I think for safety my car blocks the brakes on ice, but that can be dangerous also.IP: Logged |

People are not familiar with driving in/on snow/ice/slush there. Think "ball bearings dumped all over and slathered in super slippery silicone"; and your tires act like they do not have any tread. Brakes; unless they are at least ant-lock brakes; and snow tires or all season radials; it makes driving and braking very difficult. quote: Originally posted by Randall:

They were doing the "ball bearing spill/silicone" effect I mentioned above. Also was it black ice? Like the road looked OK but had a thin layer of transparent very hard slick ice? I almost wrecked once from that. I was driving on packed snow; doing OK; and then wham! I slid when I hit black ice under the snow on a bridge. I spun so many times I do not know how many. When I finally stopped spinning; I was some 70 or so feet farther down the road. Very scary! Even living here where we are use to snow; ice is still a nightmare to drive on. In fact; it is often impossible. quote: Originally posted by Randall: I think for safety my car blocks the brakes on ice, but that can be dangerous also.
Yikers! You do not want your brakes to lock! That could send you into a slide or spin! You shuld not brake; but gently pump the brakes a little and just try to steer. No hard braking or fast turns ever. quote: Originally posted by Randall:

Do you know if you have anti-lock brakes? Also what kind of tires? Glad you are OK! IP: Logged |

Oh; a tip for Winter driving; put some bags of sand or whatever in your trunk. It helps to weight the car down on snow.IP: Logged |

I have new tires, and I don't know about the brakes, but pressing them softly didn't work. The ice was visible. There was no noticeable sliding, which made me think my brakes weren't working at all. The car just kept going in a straight line. IP: Logged |
