That's disturbing and the article is worth reading. Watching even the MSM headlines, I have to wonder how truly peaceful this man and his supporters actually are. Drop the pacifistic pretenses, at least.

The meeting has been deferred, not cancelled. And as the spokesperson for the
Human Rights Watch, said: "Presidents always meets the Dalai Lama and what happens? Absolutely nothing"

So whilst I don't agree that he has deferred it, is there any point to it whatever? I doubt it.

at a rate of - what was it? $2 billion a day? - the bush administration borrowed from china to finance the war in iraq. how many trillions is that over the course of 8 years?

do they not OWN america yet?

and what happened to obama being a puppet?

can't have it all ways, folks. i think it might be time to invest a little faith in the scenario, that it is working towards a GOOD conclusion...

Contrary to popular belief, Obama isn't a pacifist. Since he's been elected, he's reneged on his promise to withdraw troops (though he HAS decided to change the name to "trainers & advisers" so it APPEARS as if there's a troop withdrawal). The closest thing he's done to change things is promise to close down interrogation centers of suspected terrorists, and even that looks to be a will of the wisps, and also leaves open the standard practice of turning them over to OTHER governments to torture instead (who are said to be far worse than the US in their acts of torture). Meanwhile, troops have surged in Afghanistan and bombing campaigns have entered into Pakistan, whether or not Pakistan approves. Obama didn't hesitate against the Somalis either. Also, Obama is making a noise over Iran very similar to Bush over Iraq.

Plus, Obama chose William J. Lynn III for United States Deputy Secretary of Defense (ie, now running the Pentagon). Given that this man was, until confirmed, a lobbyist for Raytheon, one of THE biggest names in the military industrial complex, his choice (and the confirmation by Democrats) doesn't mesh well with Obama's promise to put the strictest limits on lobbyists than under any previous administration, nor his stated values of diplomacy over using the big stick.

Choosing Hillary, a major war hawk who has long wanted to strike Iran and urged her husband to declare war against the Taliban (over how women were treated) in the 90s doesn't make him look like a pacifist (though granted there are other likely reasons for Obama to add her to his cabinet, both noble and scheming).

Finally, ignore his speeches and look how he votes. His voting record (when not abstaining as he often does) overwhelmingly shows him to be a man who votes the opposite of what he claims to stand for, including when it comes to war. His disagreement with the war effort in Iraq (and only Iraq) was very brief, and been mostly supportive since then, that brief moment vastly overplayed by fans and foes alike.

'Course the lovers and the haters can't see this. The lovers can't because they thought he represented "Change" (like every other politician seeking to take an office from the one currently holding it, including Bush in 2000 who promised Change). The haters can't because they blast him for not being like Bush, when in fact he's very much like Bush (just sticks his foot in his mouth less often and can lie better).

But then I notice Obama says a whole bunch of nothing (more like, "yes, that's a big problem, and we will deal with it with [buzz words]"), and people just hear what they want to hear, so he's either the great savior or the antichrist, depending on how they already view him as they see clear intent in his murky buzz words (kinda like seeing a picture in an ink blot test).

well apparently at the moment he is balking on the go ahead for more troops in afghan. which the generals are not too pleased with. but the democrats seem to have a rep for pacifism which has NO basis in reality.

i remember a story about lincoln, another greenhorn in military terms, who let the generals call the shots while he watched and learned...and one day he took the opportunity to remind them HE was commander-in-chief and THEY answered to him, not the other way around.

i'm not sticking up for obama but i am looking for the positive not the negative in all this rats' nest.

people seem to think that the fact that he could see his grandparents' basically unconscious racism is "hating". he strikes me as someone capable of great honesty that most folk would consider negativity.

and a master at "shining it on" with awkward questions, yes. good or bad? too early to tell for me.

"people seem to think that the fact that he could see his grandparents' basically unconscious racism is "hating"."

yeah...sh-t like that got on my friggen nerves.

I have been in his shoes!

I have noticed racist tendencies in my late maternal grandfather.

A matter of fact, in an argument with my stepgrandmother, he called her the n-word

I kid you not. I was so uncomfortable for the rest of that day. they took me to Marine World Africa USA on that day. I felt uncomfortable.

later on, I asked my mom is grandpa was racist and told him what he said, she said "No"

after my grandfather's death, my maternal aunt Dominga said straight up that he was racist and that he wasn't perfect.

It really bothered me about how Obama was judged because of what he said about his grandmother. I was in his shoes, and I had the same experiences with my maternal grandfather.

also..there was some racism against white people on my mom's stepgrandmother's side of the family too.

I think Obama is in a "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" situation.
This was a man who was believed to be muslim by many Americans, and some even said that they would refuse to vote for him because of that. also the flack about how he didn't put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance when it was actually the Star Spangled banner. Giving him crap about not wearing a flag pin, but some of the other candidates weren't wearing flagpins. His patriotism was constantly questioned. He did his damnedest to be cool and not give the impression of an angry black man. There was writer who wrote a book, accusing of Obama of having a deep black rage inside him. Michelle Obama was constantly depicted in the media as an angry black woman. One black writer was trying to make a point that Michelle Obama was more feared than Barack because she's a black woman with slave roots unlike Barack.

There was also passages from his book, DREAMS OF MY FATHER' distorted to make it look like he was a muslim, one the sides of the muslims, and hating white people. That crap really angered me. I have the book, and it's not how people were pasting to make it look like he was a terrorist loving, white hating black man. He wrote a book from his experiences about his life and learning to accept himself as a black man after experience so much confusion about who he was. He doesn't have any hatred of his white side of all like he was accused in that ridiculous book. He grew up loving both his mother and his grandmother.

this was the man that was accused of being friends with and supporting terrorists. with some people in crowd saying "Kill him"

I read some insane stuff on message boards that scared the crap out of me and just made me very angry.

he had to disown his pastor to please white people. The pastor talked about history of race relations including quoting somebody's speech, and was very similar to Dr. King Jr. in his last years when he spoke against the Vietnam War and slammed the US govt, and they don't even consider that Wright served his country in the navy and marines, but they are so damned quick to label his butt Anti-Ameircan. Yes...I am saying straight up...to please white people. scared white people like my exgirlfriend who told me that Obama can't run the country because he's too biased like he is going to give everything to black people. That's so damned ridiculous! Man...my friggen ex sound like some right wing Republican instead of a liberal Democrat which she actually is. She is also the same person that told me "Black men got the vote before women did" but didn't stop to consider that a lot more white women have been governors, congresspeople compared to blacks. Not to mention, the two most important people in Obama's life were white - his mother and grandmother. Obama was one of only 4 US senators that had Black ancestry.

IMHO..He wouldn't be president if wasn't a lot more black, darker with slave roots and not kissing white people's butts.

I think that Obama is trying to please both sides, even though it ends up offending both sides.

With the whole issue with Afghanistan and Iraq, he could be viewed as weak or on the muslim sides, with suspicions of being the anti-christ by the conservatives or be viewed as a warmonger and just like Bush by the liberals.

of course, he can't even be a charismatic man expressing his desire for unity, idealism and inspiration without being accused of being some type of Hitler or practicing voodoo.

he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Obama Meets Dalai Lama Despite China's Objection

Pete Souza/The White House President Obama meets with the Dalai Lama at the White House on Saturday.
text size A A A July 16, 2011 President Obama met privately with the Dalai Lama at the White House on Saturday, despite a call from China to avoid interfering in its internal affairs.

The White House said the 44-minute private meeting underscores the president's strong support for preserving Tibet's culture and protecting human rights. The president reiterated U.S. policy that Tibet is a part of China, but encouraged direct talks between China and Tibetans.

The Tibetan spiritual leader described the meeting as "very good" and said it showed Obama's genuine concern about what is happening in Tibet.

The Dalai Lama has been in Washington, D.C., for an 11-day Buddhist ritual. Thousands of expatriate Tibetans joined a 76th birthday celebration Wednesday for the Dalai Lama, who's just relinquished leadership of Tibet's government-in-exile.

A Chinese crackdown led the Dalai Lama to flee into exile in India in 1959. China says he's welcome to return if he drops his separatist activities, accepts Tibet as an inalienable part of China and recognizes Taiwan as a province of China.

Hong Lei, a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry, had urged Obama to cancel the meeting to avoid damaging Sino-U.S. relations. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, he said the Tibetan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and China was firmly opposed to the meeting. Hong said China had lodged diplomatic complaints in Beijing and Washington over the issue.

Obama last met the Dalai Lama, a fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in February 2010.

katatonic,
It's nice to see you! Global Unity hasn't
changed much in my absence, lol

Juni,
You are the perfect moderator for this forum!

The reason I bumped this string...

I was strolling through memory lane, I've
had such good times here...
and, last week I had a dream about the
book...The Secret of Shambhala(the 11th insight), or something like that...James Redfield, the celestine prophecy books....
so, I clicked on it because of the Dalai Lama...and my dream was about him...
it's horrible in Tibet, Now!
The Chinese government should be ashamed of themselves. ...
