Does anyone have a general idea? I know we have to take retros into account over a long period of time or a lot of degrees, so a link to an ephemeris would be cool too but I would just like to know how long it takes each to move one degree.

sun.. a day moon .. a couple of hours merc..maybe 18 hours or so depends venus... a day mars...just over a day jupiter...5-10 days saturn 8 days but can be up to 2 weeks uranus....3 weeks neptune...6 weeks pluto...8 weeks you could try astro.com but it's easier if you have a book then you get a better picture but you do need to get an ephemeris because pluto will sometimes only move 2 degrees a year because of retro phases and neptune may do the same as planets are coming into retro they will slow down and stay on degrees longer IP: Logged |

Also, the elliptical nature of orbits (Pluto is an extreme example) causes planets to vary the amount of time in a degree. To my understanding, elliptical orbits cause different two effects: 1) Speed. When a planet is at it's Perihelion (closest to the Sun) the gravitational pull increases and causes the planet to pick up speed, and 2) Distance. Because the zodiac bands widen as they extend further into space, there is also less "zodiac surface area" to cover when a planet's elliptical orbit brings it closer to the Earth.IP: Logged |

I'll find grupovenus' animated flash program for you when I'm at a computer. It shows the movement of planets by date and hour, and you can make it go forwards or backwards.IP: Logged |

Thank you SO much! What a wealth of information. I am really glad I asked this question. Afflictedvenus, thank you so much, I am going to save this thread and refer back to it so I can absorb this information completely. ScorpionicWeb, thank you, I did not know that they went faster closer to the sun and I love knowing that now. I don't totally understand the rest of what you said about bands of the zodiac widening in space but I hope to understand over time. And I really love it that you guys understand it more scientifically and have a love of astrology. AG, oh that link sounds great and I think seeing it will help me understand. Thank you so much for finding it. IP: Logged |

Mystic:To picture what I mean by how "bands widen", you just have to look at a birthchart. The center of a birthchart represents the Earth. So, the closer to the outer edge of the wheel, the further from the Earth and thus more surface area is used. A circle (i.e., orbit) drawn near the center of a chart will have a smaller circumference than a circle drawn towards the outer edge of a chart. At one time in history, many astrologers actually created charts with the symbols for the Sun, Mercury, and Venus drawn closer to the center, with Saturn drawn at the outer edge of the chart wheel which made a visual example of how slow "old man Saturn" moves through the zodiac. Pluto's orbit is so elliptical that when at it's perihelion/aphelion (Sun-centered) points, it's relevant to us geocentrically (Earth-centered). I hope that did more to clarify my point than to confuse it... And about planets speeding up... this is actually how we launch telescopes into deep space. We basically shoot a space probe toward the massive Sun and the craft picks up speed from the Sun's great gravitational pull, but the launch trajectory is far enough from the Sun to keep the craft from becoming stuck in it's orbit. The Sun essentially acts as a sling-shot and whips the craft outward into space, toward Saturn, Uranus, etc., at a much faster speed than we can launch it with rocket propulsion alone. IP: Logged |

Oh this thing is GREAT. I am learning so much in the last couple days! I really appreciate all of this help. This is perfect to help me wrap my mind around this. I just stopped it right before my birthday this year because Saturn would be exactly conjunct my Pluto and a few degrees conjunct my Mercury and Sun... and loosely conjunct my Venus/Uranus. I stopped it when the Sun was exactly on top of Saturn and Merc is just a little ahead pretty much on top of my Sun and conjunct my Pluto. It is of course all opposite Uranus. And all square Pluto. Frankly, I'm a little frightened. :S Venus is also opposite Neptune and Jupiter conjunct in the sky (and Nep/Jup would be conjunct my natal Mars and NN so Venus opposite my Mars and NN). I guess there will be some energy to deal with around that time... yikes! Maybe I should put this toy away for a while... hehe Seriously though, this would be a great tool for people trying to find the best wedding date etc, wouldn't it? Thanks a lot for passing this along, AG!!

interesting how storytelling old posts from forums could be. whenever i see an old bumped post from years ago it just gives me such an odd feeling. it reminds me that everything is so fleeting. in a few years, i probably wont be posting on this forum. then again, in a few years i might! i dont know where this is going but i feel compelled to share my feelings.

Its too variable to give a set value to each. But you're right. Check an ephemeris. ------------------ The Declinations Guy Astrology & Natural Medicine blog IP: Logged |

It is so so simple. Go to http://www.true-node.com/eph1/ type in name of body say jupiter, select 500 days if you think about it you can solve any problem ------------------ LeekingChee IP: Logged |
