The Mayans were one of the most ancient civilizations to date. In those times the knowledge of the sacred calendar and the twenty named-days was kept by both priests and calendar specialists who read fortunes and answered questions for the public. In the lands of the Maya these people were, and are, called daykeepers. The Aztec word for the astrological calendar is "tonalpouhalli" and the order of the days was kept in picture-books called "tonalamatl," which means "book of fate." When a child was born, the parents would go to a priest or reader to learn the name of the birthdate. Part of the child's name would be the name of that day. In the manuscripts from Aztec times, persons are often referred to by their calendar name. Eight-Deer, a hero in one ancient picture-manuscript, is a good example. The parents would also learn about the child's fate, character and profession. In order to avoid a bad fate, parents would often have their children baptized on a better day, even if this meant waiting a few days to make the birth official.

Perhaps as far back as 3,000 years this unique form of astrology began to evolve in the Mesoamerican region of the New World, today's Mexico and northern Central America. A sequence of 20 signs, not of space like our Western zodiac, but of time, evolved and became the core of a great astrological tradition that has been perpetuated up to the present time. The key to this tradition and the framework within which the 20 signs cycle is the 260-day astrological calendar.

Many people have heard about the Mayan calendar. More properly called the Long Count, this time-keeping tradition is essentially astrological – it was the mundane astrology of ancient Mesoamerica. The Long Count is a 5,125-year period that is one fifth the length of the roughly 25,600-year cycle called the precession of the equinoxes. The ancient Maya divided this period into smaller pieces much like our calendar year is divided into months, weeks and days. The most important division of the Long Count is the 260 katuns, or periods of about 20 years. Each katun functions like a day-sign, except that it is the length of a human generation! Today we are living during the final years of the last katun which will end in 2012.

(PLEASE NOTE : You are free to answer any one of the Following

Using the 20 Mayan Day signs, what sign do you fall under and what personality traits stand out the most to you ? Based on accuracy do you think this ancient system of astrology particulary works for you ?

My Mayan sign is the Eagle. Persons born under it are usually independent, perfectionists, and technically minded. They can be very ambitious and critical, yet they also enjoy a good escape now and then. This is an open-minded day-sign, the sign of J.F. Kennedy and Cary Grant.

Mayan Animal Moon Sign Coz
English Name Hawk
Crystal Amethyst
Interpretation
The eighth moon sign of the Mayan calendar is the Hawk. It can be seen in the night occupying a vast area from the end part of Capricorn to Pegasus. Popularly known as 'Coz' in Mayan language the hawk is a symbol of sharp mind and courage. Just like a hunting hawk spotting its victim from far above the ground, you never lose sight of your aim in life. You are not hesitant to put that extra effort to get what you need. Gifted with sound judgment and intuitive power, you are ambitious in your plan. Visionary qualities and the ability to act upon those ideals are the most striking features of your character. Mayans believed Hawk people to be very fortunate throughout their life. Even if you are tested by tough time, you know how to find your solution in almost no time.

Ahh, OK, I can have a sharp mind, more mental energy than physical. Courage, hard to evaluate that from a subjective standpoint. Have good powers of focus, why yes I do, am not an ADD sort of person. The sound judgment is interesting since I have Saturn exalted to the degree. Have been called intuitive. Ambition ebbs and flows. I do see possibilities where others don't, so that must be result of idealism. I believe that you make your own luck.

Thanks Lonake.

Here's Me:

Mayan Animal Moon Sign Cutz
English Name Peacock
Crystal Red Topaz
Interpretation
The fifth moon of the Mayan calendar is called the moon of the peacock. In Mayan language, peacock was known as 'cutz'. You are envisaged as an authoritative, proud and powerful person to others. The splendid profusion of blue and green of peacock's feather captures everyone's eye. In a similar way, you are showy and flamboyant. Numerous 'eyes' on peacock's fan is reflected in your observant nature. You are curious and always keep a constant watch on things going around you. You are elegant, dramatic and infused with sensuality. Your razzle-dazzle show wins widespread popularity and admiration in society. Behind your superficial frivolity, you have a strong urge for competition. You are passionate, sympathetic, loving and harbor a deep affinity for fine arts. You need lots of love and affection in return from your partner for emotional fulfillment.

Hmm. Sounds more like a leo, but not too far off for a sag with aries asc, and libra moon.

Hey GypseeWind, Im glad you found your sign. But here are 3 other places that I usually go to find out the Mayan signs. Starting with Astrology.com. Select Mayan Astrology, and input your date of birth. Your personal animal should appear... The other website where I got the above information regarding the history of the ancient Mayan civilization is www.alabe.com/day signs. The website mayanmajix.com is another really good one because it explains both your galactic tone number and mayan sun sign.

~Good Luck~

Edit @ Lonake How did I miss this one? Thanks anyway for the website it was very informative.

It says I am the LIZARD. Pretty accurate description from that site.

However...I looked into Mayan astrology before and had someone read a book about it to me and give me my sign..and it said I was "red resonant serpent".

Mayan Animal Moon Sign Kaw
English Name Snake
Crystal Emereld
Interpretation
The snake signifies healing power in Mayan culture. Unlike western mythology, no negative connotation is attached with the cultural image of snake. In Mayan language, snake is pronounced as 'Kaw'. The exceptional ability of serpents to shed their skin and come up with a newer one was seen as a symbol of redemption. The 'serpent' person is famous for his legendary resilience. You can easily let go of the old and review your ideas or priorities in life from time to time. This trait of your character makes you a wise person. Above all, you want to live a happy life. Lifestyle is important for you, but you do not sacrifice morality or your sense of justice for the sake of it. You are restrictive and find it difficult to love anybody without proper reason.

does this sound abit scorpy?

The day-sign Serpent, like the sign Alligator, is a sign of the east and it begins the next set of four signs. It rules power and charisma as well as emotional upheaval. Natives of this sign are intelligent but also extremist in many ways. Born under it were Marilyn Monroe and Warren Beatty.

I think so. Shed their skin could be interpreted as transformation which Scorpio rules. Dying and being reborn. The snake has a lot of wisdom to draw from, same as high functioning Scorp. Resilience def Scorp, tough as nails. Let go of the old fits since Scorp wants things to be in a state of renewal which you can't do when you cling to the past.
The only difference I see is that Scorpio has their own view on what constitutes as moral/immoral and they live by that law vs. what society states. They can be v.rebellious in that way and they often surprise others.
"You are restrictive and find it difficult to love anybody without proper reason."
---I see this as more Capricorn/Saturn.

ah yeah well i do have saturn in scorp opposed to venus.

in chinese i was born on snake month too apparently. i guess it equals taurus but not so sure if they have similar descriptions. hafta look.

this stuff is pretty interesting tnx OP!

the number is spot on as well. i have merc in aries 6th house. i work like this very much so.

quote:
You are difficult to pin down, and few ever penetrate your aura of mystery enough to truly know you well. You are a natural performer with not only a sense of the dramatic, but also a tendency to keep the act going well after the curtain has come down. Your emotional power is remarkable -- you are very affected by your feelings and are occasionally overcome by them. In this sense, you “wrestle with the serpent.”

It is possible that you either have a sharp sex appeal, or you are sexually frustrated. When your life is in balance, your deep reservoir of primal emotional energies is enticing to others. You are probably regarded by others as highly intelligent. Serpent personalities tend to be interested in subjects that involve strategy and transformation, such as psychology. It is because you are so deeply in touch with the process of transformation that you try to gather as much wisdom as possible.

spot on minus the err frustration i guess.. but nevermind lol. i do love psyc even tho i only took like 1 class i read all my parent's pre-med psyc books.

Mayan Animal Moon Sign Aak
English Name Turtle
Crystal Serpentine
Interpretation
The turtle moon is the 13th moon of Mayan calendar. During this time of the year, Mayans envisaged the imaginary image of a gigantic turtle stretching from Gemini to Cancer. In Mayan culture and in many other cultures of the world, turtle was seen as a symbol of patience and tenacity. All these traits are reflected in your character. You get what you want in life through effort and sheer determination. You can be very conservative in your views and opinions sticking to the same old concepts about life. Altering your ideas is a tremendous task. Hard working and composed, you are also a very sensitive person. When threatened or hurt, you can lock yourself into a closed space. However, your anger can be the worst of its kind on earth. You need to check your temper and keep the inherent calmness intact to lead a balanced life.

Western: Cancer; Chinese: Tiger.

There's a euphemism in there somewhere about a giant pussy and sea creatures....

Hmm, apparently I am a lizard.

Mayan Animal Moon Sign Xibkay
English Name Lizard
Crystal Garnet And Ruby
Interpretation
Due to its ability to change color within a blink of an eye, Lizard is associated with duplicity and confusion. While hunting, lizard changes colors to get what it wants. In a likewise manner, you can easily confuse others by sheer tactfulness to achieve your desired goal. But that does not mean that you are deceitful and prone to backbiting. You can be clever play a few tricks but can never be dishonest. It is difficult for others to realize you or even describe you in proper terms. As a result, you can be misunderstood or misinterpreted in a distasteful way. You are overtly sensitive to your environment and even the slightest change can not escape your observation.
