My kid had 150 grammal seizures. Had a BP that fluctuated to as high as 180 systolic and as low as 40 diastolic. He had a kidney transplant. He was said to need a liver transplant. A lung transplant. He was pronounced permanently brain damaged. He was said to never be able to talk, let alone walk or eat. Guess what? He has a 3.9 GPA in high school. He has Aspergers and I am proud of it.

You know, I actually have Uranus in the 7th house as well as it squaring something (don't remember what) and trining my moon. If I'm emotionally uncomfortable it's hard for me to look at someone. I also was bad at speaking up for myself when I was younger, such as to waiters, or verbalizing what I wanted. That may be an Aries thing though.

My son was just issued a diagnosis of mild aspergers and ADD. I have mixed feelings, the strongest is relief to finally have guidance and direction as to what has been going on for the last thirteen years ):

My child has struggled socially and academically all his life, with several quirky behaviors/responses. He does not like eye contact, dislikes hugs, and misses social cues.

In school he has been labeled many things, as it is hard for him to focus and so they call him unmotivated, insecure, rebellious. He was held back a grade early on, and has struggled ever since. I've fought the school tooth and nail to obtain extra help for him, and continue to fight the good fight.

It is so frustrating and challenging, having to teach him all his homework lessons every night because he doesn't process/retain information as other children do. It is hard for me to do this as we have two other children and work full time, especially as no matter how hard I try he always forgets his lessons. The only thing that captures his concentration are his video games.

I requested that he be tested for learning disabilities after the school discharged him from his IEP, and despite observation of his unfocused behavior in class, he was discharged last year.

I sought a second opinion on my own, and have had him tested with the results coming in last week. He is also in counseling which is helping somewhat, but my goal is to place him back on an IEP, as he is failing in several areas. I believe the school will have to accommodate him now that we have an official diagnosis, but am considering obtaining another assessment to cover our bases.

His behavior is usually good as he is shy and doesn't like to be in trouble, but he gets labeled as a trouble maker because of his fixed responses. Example, we will tell him to stop doing something, and he keeps doing it.

I honestly do not feel he is being defiant, it is like the cues just go over his head. He also loves to talk excessively about things he enjoys such as Science/Math & video games. I like engaging him in conversation, because he is shy and lacks confidence, but he will go on for hours on the same thing, repeatedly making the same statements/inquiries.

He doesn't pick up when people are getting bored or annoyed. For example, if I trip and give out a scream of pain he finds it amusing. He will also say inappropriate things in public, because he is very literal.

The good thing is despite his shyness and social quirks, he does have a few friends. I'm trying to find an extra curricular activity that he'd enjoy, but so far he has shot me down every time saying things such as he is embarrassed to wear shorts (soccer) or nervous that people will stare at him (band) or afraid he will pushed around (karate).

I'm leaning towards a solitary activity such as private art classes or instrument lessons, because it is so hard to see him be so insecure and not be able to provide him something of his own in which he may excel and feel accomplished. Hopefully once he is on ADD meds, this will help with his lack of focus/concentration which will bring him confidence if he begins to improve in academics.

Thank you so much for posting this thread, as it helps to read other accounts of what it is like for the individual with aspergers. Sometimes it feels very lonely not knowing what to expect. I'm going to buy the memoir "Look at me when I'm talking to you" about a man with aspergers.

My son's astro placements:

Aqua rising, Uranus loosely conj Neptune in the 12th. Uranus sextile 10th house Moon/Mars/Pluto (all conj in Sag), square Saturn in Taurus the 3rd. The 11th house is ruled by Capricorn, Virgo Sun and a water void chart, no planets or luminaries in the water element.

Anybody want to diss this list?

My two sons have the same IEPs. Let me dimension the elder son's achievements, notwithstanding his IEP. He has moderate Aspergers.

He is in 11th Grade. He has a 3.89 cummulative GPA, and a 3.92 GPA in 10th Grade. He is fluent in four languages and conversant in two others. He plays the piano at the concert level and the violin at the orchestra level. He is a national-level equestrian rider. He is school spelling bee champion. Yes, he is also a top computer gamer. He is applying for early acceptance to Yale. And he has a ready choice of girls to date (aquaguy91, confirm via my FB).

My brother read Alex Haley's Roots at 5 years old. He finished Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace at 8 years old. He had a perfect 1600 SAT. He is a member of MENSA.

Anyone want to diss Aspergers?

I have the same IEP meetings and I tell all the teachers and the principals to eat my shorts. I tell them that their neuro-typical brains are not equipped to handle the brillance in Aspergers.

I have Aspergers myself. And I'll say I did alright.

right on YTA! I hate those IEP meetings...they at one time actually wanted me to sign off on something that said that my son may be borderline mentally retarded. I fought that one tooth and nail...I told them that my son has a brilliant mind but no one is equipped to deal with it. They said he's mute..I said no he's very articulate in speech and says a whole lot to me at home...besides Einstein didn't speak till he was 4??

Einstein failed math in grade school and middle school. His teachers said that he was a failure at academics and would never succeed in school because he was unintelligent.

Ask them if they know about Professor John Forbes Nash of Princeton of Game Theory and Partial Differential Equations fame and the movie, "A Beautiful Mind." He won both the Nobel and the Fields Medal.

There you go. That's unintelligent and weird. These educators wouldn't know stellar if it smacked them in their faces like bird doo doo.

The educational system is designed for children to conform to a set of standards deemed appropriate by a bunch of over-educated idiots. My son also has Uranus in the 7th house....

The thing is... you beat these over-educated idiots at their own game, where they lose to you in the degree alphabet soup, and yet they refuse to admit that they are very wrong.

I had one of those attempt to brag to me that she has a Masters degree. Hahaha... that's when she got ripped a new one.

Their pee wee brains cannot appreciate anything that doesn't fit into their rigid mould and their limited comprehension.

So true YTA...I don't have any degrees, yet, but I am a very well read and self educated individual. That's always the first line of defense...who has the most education but in reality it's only a piece of paper. He is still my own child and I know his personality...I went out and got my son an independent evaluation and therapy & quite frankly they don't see what the fuss is all about that the school is making.

Thank you for the support, yourstruly

I only have my BA, no Masters yet but am well informed/read My children's school administrators dislike me because I know their rights, and do not give up. In our area, many parents are not informed and give in by just going along with what the schools decide.

During our last IEP meeting, the school staff was dismayed because I brought in an advocate and insisted on taking my own notes. Not surprising, the meeting minutes provided by their secretary left out many highlights, including the learning directors bully behavior.

At one point, the learning director question if I could afford having my son privately assessed... He even had the audacity to ask if I am able to afford private herh insurance. The whole experience was dreadful, it upsets me that this group is supposed to strive for helping the students and instead resorts to intimidation scare tactics.

I am wary of starting the process again but will keep persisting until my son receives the help he needs. I'm very blessed to have health insurance and family members in the field of child development/therapy to guide me towards available resources.

Thankfully my son is now seeing an excellent counselor who has promised to attend the new IEP meeting w us, and educate the staff on what he needs to help him succeed. I feel very bad for parents w/o knowledge of their rights under education, or a good support system ): If I do complete my masters someday, I'd like to work as a special Ed advocate advocate. No child or parent should ever be made to feel bullied by school staff.

Thank you also yourstruly for the list of amazing folks I will share this with my son today

PhoenixFire...you know I share your same concerns but as mothers we know our children better than any other person could ever know them. These IEP's bring out the momma bears in us...I never attend these meetings alone either. They have a team and so do I. Keep fighting the good fight...we always only be the only true advocates for our children and I know for sure that I will not allow my child to fall into the cracks for failure. Our children were designed to succeed.

With the issues that all of our children contend with, I believe it is a lot deeper than what the administrators can deal with, they only can see black and white. These children being born in the last 20 years or so are part of the Age of Aquarius.... If I could live inside the mind of my child, I know it would be brilliant.

I went to my IEP for middle school with my lawyer and psychologist. "Who is this?" "Independent counsel." It was a very short meeting.

If I send my wife, they just beat up on her. They become fearful when they face down Angry Asian Father. The last time they pi$$ed me off, I went straight to the First Selectman (Mayor). My property tax pays their salaries, and I reminded the First Selectman that I had also spoken to the Congressman and the Senator (federal).

And if that were not good enough, I'm sure the newspapers and NBC Universal would be delighted to hear of this story. Bob Wright, President and CEO of NBC, has grandchildren with autism. I assured the Selectman (Mayor) that *nation* NBC News would be very interested in a story about the town.

Angry Asian Father always strikes last.

I remember my first meeting when they assumed that I don't understand English. That was fun. Until my wife got mad and gave it away that they ought not to compete with me on degrees.

I was one of the first diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, and it has always affected my ability to do the right thing in public: for instance I have been and still am banned from places like libraries for tapping books or masturbating in public.

Whilst I may (and it’s a big “may”) have improved in this respect, I have constant fears that one day I will forget I cannot masturbate in public when the urges caused by titillating stories (like those of holy women fasting for many years only on Holy Communion) overwhelm my very limited self-control.

Although my Uranus is conjunct the Sun, it makes few other notable aspects: only a loose trine to Jupiter.

but yet i also desire, and know how to be like most others in terms of interaction. i'm generally distant, but if you approach me, im about as social and pleasing as you could want.

i have uranus trine sun, uranus square venus, if you consider wide squares (8 orb) then moon-square-uranus.
