You may have 1-4% of Neanderthal DNA living inside you.You may not if you are African (esp from the West or South) quote: The findings suggest that modern humans, after migrating from Africa 45,000 to 80,000 years ago, bred with Neanderthals then in the Middle East before spreading into Eurasia. The authors estimated that 1 to 4 percent of the modern human genome of non-Africans can be traced back to the Neanderthal.

Yes I read that in the paper. My second husband actually went further back than that. We were in Liverpool museum one day and I was looking at the time scale mural on the wall. I was bemused to find that there, between Homo Sapien Erectus and the little chap who trundled about on all fours was my then dear husband...Australapithecus....the spit of him. Right down to the hunched walk, over hirsute body, protruding brow with flat head at the back and general miserable demeanour ( which is understandable if you have spent your life staring at your feet) I pointed out the likeness to him but he was not best pleased IP: Logged |

I always wondered if Neanderthals and Homo Sapien breeded with each other that Homo Sapiens have Neanderthal genes. I have noticed Neanderthal features in some people. I also wonder about the other human species like Cro Magnon,Homo Erectus, Australopithecus. Maybe we are descended from those human species too. This is a great discovery.

Yes and isn't it nice to think that the original theory was wrong. That Neanderthals weren't clubbed into extinction by Homo Sapien E but that the two merged together. I secretly always thought that anyway. Which makes me think that maybe I (who have always had a penchant for big stocky hairy men) are actually listening to the call of my DNA!!IP: Logged |

We can be considered hybrids!Even modern human (African) has to be a hybrid of sorts. I can't imagine that a modern human would spring from the ground. Unless aliens had something to do with it. We are all hybrids, a concoction of evoluntionary processes at work. Neanderthals disappeared only 20,000 years ago. I believe they were bred into people of today and their genes were absorbed naturally over time. If we are 96%-99% modern human, then we must all be African. I think I'll claim some land rights in the heart of the Serengeti. IP: Logged |

There are researchers who claim to be finding more evidence that points to us all originating from Africa somewhere back in the misty layers of the enchanting history of time. IP: Logged |

The question is, was this hybridization a help or a hindrance? Maybe we do need to embrace our inner neanderthal as it were. IP: Logged |
