, sort of 'how I live my life', by Jupiter!! I can imagine that actually because if his feelings were put to word in his songs I can totally identify and agree ... I feel really strongly about issues of equality and fairness and I think that's what a lot of his songs are about!
Then .. my moon, your NN, his Asc... so Cancer - for me the moon is really a hard planet to live with cos I can get VERY emotional, and I can see the caring side of MJ in a Cancer AC and NN I still have to figure out but isn't it something to do with career or karma. Well Unmoved, now you've gone and done it! You'll simply have to educate me!!!
But I do feel a kinda bond with you and I do truely sympathize with Michael Jackson so yes .... in-te-res-ting!!!!!!! : )

No, Not Michael Jackson. He is Virgo.
I mean Michael from Soul Unions.

The Vertex is not an asteroid but a hypothetical/theoretical point calculated by the position of one's AC, MC and Sun I think. It symbolizes fate, people, places or times etc.

The NN is all about destiny, past lives and in more simplistic terms, it tells us where we are destined to be in order to get our peace of mind, IF we allow it.

Read up here: http://www.falconastrology.com/vertex.htm if you've got time.

Am on my way to watch vid.
