I understand "Smoke in your eyes" to mean you're blind to any faults your lover may have. I also understand "flame" to mean the love you carry for that person.

Thus, when the flame/love dies, the smoke should clear, you can see the person clearly. Right?

I've always interpreted that like to mean when the love dies, THEN the smoke gets in your eyes or the blinders go on. It's just seems confusing.

But I guess people will not grant that Ami's reaction was provocative and caused an escalation. As usual. She could have ignored us. We weren't writing to get her attention, anyway.

It was just for passersby who might be curious about the facts.

When love is lost, it hurts for a while. It's painful. Later, love is still lost but you're no longer hurting.

Nine ... I know! We can turn and turn these phrases. Maybe that's part of the allure-- 'unclear' (smoky, misty) meaning to the lyric?

Reminds me of a person crying, and standing in the rain, says the raindrops disguise the teardrops.

Or, someone saying their eye is bothering them from outer irritant, when they are actually emotionally moved near tears.

But of course, people come in saying "Who the hell are you to correct her????!!!" (paraphrasing). And we have to supply the background argument, ie "This is a pattern" and then they say "Who the hell are you to point to patterns???!!!!" (paraphrasing) and so on.
