Well if you know them pretty well, think about how you first met each other, how did the person present themselves back then, usually it makes sense if the planets in houses also make sense, and aspects to the moon...you can become pretty sure, but you will never know completely:P Would be extremely interesting if you some day got their real birthtime to see if you were right:P

I'd say the ascendant generally affects the nose to ears, faceshape, eyebrows + Hair

I've sorta learnt how each sign gives you a different nose-ears scope, you can learn to tell the Gemini (elf looking) features to say the more scorpionic ascendant

Thank you both. Actually I wanna learn generally, and right now I'm so curious to guess my grandfather's AC. Unfortunately, I will never know what time he was born. He's a last-days-Sagittarius with a Scorpio Moon. Till his 30's he was a usual wild Sagittarius and after that he became very wise, serious, great father and husband. Plus, he got married when he was 30, which is really rare for 1950... I bet he has a Capricorn Ascendant! If I also judge from the characteristics you mentioned I would not choose another ASC.

I also wish it were possible and I've been reasonably certain a few times.
Planets conjunct the ASC also influence physical features also I think.

I never judge it by facial features, I don't think those correspond. I judge through observation. what is the person doing when they think no one is watching? are they sitting quietly and working, playing with gadgets, grooming themselves, reading, talking, laughing, have nervous energy, etc. Clothing/style can sometimes help too. even when you don't get it exact, just through observation you can generally guess air/earth/fire/water

The way I do it is you look at what the person's sun and moon are, and think of a person who they resemble, then that person's sun or ascendant sign will usually be the missing ascendant.

Basically someone with an ascendant in gemini will literally resemble gemini sun people

Someone with aries ascendant will remind you of an aries sun person, as if they themselves had an aries sun. It's a mask people wear, as if they pretend to be this sign, or as if they want to be perceived as this sign

Each ASC has a "look". I could not figure out how people did it when I first came on but now I have my own ways of doing it
