"The Next Hundred Years" by George Friedman. quote: George Friedman is an internationally recognised expert in security and intelligence issues. He is founder and CEO of STRATFOR, which analyses and forecasts trends in world affairs. He is also author of "The Future of War" and "America's Secret War"
This book is a great insight into the States. The slow development of power of the States after WW2, from its growth of dominance in the Oceans of the World, to its reaction to international conflict, George has written a simple reflection of historical world political power and the adolescent beginnings of a country that is yet to reach its strength of maturity. Here's an excerpt: quote: The fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, 499 years after Columbus' expedition, ended an entire age in history. For the first time in half a millenium, power no longer resided in Europe, nor was Europe the focal point of international competition. After 1991, the sole global power in the world was the United States, which had become the center of the international system.

Here's another excerpt: quote: A country's grand strategy is so deeply embedded in that nation's DNA, and it appears so natural and obvious, that politicians and generals are not always aware of it...................Grand strategy is not always about war. It is about all of the processes that constitute national power. But in the case of the United States, perhaps more than any other countries, grand strategy is about war, and the interaction between war and economic life. The United States is, historically, a warlike country.

Excerpt 3: quote: .....the United States has no overriding interest in peace in Eurasia. The United States also has no interest in winning a war outright. As with Vietnam or Korea, the purpose of these conflicts is simply to block a power or destabilize the region, not to impose power.

George Friedman's predictions for this century......*** The US-Jihadist war will conclude - replaced by a second full-blown cold war with Russia. *** China will undergo a major extended internal crisis, and Mexico will emerge as an important world power. *** A new global war will unfold toward the middle of the century between the United States and an unexpected coalition from Eastern Europe, Eurasia and the Far East; but armies will be much smaller and wars will be less deadly. *** Technologies will focus on space - both for major military uses and for a dramatic new energy resource that will have radical environmental implications. I guess the unexpected coalition in Europe won't be that unexpected now!
I'm only one-fifth of the way through this book and am really enjoying it. IP: Logged |

I have finally finished reading "The Next 100 Years" (Yeah, I know, slow reader....too many distractions). What a fantastic read about the geopolitics of the USA. I recommend it to any and everyone, especially those living on American soil. What I have found interesting, is the increase of the Mexican cultural population and how that will effect politics and Washington in the next 60-70 years. The Mexican population living in the legal USA territory will actually be living on their original ethnic territory, thus creating a powerful tie to the land. This will give the Mexican community awesome political power that cannot be ignored or violated in any way. Learning to speak Spanish will be a very useful skill for American children and their children. IP: Logged |
