I'm curious if people have been inundated with spam, especially for astrological and psychic readings, lately.

I'm careful about giving any of my email addresses to get quiz results (which infuriates me when I take pages of a quiz only to be told I then I have to give my email to get the results, though I have found that plenty of times it's easy to give a fake--and rude--email addie) or read a news article, because I know damn well they get sold to spammers.

And yet recently, despite my precautions, the spam I've gotten has gone through the roof, and much of it is related to astrology and psychic stuff. It's only happening to the email that's associated with this site (that is registered here and back when I was a mod people could click on it, though this happened well after my stepping down as mod). So naturally I have to wonder if this site has somehow been compromised by spambots stealing email addresses.

Has anyone else careful like me been drowning in spam lately in their email account listed for using this site?

I've just checked the email associated with this account, and I don't see any spam there.

However, SPAMbots do scour LL for e-mail addresses, which is why posting of them is forbidden. It's a little trickier for a bot to get a Mod's e-mail, but it's a good idea for Mods to use a junk e-mail address.

Ok, thanks. I guess it's just a storm I'll have to weather for awhile, though I'm mystified how it got like this when none of my other accounts (even the one connected to that one) is affected.

I remember one time I had this problem and I actually deleted the email account for a few days and then restored it. The spamming had dropped to normal levels (apparently spammers don't like having their spam sent back to them as undeliverable). I might do that again.

Pixie Jane. That's good that you know so much about email accounts. I have no idea of how to do what you just said! LOL

WHEN I get tempted to sign up for an astrologer's (or anyone's) email, I PAUSE. I look for a statement that says that they do not SELL your information.

IF I don't see that, I almost always ditch 'em.

And, I now have begun to delete subscriptions to emails of ones that come with "no valuable (to me) content" anymore.

So. A few days ago, I went to click on one of my youtube desktop shortcuts to an astrologer I've watched for years .

Instead of the astrologer's channel, I found it HIJACKED by MAGA PRO-TRUMP people.

MAGA PRO-TRUMP-supporters HACKED my computer
They took-over one of my desktop youtube shortcuts.

Had to delete that shortcut-- and don't know how to replace it. I don't know if we can create these anymore after all Dell computers were forced to accept new internet software.

That sounds like a good plan. Spammers hate returned spam.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Mirage. I've had trouble with YT before, but not that specific kind. But I've heard of it being a problem for others.

I don't know how well you can handle computer control, but this brief vid might give you some inspiration:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGgJwcC4P30

I can't say as I don't know your browser or how it was hijacked (I hear Java vulnerabilities are usually involved but turning off Java can create many other problems). I'm afraid until it cuts into the profits of YT (and others) that it's not a bug they consider important to fix.

Since this isn't the political forum I won't say more than that, other than there seems to be a conspiracy to get FOX News everywhere funded by very wealthy corporations and they might exert influence over (or even be within) Google, which in turn controls YouTube. AT&T might be involved as well. I don't know for sure, just that some Wall Street businesses were forcing like hospitals to actually promote FOX News over the wishes of doctors and medical staff (in fact, that took precedent over hiring medical staff and doctors, in the specific example I'm thinking of), and your problem might be an extension of that. That is, it might be a problem that isn't going to be fixed at all assuming Wall Street businesses are promoting this kind of activity as well, but there will still be tricks to take back control of your computer. It's unfortunate that we get put into that position.

There was one time I was a transhumanist neophile. Sometimes I wonder if I live long enough if I'll become a downright Luddite, especially toward tech companies. Though media and tech companies would be great, if they had the right values, or at least more respect for their customers than they do (though don't forget they often treat their employees like crap as well).

Thanks so much for your always-interesting comment, PJ!
.. Love your energy!

Thanks for the URL.
I don't use Google Chrome (yet), but maybe I'll find the way to apply those kinds of settings.

I had done some fishing around the day after I saw the hijack, using some of the Function-numbers that reveal materials. I wasn't sure what I was looking at.

What I did see was that this 'change' of my youtube-shortcut occurred on Jan 15. I deleted it now.

Haven't checked ALL the shortcuts yet,
but the ones I use most seem to be working fine.

Again, thanks for the research and feedback.

(I was SOOO lividly torqued off that they got away with doing that. ..)

I have Java turned off and have no issues with doing so. I use it for school, but I give one-time permission as needed.

I just had that Windows warning thing pop up from a trusted site. It says all files will be deleted. It would have been scary if I didn't know better. Just close your browser.

Exactly!!!! I had it happen again this morning while I used Google for my search engine. Had NOTHING to do with my email this time.

Well... The ~noyve of them!! ..

When I clicked tab OFF, nothing else happened.
Last time, I had shut down EVERYTHING, to reboot. Then, I gingerly picked my way around 'what' I chose to open on the internet.

Would be nice to know 'who' is behind all that.

It's a cleverly disguised pop-up ad.

That happens to me, usually when I'm trying to watch a show on a site like 123movies. I can usually just click out, or back-space. If you can't, disconnect the internet. I did that twice, in the past, but haven't had to do it for a long time.

A little while ago, I was at Starbucks, and they refused access to this site, on the WiFi. I took a screenshot. They said it wasn’t secure. Over a month ago, it was blocked at a Home Depot.

Yeah, my roommate watches things that come through his facebook on his robot-phone. Sometimes the video keeps running. He can't click it off. (He has a rather-nasty temper!!! ..) He had tried all kinds of things. Would go back to his phone, and it was STILL running.

Since we have wifi, I had suggested turning that off, then on... (he refuses to listen).

It's a cleverly disguised pop-up ad.

In a different LL thread, I described trying to open an email from a UK astrologer. They send me daily horoscopes, and articles on sky aspects.

When I'd open that particular email then click onto their website for further materials, I had been getting those loud and very-alarming sirens with a countdown clock and warnings that my computer was being harmed, and that IF I didn't click something right away, many files would be deleted from hard drive.

It "looked" like it was from MS Windows, and McAffee (which we already had installed a long time ago).

Well.... The problem seems to have stopped with that UK website (yay!). This morning I was able to access them.

We now have some kind of 'new' icon that appeared on desktop for McAffee Live.

I have NO IDEA where that came in from!

I had been having very very frustrating problems with yahoo where I was avoiding them as much as possible. My emails were wonky. I was ready to switch emails to a different company.

Am glad that things 'seem' to have calmed down this morning on the internet service.

You know, I' -----

WHOAH!!!
The POST I just published happened "on it's own". I didn't hit 'Submit now' … it submitted the post ALL BY ITSELF???

I don't like that!!

Our firewall makes it secure. That https is only for scrambling credit card numbers.
