Hi everyone, I have to prepare a presentation for my speech class and I've decided to talk about astrology. I only have five minutes though so I'm trying to decide what to focus on but it's going to be hard because it's such a broad topic. So any suggestions on what I should say? I can't decide if I should do the history of it, or talk about astrology in Chaucer and Shakespeare's works, or should I explain birth charts??I just can't decide what to choose! What do you think would be the most interesting? (I'm presenting to people who will most likely know nothing about astrology so nothing too complex!) IP: Logged |

I would briefly explain astrology was much more than a sun sign them somehow jump into the history of it. 5 minutes of this house, that house, lords, and aspects will send them beyond a hopeless confusion. History is something everyone can relate with and can be pretty fun. IP: Logged |

What is the criteria on which you will be evaluated? 5 minutes is pretty short. Don't go in depth. Stick to extremely simple basics. Pick 2 subtopics and write some sentences on each. Have one small example to exemplify each one of your points. For an intro, you can include questions to make it interactive. You could ask "how many of you think of zodiac signs when you think of astrology?" Then ask "how many of you know that you can totally understand your personality and see your compatibility with someone else through astrology?" I'm guessing no one will raise their hands. So you go into your subtopics. Make jokes like "everyone has 12 houses. Yes we're all rich! Who knew! If you ever feel like avoiding everyone and hiding, just go to your 12th house. It's the house of..." Refer to things people like, career, social life, money, problems with people, secrets, romance... so it perks up their attention. IP: Logged |

This is a good idea too. Include fun historical short stories. IP: Logged |

Haha, you cracked me up, it'd be a good start. quote: Refer to things people like, career, social life, money, problems with people, secrets, romance... so it perks up their attention.
I vote for this, maybe introducing a case study about crime, psychological problem that is showed in astrology, or some celebrity couples. ------------------ what goes up must come down, so when you're feeling down, the only way to be is up

Yes, that's very true, I don't want to confuse them! I have a bunch of books somewhere that focuses on the history of astrology, I'll have to go find them. IP: Logged |

Evaluation is solely on presentation skills, not really content, so I can talk about anything, which is nice but also hard because of all the possibilities to choose from that's perfect for the intro, I wasn't sure what to start with but a question is a great idea! That joke just made me laugh out loud, haha Thanks for you input! IP: Logged |

Start with: "When we hear the word "Astrology" we think of the Horoscope column in the newspaper or on the internet, when there's really so much more to astrology than that.
*Diagram 1 - Astrology Chart* "This is an astrological chart and you will quickly notice that it is a circle with two axis intersecting it, creating a cross. This circle represents the wholeness of an individual but without the two axis intersecting, it would have no direction. ..." Continue on to explain the basics of the Ascendant Descendant and the Imum Coeli and Medium Coeli in simple terms. Do not mention the Sun at all, unless you at first decide to pick someone out from the class (using their chart) and explain how the Sun only shows a very small part of this person's character, blah blah. I'm just suggesting here but of course, it's all up to you! IP: Logged |

I like it, it's true, they will probably all be thinking of astrology merely as the columns at the back of magazines and what not! I'll have to use that in my intro I love what you said about "without the two axis intersecting, it would have no direction. " Thanks for your help IP: Logged |

I'll suggest Brad-Angie. Brad is a Sag, and just look at Horoscope doesn't explain why he is so devoted in his marriages. Horoscope is just a part of the iceberg, Astrology is the whole picture.
